"Even if MX Sports wants Altas on the line, the homologation rules prevent that from happening. No conspiracy, no OEM dictator pulling the strings, no dislike of e-bikes. Just a simple application of rules that have been in place for many years."

You are wrong. Open classes have no homologation requirement, only Limited classes so that is a smokescreen.

* We have to switch to legal emissions bikes or the sport will die
* KTM develops a DI 2t
* Alta and others make E-bikes
* Now that we have emissions capable bikes, the goal post has been moved.

The list of who hasn't tested and reviewed Alta's in the industry press is much smaller than those that have. Yet we have no data.

Interesting. Oh, well. Guess we'll see Alta next year.

In the meantime, I'm sure DC would sell MX Sports for the right price. Would probably be a relief at this point.

Johnny is correct here: "Open classes have no homologation requirement." I misspoke earlier.

But Alta is wanting to race 250 SX, not Open LL. That's where everyone wants to be careful not to set precedent.

I'm not in the country. Carry on.

Hey DC, honest question. I was unaware that homologation was required for LL's. How was Jerry Robin able to qualify on that 1986 CR if this is the case?

For the record, I fully support not allowing the Alta's in yet. The people complaining are the same ones that want the AMA's head on a spike for the four stroke CC rule.
No, my dislike for the AMA dates back to the 70's when the sport was still growing and they ignored all of the land use issues while blowing smoke up everyone's ass and continuing to collect dues and pretend they were going to help.

Look around at all of the tracks that are no longer open to see why the AMA is as useless as tits on a bull.

Add the "production rule" debacle, the displacement debacle, the Supercross promotion ownership debacle, the Honda RS750 debacle, and pretty much anything the AMA has touched has gone to Hell in a hand basket.

It's a hard sport to love sometimes when you see what it was, what it could have been, and what it has become.

So let me get this straight... all that and we are still back to there being no good reason for not allowing them in an open class? I really just want to understand that part. Isn’t that really what this whole argument is rooted in at this point? The fact that the AMA said it was ok for them to participate in any amateur open class and for some unknown reason MX Sports says no? How can we be expected to think it’s anything other than some bias or outside influence? It’s not about setting a precedent it’s just giving these guys a racing outlet while the powers that be try and find them a permanent home. If there is no homologation requirements, and the AMA is ok with it, that why for the love of god why was it a problem?

DC Sports statement several times of Alta wants homologation in the 250F class is of zero relevance in disallowing it from open classes.

Alta's 250 Class Amateur (informal) request has not been accepted by the AMA. The 450/Open class is what is left for them for now. I don't recall any argument over that, even from Alta. Unknown to most, no formal homologation request has ever been made for either Pro class. That puts the ball in Alta's court for the purpose of Pro racing.

The concern stated for the LL Nationals by the usage of a Supplemental Rule to remove the Alta's even from the open classes in (the highest level) of amateur racing is a lack of information and data and has created this dissent many are expressing.

I wanted to gather some( previously classifiedWink ) information to help speed the process:

They don’t need a separate class. They are (or were) allowed to race in the Open Class that has no restrictions so to speak. But now the OEMs who pay lots of money to MX Sports, Racer X for advertising, Loretta Lynn’s for sponsorship, obviously raised an issue.

Let’s not fault MX Sports, Racer X, Dave’y for looking out for their best interest $$$$

But please don’t treat us like idiots.

Again what would be wrong with a electric bike class? Nobody thinks electric bike buyers are idiots. The sanctioning bodies learned valuable lessons having 450cc 4 strokes compete against bikes 1/2 their displacement. Maybe just maybe they don't want to make the same mistake again. One could only hope.

Adding an e-bike class at Loretta's would force the elimination of another class.

In a perfect world the least attended class at qualifiers and therefore the least popular class would be eliminated, and an e-bike class added. I'd wager a guess one of the female classes would be eliminated to make room.

