Ever had burns and scabbing and it breaking open? It his ass is burnt, it could be painful.
I've seen someone's feet swell so much from lime burns that they couldn't walk ,let alone get their boots on for a whole month.
It will be a shame if some riders are unable to race/ride for a while

Ever have your eyes get chemical burns so bad that when you try to drive yourself to the hospital, oncoming cars look like UFO's? Ever had your eyes chemically burned so bad, you get permanent eye damage that required surgery or some form of corrective vision treatment? I've had both, it sucks. Ever inhaled chemical vapors to the point that you had to go to the ER for treatment? Yep, I've done that too. Chemical burns are the least of the issues and while they suck, they are tolerable. I've had more caustic burns than I can count. The other effects aren't tolerable. For the most part, I don't recall ever missing work over chemical burns yet granted mine were manageable. I've seen other people miss months of work due to burns. All depends on severity of the burn.

The danger with the burns and open wounds for the riders really comes to the risk of possible infection. MRSA is a real possibility. I wouldn't blame a rider for sitting this weekend out depending on the severity of their injuries, especially if they aren't legitimate title contenders. I wouldn't call them a pussy either.

The doctor I spoke with said Lime burns don’t heal as fast as a regular wound and are high risk for infection. It sucks!

Nobody who lines up for a Supercross is a “pussy”! Have you looked at one of those whoop sections knowing you have to go wide open or it’s likely a hospital trip? These guys are some of the most savage human beings on earth. You can say a lot of things, but “pussy” doesn’t apply to anyone racing Supercross.

Lol 5k... thats not a start, that's parked at the truck with out your gear even on.

Let's do the math. 80 riders x $5k = $400k (not including 50 kids at the moment)

It is a large under statement saying that would be getting off easy for the massive screw up. Although not intentional on their part (at best ignorance and stupidity), some one has got to pay the damages.

The elites of Feld can't be that actual clueless on the money that goes into these bikes and/or the potential health hazards they exposed the riders to can they?

$5k is a slap in the face and a pathetic attempt to keep this out of court. They made it worse for themselves if this is true imo. Cough up a couple million in damages and start paying the riders what they are worth.
I’d bet that 5k comes with a release of liability.

Add: lime/lime slurry/caustic doesn’t discriminate between factory, privateer or UpTite...

If someone can’t race b/c of burns doesn’t make them anything other than “injured” and they don’t care what you call them from your “safe zone”

We’ll have to agree to disagree on this one UpTite. I am not a doctor nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn last night BUT in 1990 I got splashed with Caustic and had severe burns on my face. Had that been on my ass (insert joke) there was no way that was going to rub on a seat for 20 plus 2

Serious question, what industry do you work in where you keep getting chemical exposure but not get supplied with proper safety equipment to stop it happening?

What is really scary, pH is on a log scale between 0 and 14 with neutral at pH7. If his eye pH doubled, thsts really bad... caustic eye injuries are bad because soaps form and the alkali is hard to wash out the eye.

Likewise, caustic forms strong detergents and will strip a lot of the oil from the bike as well as etch the aluminum.

I saw a safety video once and some poor guy had his feet amputated after caustic filled his rubber boots. Sad

Hope no permanent health damage.

If his pH was really at 14 then that would mean the actual level was 10^7 times more basic then normal correct? I'm wondering if maybe he meant the actual level rather than the logarithmic pH scale, because that seems like it would be impossible without massive issues with your vision. This is way outside my scope obviously so I'm just inferring here, but even if it was twice as basic as it normally is that's no Bueno. Really hope he doesn't have any lasting effects, I'm not very familiar with this stuff but I know it can't be good.

A quick google search says eye pH between 7.0 and 7.3, slightly more acidic than physiological pH 7.4

No way his eyes are pH 14, but even a couple of decimals more than 7.3 says not good.
Since pH is on a logarithmic scale, an increase by 1 pH unit would be a 10-fold change for H+ and OH- activity. If his normal pH of the eye is roughly 7.3 ([H+]: ~5e-8 M,[OH-]: ~2e-7 M) then wouldn't double the pH (due to contact with Lime) be a pH of 7.6 ([H+] : ~2.8e-8 M, [OH-] : ~4e-7 M).

Going from a pH of 7 to 14 is a 10,000,000-fold change rather than a 2-fold change.

A change in eye pH from 7.3 to 7.6 is still pretty serious especially considering this was several days after the initial exposure.

whatever double the pH means really is irrelevant, of some has sufficient exposure that their eye pH moved, its a really big deal.

