Deegan For Dad Of The Year

Edited Date/Time 3/21/2019 3:54pm

Now obviously this family is blessed beyond belief when it comes to fun toys to play with, but for Huckson I'm sure this is still an amazing feeling. I was lucky enough to have a dad who surprised me with a new dirt bike not once but twice, and I can tell you that there is nothing like it. The first time he hid it on the trailer and I didn't know I had a new bike until I unloaded it in the desert, not knowing it was even mine!

Anyone else have some cool childhood stories about getting a new/first bike?

I'm not a father (as far as I know), but I can imagine this is just as special for Brian to give as it is for Hudson to receive.

For my 13th Bday I got picked up at school with a new bike in the back of pop's truck. To this day my buddy that was standing next to me after school and still rides with me today wont stop talking about it. Good times for sure, no better feeling.

I was 7ish and my dad took me into the garage and there was a brand new xr70. Was pretty sweet. Couple years later he did the same with an xr100. Nothing cooler than getting new bikes.

Things like that will stick with you forever. I miss my Dad everyday.

My dad brought home a bike (used) that he said he was working on for someone. He tinkered with it for awhile and when it was fixed he said "Here ya go!".

My dad surprised me with a green and purple 1997 KX60 back in the day. It was winter in Pennsylvania, but you best bet I was out there ripping around the yard in the snow.

Such an amazing feeling. My father worked his body into the ground as a self-employed mason, spending his money on a bike for me and to take us racing.

He loved watching me go from a JR50 to a KX60 as the KX had a clutch and the JR didn't. Ha, that was probably funny for him watching me get used to the clutch.

This might be the best thread I've seen in here in a long, long, loooong time!

Brian is amazing with his kids at the track. He seems to do nothing but smile and enjoy watching them have a great time.

I got to surprise my little girl with this back in September. She'd been riding a ttr50 up until then. She got her clutch work down the first day. I got more joy from this than if I had bought myself a new bike.

Back in the day I was greeted with a shiny new 1981 yz 80 under the Christmas tree (behind it). I knew the next year was going to be awesome seeing that sitting there and it was.

For my 16th birthday, my Dad took me over to Don Stephenson's house to "pick up some tires". Prior to going, he told me to throw my gearbag into the van, for whatever reason, I forgot how he spun it. When we got there, at the rear of the garage sat Denny's 1996 Great Western Kawasaki KX 125 outdoor race bike that he had raced once at the season opener in Glen Helen before he decided enough was enough. After Denny and I became friends years later, he described the exact moment when he knew he was done. He said in practice, Mike Metzger had passed him, fell, then proceeded to pass him again a few laps later and it was at that moment the ghost of the badass outdoor mx racer inside of him left his body. Anyhow, Dad asked me what I thought of it and after spewing out some googly eye'd gibberish, he told me to go over there and sit on it right before saying, "happy birthday, son". The best part of the story is Dad had gotten Don to agree to come out to the track that day to set up the suspension for me. Well, I forgot to put my gearbag in the van, but luckily found a helmet that was in the van. So there's my dad, standing with Don Stephenson holding a screwdriver, at a bone dry, whooped out, CLOSED track, while I proceed to grab gears down the start straight aboard a fire breathing Pro Circuit KX 125 with Enzo suspension set up for a 170lb pro, wearing nothing but a helmet, jeans and a tshirt. I rounded the first turn and start coming down the first straightaway where they were standing, grabbing gears and amazed at how throaty this thing was, only to get severe headshake halfway down the straightaway and crash the rest of the straightaway into the next corner.
Best birthday ever! And I wish I still had that bike!!

I’m extremely thankful for the hard work my parents did to get my brother and I racing every weekend for almost 10 years. When they bought a new bike for me, they would put it in my room. Even a 250f. Talk about a surprise after school!

I remember a normal nice spring day and my dad tricked my brother and I into getting something out of the trailer and I opened a trailer in our driveway to see 3 brand new 2008 Kawasaki's for us.

Made it to Loretta's that year too!

Thanks again paps. On top of all the other bikes you brought home this one was pretty memorable.

Got surprised with two bikes as a kid. First one was a PW80 when I was about 8, got it Christmas morning and had an hour clocked on it before 8am. Few years later I was pumping for a Yz85, finally I spotted one in the local buy/sell magazine. After torturing my father to give the guy a call and do a deal, he gave in, but, it turned out the bike was sold! I was devastated. 2 days later I walk into my garage to find the exact bike sitting there! Happiest day of my life. Still got the buy/sell magazine it was bought from. My parents surprised my brother and sister with bikes too and I couldn’t thank them enough for it. So many memories and good times had in those few years.

All the neighbors rode and raced so I was constantly bugging my dad to get me a bike. Around Christmas I noticed a big pile of boxes in the corner of the basement, never thought to look behind it.

X-mas morning I opened up a few other presents and was told that was it. Little while later my dad says to go grab something from the basement. Brand new XR100 with a matching set of gear. Think that was 2002. Awesome.