We shouldn't all go crazy about the bike's eligibility at LL. If interested in the bike, find a way to buy one. If sales spike upwards, eventually there will be enough pressure placed on race promoters to allow them at all levels. If the bike is not allowed, boycott those events and ride for fun. Money talks.

This could be a way to save the sport and preserve it for future generations. We all know that financially we are on an unsustainable path at the amateur level with four-stroke equipment. The noise issue with four-strokes will not go away.

In a perfect world we would have stuck with affordable two-strokes. That said, e-bikes may be the next best thing!

I'm not part from the "Racing Department" at Alta but I do work closely with them, as I am a Regional Sales Manager for the company. I'm also an AMA Charter Promoter and run the largest night series in Texas, the Main Event Series. I have talked to the person at AMA that has written the new rule concerning the E bike eligibility in AMA amateur races for 2018. The rule is....It is legal in an "Open cc" class for AMA amateur competition right now. However, it is up to each AMA promoter to accept this rule for their series or individual race.

Davey is correct when he said that Alta wanted the bike to be legal in the 250 class. However, that was for the 2017 MX model which was the first production Alta. Now that the new 2018 MXR is available, with more horsepower on the dyno, it is positioned as a 350 equivalent. So Alta would be happy for the 2018 MXR to be classified to race against 350's or 450's in any Open cc class.

I totally respect the position MX Sports has taken and I value the long standing relationship I have with Davey and his crew at MX Sports. Two of my kids have raced at Loretta's and one is trying to get there this year. My wife would love to go every year, kids or no kids or husband to cheer for. She loves that place (specially the creek) and loves the event. If not this year, I'm confident that Alta's will be buzzing around the ranch in the very near future.

Concerning Alta's at only local events. You will see them there. One raced at legendary Rio Bravo in Houston last weekend and one will be racing at Freestone this weekend. You will also see them at AMA "Major Events" throughout the year. If my 2018 demo's would have been delivered a couple of days earlier, there would have been one at the James Stewart Spring Championship.

By the way, since I am in sales, let me finish on a sales point. If any of you want to demo an Alta in my territory (South Central U.S), please contact me. I will make sure it happens. I have my demo's out at the tracks frequently in the Houston area (3 Palms, Rio, Freedom), but if you are anywhere in the South Central U.S, and want to test ride one, please contact me. My info is below.

I have set up a great network of dealers in my territory, and if you know of a dealership that you think would represent Alta well, please let me know.

Thanks!

Wow! Admitted mistakes with the 2t-4t combination, and now you can't run what you brung in the OPEN class. This sport is more political than any political thread that has ever been deleted on this crazy site. I am a fan of DC, but the reasoning behind this decision seems really questionable. Not one credible reason for not allowing a dirt bike to race a class that has damn near no limitations. Sketchy...

Yeah they seem to be throwing excuses out there hoping one will stick. Bottom line is, these bikes are a very viable alternative to IC bikes. This train has left the station.

Interesting debate. MX Sports banned them, then justifies it with "well, only 1 was going to show up anyway".

Why would it matter then? Is there a worry that out of no where 100 of them will show up in the age or letter classes?

American innovation and engineering should be promoted in racing in the USA, not stifled because you're worried about setting the wrong precedent.

When you make the rules, you can change them at will. Let them in with the 250's, if they're out of place, simply move them to the 450's. FIM does this with WSBK and it's been successful. If a certain engine size makes too much power (Ducati with the 1298), they simply implemented rules to slow them down.

That's great and all but we're talking about a National Championship. Not some regional series where the rules are conjured up like the logic in this forum.

Bikes aren't allowed to run turbos or superchargers so it's not a true "open" class.

Your example proves the point. Is this guy normally a 50C Class winner on a normal bike or did the bike make his win possible? Did it provide and unfair advantage?

I can't believe you guys are so blinded by your mistrust for AMA and MX Sports that you're willing to throw common sense out the window.

I'm all for putting electric bikes in an open class or even a limited class if it fits, so why not take a year to do the research? Because you guys want to add the bike into the open class?