This is why I think they'll drop points this weekend in 450's. Eli has gotten a huge advantage on top of taking the red plate. Did he take an antidote? Does everyone think Honda is going to sit by and let this season get away from Kenny if he, along with Brayton, Friese and Seely still can't race this weekend? Even if they are able to hit the track
Yeah I'm pretty sure that's not going to happen. I may be wrong but if they were going to do that they should have let everyone know a couple days ago. It's bullshit for a guy like Roczen and his team to travel cross country only to find out that the race isn't going to count towards their ultimate goal.

Industrial Water and chemical processing applications that span from power plants to oil and gas. We have the proper safety equipment and I've been through safety training over a dozen times. On the caustic burns, that's laziness on my part for not putting on a full apron or long gloves (that go past the elbow). Truth be told, I'm so used to it now I just get lazy on wearing the right PPE when it comes to caustic because I know it will heal. Most of the time, I just wash it off as soon as I feel it (it's slick to the touch). That's 100% on me. The eye issue was bad and I learned better from one incident. It came from gas vapors from an unexpected chemical release. I was wearing full PPE with goggles, Tyvek suit, etc, but the goggles had vents to prevent fogging and the gas got inside the goggles via the vents. On that same incident, I was also wearing a full respirator that was properly test fitted. The gas was so strong it consumed the neutralizing material in the respirator cartridge and allowed me to breath some of it in. I got over the inhalation portion of it (although it wasn't fun). SCBA gear is now required in that area. The eye issue was by far the worst issue. That was all related to one safety incident and it sucked. Some of the best lessons are learned from failures. That was a safety failure. No issue like it has happened since then.

mate, please take better care of yourself- i mean it sincerely, no job is worth rushing or cutting corners.

i speak from experience, chemical exposure nearly cost me my life, and nearly cost my wife and kids their husband and dad..... and it took well over 70 hospital visits in the last 3 years.

It makes me cringe when i see people working on cars or bikes all macho and not protecting themselves from oil, solvents and all that. Even youtube videos of people restoring bikes breathing all sorts of crap into their body.

Just because you can buy a chemical from the stores or garden center, exposure can ruin or end your life

If you are interested in what real experts have to say about the possible concerns, health risks, and/or seriousness of this chemical, it's not hard to find: https://medlineplus.gov/ency/article/002910.htm. In short, the people who have experience with stuff, are not actually lying to you.

The stuff is no good, and a tough guy attitude will not make it that much less dangerous.

Thank you. In all honesty, I DO know better. I am now one of the owners of our company and I don't get the same exposure to them as I did as a more inexperienced rep in the field 10-15 years ago. The one issue was a bad one and taught me a difficult lesson. I was fortunate as it could have been much worse. Take care of yourself and glad you are still around!

From the racerhead blog -
"the crisis caused by the actions of a track worker"

Very weak to single someone out like that. Who was supervising this track worker? What kind of qualifications does this track worker have that you allow to dump seemingly whatever he likes on the track? Was the track worker trained in lime use? Did the track worker buy the lime with their own personal cash?

I'm assuming the track worker didn't make the decision on his own. Kinda messed up scapegoating one track worker

Really hope he doesn't have any lasting effects, I'm not very familiar with this stuff but I know it can't be good.

No way his eyes are pH 14, but even a couple of decimals more than 7.3 says not good.
I believe pH is logarithmic, thus saying his pH in his eyes was doubled doesn’t mean it went from 7 to 14. But high school was a long time ago so I could be wrong.

I'm assuming the track worker didn't make the decision on his own. Kinda messed up scapegoating one track worker
My dad always told me “When you assume, you make an ass out of you and me”.

Shit can and often does happen due to the actions of one individual especially in tense, challenging situations. I imagine the TV broadcast schedule required a short amount of time to make a call and it was made; it went wrong. I don’t feel DC singled a guy out to lay blame but instead to empasize with his situation as I’ll bet DC’s been in it many times.

The media had a meeting with Prater and Jendro this afternoon and outlined what happened. From their side, it was a list of things that came together at once for a nightmare scenario.

Although the pH level of the soil on Saturday was thrown off by the lime, it returned to normal by the time the EPA arrived to test it and its a non factor. The EPA will not call for any further action, either.

Feld has suspended use of lime effectively immediately, until they learn more about how to perfect the use (it’s been a staple for years) or find an alternative.

Supercross will continue on, no shutdown by the government or internally to worry about per Prater. Expect all of the media outlets to have a transcription of the meeting or something this week.
