Working for a company that has been bought and sold a few times (by private equity/ to public/ back to private) the process can take months....there are many moving pieces to an acquisition.
It is very encouraging to hear there is interest..

"Although Alta has ceased operations, there is still an opportunity that the company and it's assets will be purchased and resume operations. Unfortunately the chances of that happening are not high. In the short term, a slim team has been assembled to help with the wind down and this team will be able to ship some parts to dealers. If you need parts or think you might need parts for your Redshifts, act quickly! Reach out to your dealers and ask them to order parts for you ASAP. Not all parts are available - batteries for example - but the team will do their best to fill orders from dealers if they can. Thanks for all your support.
Stay Fast."
Not much on the alta that you couldn't buy elsewhere. My biggest concern would be the transmission gears. Doubt those are off the shelf, and gears are expensive to make. Only wear part on the motor is the bearings.
Battery should be rebuild able for those brave enough. WP suspension.
Can you heat treat on your lathe???
Stamping?
injection molding?
Especially that mine was delivered to me a couple days before their announcement. I have not even rode mine yet. At least I have a brand new, high-tech, pretty damn bitchen paperweight that I might be able to weld with...
Who the fuck cant heat treat but owns machining tools?
What part HAS to be stamped?
What needs to be injection molded that you cant buy off the shelf? Maybe the back fender set up.
Point being, 1 bad crash isnt gonna turn Altas into a parts bin for others.
From what I was told, Acerbis supplies the plastic to Alta. So there should be a supplier for that.
Pit Row
And the battery case....it's not big or anything so I'm sure you can just start with a billet piece, chuck it up and start hogging it out.
Ooops....your throttle controller just took a dump. It's potted/sealed fly-by-wire and chock full of electronic wizzardry. Throw some billet on the mill....
The battery management module fried. Chuck up some billet.....
Firmware glitch. Ooops.
wiring harnesses...?
shroud busted in a crash....Hmmm.....
circuit cards....???
Busted a tooth on an internal motor gear....you have broaches to cut gears right? Who doesn't? Pop it in the furnace (oh that's right, you need a furnace) and then drop in some oil like those Forged in Fire guys. Rockwell hardness? Come on, who doesn't have a harndess tester????
Like you said....ALL you need is a mill/lathe. That's it. Nothing else. Can make ANY part.....
Seriously, as you know there are few parts that cannot be sourced or repaired, and there is already a network developing at the owners forum to work around no support with some high (higher?) tech solutions. These things are being developed in spite of the company closing the factory, just like in the hot rod days by high tech savvy owners. With a budget like yours you'll be fine. This is not a Cannondale. No one wanted to keep them because they sucked.
The idea that anyone can just do that type of work and maintain a bike that way is absurd, for the average consumer though.
I could see the China industry reverse engineering those things soon.
That was their issue - slow to produce.
Dealer in my area wished he could buy more - just werebt available
Batteries these days all use common cells. Pretty sure you can buy the cells alta uses. When was the last time you saw someone break a case? But yeah, if need be you could machine/cast a new one. Just be ready to drop the cash if you cant do it yourself.
Electronics can be fixed, even potted stuff. Just gotta find the right guy willing to give it a go, and the experience to not fuck it up.
Plastics will be available aftermarket, you can buy plastics for bikes that ain't been sold in 10 years. Alta plastics will be around for a minute.
Like I said, gears are gonna be about the worst. Those ain't off the shelf far as I know, and they ain't cheap to make. Being a wear part, they will have to be replaced at some point. None the less, a machine shop can handle it.
I gotta get to work now, but feel to keep trying to claim Altas are useless now. If you want, I'll buy yours
As they say, it ain't rocket science. It's more like a science project.
