How much longer untill Japanese manufacturers produce 350s If at all? At this point I would be pretty shocked if not one manufacturer had one in development. I'd love to own a blue one!

Maybe Yamaha due to the fact they've got a few 2 strokes still going strong but doubt it. I'd be all for it though.

I'd buy a red, green, or yellow one now if there was one.

All things considered, a 350 would be perfect for me.. But I have to say the maintenance really takes the cake. I've seen first hand alot of A guy's go 100 hours with nothing but oil changes. Can't get much better than that.

I have nothing against KTM and husky. I'd just figured at this point other manufacturers would have something in the pipeline for that market.

Jap 450s are cows right now 350 will not pull that weight as well. How much does the 18 cr250 weigh?

Never.

Somebody interviewed some Japanese engineer at Honda years ago about this subject, and he said something along the lines of it didn't make any financial sense to develop an entirely new motor for something they would only sell a few thousand units of.

Well that's quite disappointing

Ha! Honda beat everyone to the 350 game back in 1969.

They even had twice pipes on it back then too.Tongue

Then Honda did it again in the mid 80’s

And that one was actually a really great bike!

Personally I'm seriously thinking about de-stroking my RMZ450 to approximately 400cc, I just want to make the bike more 'flickable', a reduction in stroke will reduce the spinning inertia of the crank and make the whole bike feel lighter.

The horsepower does not worry me ( I'm happy with my CR500 two-stroke), it's just harder to throw around with that lump of an engine.

Same piston, cam & valves, just need a shorter cam chain, deck the barrel and a new crank.

I've ridden my mates KTM350's, didn't excite me at all; too flat all the way through the rpm range, maybe with all the low-down shifted to the top-end might be nice :-)

In the mid 2000s I always wanted a RPM Ice Cube to build my 250F into a 315. I never jived with 450s, and even at 220lbs I was riding a 250F. Now I have a 350 and without a doubt its a great engine. Your average vet rider is buying new bikes and the 350 is a great Vet bike, but I'm no marketing wiz. I'm sure the Japanese manufacturers are doing the right thing to keep themselves afloat.

They're no heavier than the pre 2016 KTMs and the 350 pulled that just fine.

You find an SL350 in that shape, it is gonna fetch some serious money.
I really like the looks of those old Honda SL's. One of my brothers bought a brand new SL70 back in the early 70's. Neat bike, and Honda would probably sell a bunch of them if they brought them back.

I agree! A 350 would be sweet! you listening Yamaha?
The 450’s are a hand full these days, the 250’s arnt enuff ( 2t excepted)
Tried orange! Just not my flavor!
& forks suck!
I wouldn’t be surprised if one day soon the current 450’s go the way of the 500 2t!
Too much for the average rider

I wish Honda would make one too.

But remember, KTM is a company run by dirt bike enthusiasts, people who really love riding and racing.

Honda and the rest of the Japanese companies are run by conservative accountants.

The weight difference between the 250 and 450 is minimal. Why don't some of you just get a 450 and run it on the soft setting?

I feel like my 17 CRF450 on soft is fairly similar to my friends SXF350 on normal.

My understanding is that the 350 as a powerband more similar to the 250, but with more power. That is what attracts people I think.

You may reconsider some of those thoughts

Destroking while utilizing the same crank webs would hardly reduce inertia

It would decrease piston speed, make the ports and valves become oversized for their use, and require a high revving type engine to produce good power

The ktm 350 is a very short stroke engine

If you reduced bore size - and went the other way - you could still produce good torque at lower rpms more easily - imho.

Of course a reduction of both bore and stroke - would cross the middle and be what you really want.

The sport needs a cc reduction. 350 still produces the same hp needed to go fast - but has enough versatility that different oems could produce different power styles and compete for rider preference

When most of the top 5 at mxdn is 250cc - the proof is already there the 450 isnt needed

What are you hoping the Japanese bring to the table?

KTM and Beta both make a 350, and have since 2011. There are a few smaller 300's in the TM and Sherco that people seem to love, and Beta alone makes a 390 (formerly 400) as another niche choice in the 4t's. There are also some over 450 big bores in the KTM/Husky, Beta, TM and now Sherco also. To each their own Smile

Here's the just released 2019 Beta RR Race Edition 4t which is available in a 350/390/430/480.

As a conservative accountant that owns a KTM 300, I am conflicted by your post.

So was the XR400 that followed later. Dropping the XR line is the dumbest thing Honda ever did IMO.

I had an 84 XL350...bike was a tank but it was awesome. Thought me how to ride a 4 stroke. Honda really killed them selves by not having a full trail line up IMO. XR250/400 was the sweet spot.

Any secrets out there yet for a Japanese brand doing a 350? Haven’t seen the subject touched for a while so before I go buy a KTM or Husky would def like to know that the jap brands aren’t doing one!
