2019 CRF250R or 2019 YZ250F? Help me decide.

Do these issues/recall apply to the 450 as well? I've had my eye on a left over 2017.

Rode my 19 YZ250F for the first time yesterday (coming from a 17 YZF) and wow does the thing ever turn. Our track has deep black dirt ruts and I found that the 19 likes to stay planted in the middle of turns/ruts where the 17 would try to stand up or push wide. Smaller myself (5’6 and 135 on a good day) so the slimmer cockpit feel was great for me, plus the power was right on par. You’ll love it!
So excited to hear. Thanks man!

No, no there won’t! Luckily there’ll be a 125 shootout to replace it.

Yzf . Everyone love to hate the rmz motor but the crf is pretty weak too. Would be a no brainer for me

Yamaha, best engine and suspension and the most reliable. Seems like not a hard choice.

I don't think 250 shootouts will be until late October.

I wonder if Suzuki will be sending bikes over for the media or if they will be doing the shootouts without the Suzukis

I don't ride anymore but I do borrow a bike from a friend every year and do one race. I'm 53 and stopped riding when I was 17 so i'm not a good judge but I will say this and I hope it helps. Last week I jumped on a friends 18 Yamaha 250F and decided to race the Big buck full gas. His bike is a stock bike and I didn't touch it. I didn't even set the sag. From the first time I sat on it that morning I knew it was for me. The motor was impressive and the mid range was really strong,The suspension was also amazing considering its stock and the bike handles great even though I felt it pushed a little. I'm 200 pounds so i'm sure setting the sag would have helped the push it had. I had so much fun on it and enjoyed it so much that I think i'm going to buy one and start riding again. BTW I won 5 out of 6 test on it .

I just noticed something. Yamaha and now pretty much every mfg has the “downdraft” intake where it comes down at a steep angle to closer match the angle of the intake port, so it comes down over the balve and doesnt have to turn. The exhaust ports have not had the same treatment, all mfg’s exhausts have had to still make the turn after going up out the exhaust port, then make a turn turn to a slightly downward facing exhaust port. Yamaha on the 19’ has essentially made an “updraft” exhaust where the exhaust goes up through the exhaust port to an upward facing exhaust. See how it goes up then curves down. This was explained as “new exhaust port geometry” but did not explain that this was what they meant. In the past it had gone down and flat now it comes out up past the valve in a straighter line, being more efficient by not having to turn as much. Pretty cool and they are the only ones doing this/who can because there is no frame in the way.

Anyone who has experience of the 2019 yzf 250 compared to 2019 ktm 250f? Long time ktm owner here but the 19 Yamaha has got me thinking of switching to blue. I own an 2018 ktm 250f right now.

Just bought a 19 yz250F after racing a 17 Husky 350 the past two years. Thought the Husky suspension was good and liked the air forks. YZF suspension is better, feels more compliant, has better and less harsh bottoming, and is “springier”.

Yzf cockpit feels more stretched out but it’s a bit of an illusion. What is not an illusion is the pocket in the seat and how it’s harder to get super far forward on the Yzf, but we’re talking about inches.

Yzf turns well, it does but the Husky turned better and sharper and the front end feels super quick to cut down if you want on the Husky. Yzf is noticeably better over the back end on Choo though. This caught me off guard because everyone says the KTM/Husky rear has great shock.

Also, brakes on Yz250f are almost too strong and need a little more modulations. Husky wins here.

Clutch in Yzf is better than I thought it’d be. For Moto I’m not sure I’ll adjust it much and it really seems to take abuse. Husky clutch is better at the end of the day (build, fade, actuation) but thought the gap would be bigger.

Some of the little things are really nice on the Yzf like how well tucked up the exhaust is. Less damage, less burns, less roost. Also things like wheel bearings, wheel seals, bar mounts and chain are better on Yzf. More well engineering.

Other things though, like quality of bolts aren’t as nice as the KTM/Husky.

Not sure you can go wrong, but man, the WiFi app is really a fantastic add. Maps make a big difference and being able to do maintenance reminders, engine hours and faults, etc on your phone for free is genuinely worth several hundred dollars.

Hope this helps!

Yamaha is a turning beast, even for a short ass like me, I haven't noticed the wideness being an issue and I am short. The only way to go.

