There are many types of lime.

Garden lime aka calcium carbonate - not so bad.

Builders lime aka calcium hydroxide - more corrosive - mixed with water will burn flesh.

Makes them look like a bunch of amateurs. Taking the coatings off of bikes, clearly they used it in useless conditions, and sounds like way too much of it.

They have been putting lime in the tracks for years. It’s one of the only ways to have a track that was built just days in advance harden up enough that faces and landings do not fall apart instantly. I’m betting they didn’t use to much more than they have in the past but because of all the rain and how deep the track got we are seeing the effects a lot worse.

Is this where the Vital tuff guys call the racers pusses and tell them to "man up"? And tell the mechanics the same thing?

Or is this where those industry "insiders" come in and tell us that the racers should have just packed up and gone home if they didn't feel it was safe to race?

Whole lot of stupid in this sport and it isn't the home schooled riders.

Everyone should submit a bill to Dirt Wurx and Feld for the ruined bikes and refuse to race until it's paid.

Will be extremely difficult for all those who toe the business line to just bury these injuries and destruction from the media narrative.

Wouldn't it happen at almost every mud race than, like Seattle last year?

I heard quite a few suspension guys in Japan were not very happy about lime being used. And big bills coming.

CA Hydroxide isn't terrible, but quick lime (CA oxide) is pretty damn bad. I could see someone making the mistake of thinking that lime is lime and putting down quicklime by mistake or not knowing the difference.

Some of it could definitely be chemical burn, some of it could also very well be chafing from the mud being between your clothing and your skin. Worked in enough water-filled mud holes in my life to have suffered from that malady more than a few times and it looked a lot like the picture posted above.

It’s not the first SX mudder in history though - I think that crazy amount of corrosion on those hubs and alleged burns points to something different - and if it wasn’t the lime then what? Using a hardening agent on the jump faces makes sense - but it still leaves more than a few wondering WTF happened.

Considering the amount of etching of all the aluminium parts, they definitely over did it with the lime

Lime is used to help speed the drying process when building the track. Unfortunately when it was rutted and the dirt came apart with all the rain the lime did too. When it quit raining it became bad because there was nothing to dilute it back down. It will be interesting to see what happens.

i have been in the nice mud holes too, but it points to lime burns and lime corrosion.
But when the boss man asks is that a chemical burn ( week off paid) or chafing what do you say?

Hmm, just think if we had some investigative journalist in this sport. Can you imagine Tom Brady being burned in the Super Bowl and no one looking into it? I'm sure we'll see something this week and then probably Ralph and RC will report on it in the science of SX segment...

I didn't realize dirt bikes experienced chaffing.