I raced those on a kx65. I won a runt bike for getting 3rd one season. Some of my best childhood memories.

Yes, I usually watch his videos and he does it very well.
Surely there are more parents like him, but like this we see them in the videos, because that is why we know him more.

My first bike was a YZ85, that was pretty cool when we got to go pick that up. But for some reason, the most special bike purchase my dad made for me was my first big bike, a brand new 2006 RM 125. He didn't come home with it unexpectedly or anything, but on a cold, misty Saturday in March told me, today is the day! I've never been so excited to get a bike before. For some reason, the exact smell of the thing when I started it up in the rain is still ingrained in my mind and the smell of a two stroke on a rainy day at the track instantly takes me back! I broke it in for 3 hours that day in rain and tore the yard to hell. Dad wasn't too thrilled about that.

In 1968 I was 6 years old, my dad raced flat track so I was around motorcycles my whole life but there wasn't a whole lot available for kids in the under 6 year old range so I had been told for years that I had to grow. I had to be content with sitting on the tank with him. One Friday night my dad came home from work, I was in the house and when he walked in he told me he left something in the truck and would I go get it. When I walked out the front door sat a Blue Honda Z50A in his truck. That night we went to KMart to pick out a new helmet(got white, my mom wouldn't let me get the Easy Rider model) which was odd because I had ridden with him for years, not sure what I wore then. The following morning I rode on my own for the first time. Here's a picture from that day. Yeah I wore Harley shirts.

I can remember getting son kx65 in 2000, he was over the moon. Forward 5 years and son & daughter got yz85’s. Both were hyper when we went to pick them up.

2 years ago it was grandson turn to get kx65 and he could not sleep the night before his 1st shot at track.

All great memories.

My Dad didn’t know anything about motorbikes, but I wanted one bad.
I was sick and in sick kids in TO for awhile, he was very relieved when I started feeling better.

Bought me a 1972 new Yamaha Miini Enduro, clutch and everything!
I’m from hockey country, but I loved motorbikes too.

We moved to the boonies when I was 15, bought me a new 1975 Kawasaki 250 Enduro.
I worked hard for him (small time contractor), he ponies up.
A friend also left the death machine,TM400 Cyclone at my place because he lived in town, yehah.

Then bad luck happens, brother in law crashes hiss BSA and is in a coma for six months and is busted all to hell but lived, and my brother, being scouted by some NHL team breaks his femur crashing his 500 Kawi triple..

Then my Dad hated bikes! Let me use the car if I sold mine, he passes away and I was really down in the dumps. Lots of drug and alcohol abuse.
My Mom didn’t have a lot of money but in grade 12 she bought me a new 1978 Honda 750. I was f’ing Fonz ?Sold it second year of college, day I graduated I bought myself a new 750 Seca at 22% interest. (that’s what the rates were back then, even on mortgages).

Sold it a few years later for the first watercooled Yamaha125 and cash. Little track you could ride to,man what fun. No cops on a track.

How I survived the street bike days in my young years is a freaking miracle.

If you do buy your kid a bike, get a chest protector as mandatory equipment please.
59, have a Katoom 525 (fun bike with worlds worse forks.

First bikes usually start a life long love affair of freedom.

Thanks Dad and Mom, miss ya both.

There are a few times I was lucky enough to get “new” bikes. First one was a pw50, pops asked me who my favorite rider was and at the time it was Mike Lorroco and he was number 5. For my bday I received that bike! I then received a kx65 when I was 8. Dad took me up north in Wisconsin once to visit my grandpa and on the way we picked up this kx85 with #328 on it, that number stuck with me and is my pro number now but I remember I was afraid of it at first because it was so loud! Lol funny how things work, in 2013 we were getting ready for the local races and my 2010 kx250f clutch was starting to go. We couldn’t find a clutch so while I was taking the old clutch out and thinking I wasn’t racing that weekend, mom and dad came home with a new 2013 kx250f. The last one was in 2017, it was my first full year racing the Pro nationals In Canada in mx2. First moto at Riverglade, I started last and made some passes to 29th and my bike started to get slower. Well it blew up, my dad was texting me asking if I had crashed and I had said it blew up. Well, he says hold tight. Well 2 days later we’re at Deschambault for the National and pops says “enter the Mx1 class because I’m delivering you a new 2018 Kx450f. My dad drove all through the night just to give me a bike, watched me race and it was my best finish of the year In the mud. My parents didn’t come from money, they had me when they were teenagers but they taught me how to grind and give everything 110%. Super grateful for my parents and The memories will last a life time.

Just watched the video last night, and I have to agree. He has the means to spoil the hell out of those kids, but it doesn't really look (from the outside anyway) like he does.

After watching Hudson take off a couple of times, you could almost see Deegan mentally tallying up how much he's going to have to spend on clutches for that little bike.

I use to think Deegan was a huge doucher, but now I think the complete opposite. He puts a ton of work into his kids and they seem like pretty good kids with cool personalities.