So I think I’m gonna pull the trigger on a new bike coming back from my deployment this week but can’t decide between the Honda or the Yamaha. My last bike was a 16 Crf250r and besides the air forks really liked it. Before that I had a 14 and 15 YZ250F and liked both bikes as well besides the front end feel and wide ass shrouds. Im a bit hesitant on the new Honda with the weight and the issues they’ve had but seem to have addressed for 19 (clutch basket, battery and oil starvation up top). From the 19 YZ250F first ride reviews it sounds like they made some solid improvements but it is a first year bike. So vital crew what would you get?
Bump!

I had a 16 YZ250F and really liked the power but wasn't too keen on how it handled in the woods. The front seemed a little skatey with me at 175#s. (No I don't want an X model) and I have rode my buddies 19 CRF250R and I really like the chassis but the bottom is noticeably weaker than my 16 YZ. Thoughts between the two?

Whats up bud. I never got to ride the newest gen Honda, but I did own a 19 YZ250F, as far as features, looks, etc. the bike was amazing, but I didnt jive with it at all and I loved my 14,15,16 YZ250Fs. The power is insane and it does steer alot better / feel slimmer, etc. Just realized Im more of a Honda guy when it comes to handling and how I ride, I couldnt get used to the unpredicatbility of the YZ in the rear. Hope that helps!

I have the 19 YZ and I’ve ridden both Honda and Yamaha 250Fs over the last 15 years and I know what you mean about the front end feel of the Yamaha. That is completely gone. The front end feels very planted and doesn’t push at all now. The motor is fucking awesome too. It makes me not miss riding a 450, because I can easily jump anything on it.

Yeah, it will not rev as far as the CRF, but the chassis and low end is probably great for woods riding.

I went back to a 17 CRF250R, I may jump into a leftover 19 or 20 now that I know they have addressed some of the quality issues from the 18. I think you'll like the 19 YZ, my buddies loved it when I let them ride it, so maybe it was just me lol.

I had a 16 YZ125 as my main bike for a bit and loved it. I agree the 16 crf and yz250fs made their power down low. I liked both when I had them. The 14-15 YZ was just so vague in the front and a bit unpredictable in the rear. The 16 crf was the most easy and comfortable bike to ride but that suspension got rough. I’m a weekend warrior so don’t have a good handle on where I really settle in the powerband. I know I ran the hard smooth map on my 14-15 YZs since the stock was so abrupt off the bottom. The crf unicam defiantely needing some shifting especially out of corners going 2nd to 3rd was hard to nail down at times.
I typically ride a 2015 kx250f. I rode my buddy's 2019 Yz250f the other day and they are still abrupt off the bottom. Very responsive as soon as you crack the throttle. Suspension wasn't set up and was barely broken in but it felt really good and had lots of potential in tuning it to suit me. I'm a short guy (5'5'') and didn't really notice the width of the shrouds at all. The only thing that threw me off was the yz feels like it has more engine braking than I'm used to on my kx. It was throwing off my timing in the corners at first. After riding it a few more minutes I adapted. I haven't rode the 19 CRF but man does it look good. I would love to spin some laps on one. I also rode an 18 kx250f and it was very fast. It didn't have the bottom punch of the YZ but it had decent pull off the bottom that has a seamless transition to a punchy midrange. It felt pretty stiff but I don't think the guy even had it broken in yet.

How are you liking the 17 CRF ?
Is it a lot slower or is that more of an exaggeration?
Did you get it new or used ?
I saw a Brand New 17 CRF for $4999

Don't have it anymore, sold my moto stuff since I need to take a break for school right now, but I did love the bike. I know everyone complains about air forks here but for a C weekend warrior vet rider they were fine, just have to keep checking pressures throughout the day which can be somewhat annoying. Its noticeably slower than the YZ but for me it was much more of a managable/controlble power. The handling characteristics is what sold me on Honda. I had always had YZs and thought there was nothing better until I rode a Honda, hard to explain but just so stable, point and shoot and predictable, although I loved my YZ's they were less predictable and sometimes a handfull. For reference I had a 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2019 YZ250F.

Yeah i think i would prefer the smoother delivery of the honda, i would like a 15 to 17 Crf250 and convert the forks to spring
Either that or a Newer KX250F and Same thing address the forks , both sound like Great bikes that just need forks addressed and seem like a great way to go for someone on a lower budget.

The suspension really isnt that bad, its no KYB SSS stuff but its solid even in stock form, way better than the WP 4CS junk I had on my 16 KTM. Same as you I grabbed mine for $4999, $5200 OTD last November. I LOVE the look and features of the new bikes but still concerned with reliability and they're heavy. Good luck man!