That's just bad logic. (Sorry, you'll never convince me to the contrary and I don't expect you guys to change your opinion either. Just pointing out the short-comings in your line of thinking.)

But hey, we're in a shoot first...aim second society right.

I haven't read all 8 pages but a "National Championship" in the Open class? Who exactly is leading the Open class National championship? Who won it last year? What? Oh yeah......nobody really cares. Why not throw them in the vet open and see where they stack up? Wouldn't that be the best research/comparison they could do? Or is that going to destroy the honor and prestige of a Vet Open National Championship?

I would be curious to know if ktm has plans to release a bike comparable to the alta next year. If so it will sure be interesting to see if they are handled with the same amount of "caution" or will it be said that Alta paved the way for their platform?

None of the five OEMs wants them in the Open class as there is a good chance they will win. The MXR is awesome, and with equal riders an Alta can win in the Open class.

If they were allowed to line up in SX and the Nationals with equal riders they can win. The guys at Alta must walk around with wheelbarrows, as you have to have huge huevos (plus be a little bit crazy) to start a motorcycle company in the USA. I have no doubt they could make a few mods and have the MXR competitive with anything on the line.

If you have a chance, take Larry's offer to ride a MXR. It will change how you look at things. The bike is that good.

The MX SPORTS EXCUSE so many years ago with respect to cc-cc racing was that the threat of the lead ban was going to be so hard on the OEM's that we should not implement 2T - 4T reasonable rules until the lead thing works it self out. One year latter lead thing worked itself out and DC skirted the issue for another (20) year. I put in money that this will repeat itself in the exact same manner. "Oh let's figure this out next year" BS

I think it's reasonable to understand that the five OEM's pay a lot of money in sponsorship for their status. They've been doing so for years and have "earned" their right to sit at the table. You can't assume DC would go out of his way to bite the hand that feeds him. It's not like Alta is going to show up to the WV office of MXsports with millions of dollars in sponsorships to make up for the loss if any of the big 5 took their ball and went home.

It's easy to pick on Alta, they're a small tech start up who struck gold but don't have a following, a massive profit, or influence in the industry that the big brands have. Tesla and Xero are two other companies who have entered massive markets as the small guy and are doing battle.

American Engineers producing an American built bike is a damn good thing to hang your hat on. As with the 2 strokes, speak with your wallet and the people beating the drums will listen. In this regard, buy an Alta, go race and let it be known you won't support the AMA nor MXsports because they won't support America.

Alta just became punk rock. Americana punk rock and forward. It's been said we are post everything and every song and sound has already been sung but perhaps the new sound is silence.

It's hard to not let something race when the issue is so few want to race.

Here's another theory. Any chance the ban's a litmus test for the industry and its base? Not sure if litmus test is used in the right context, but I liked 41 and it sounded good.. Wink But, purposely put out there as a gauge/measuring stick for E-Bikes, the industry, and the Big 5?

MX Sports' ban on E-bikes seems to have not drawn much negativity at all towards Alta's effort. Seems to be quite the opposite...and from "die hard MX" fans too. Moto guys/gals are a different breed, contrarians at times, if you will. They like choices and not being told what to do. I'll always have a 2-stroke and a 4-stroke, but am I looking forward to trying something new, that works differently (if not better), that I can ride more places, year round? Hell yes.

Thanks!

Thanks Katoomey but you really could have left off everything after money talks as that is the core of this entire issue. I’ll say it once again no OEM wants to get beat on a national stage by an electric motorcycle, LL, Supercross, National, GP, whatever. Follow the money.

Why do they have to compete against ICE bikes at all? How about their own class. Electric should race electric. You can get every PHD creating every formula on this planet but you are not going to be able to make it as fair and even as its currently done by CCs. It’s apples to oranges, even more probably something like apples to bricks. If their product is good enough then there should be plenty sold to make their own classes. If it’s as good as they say the recent massive price drop alone should put many more in the hands of consumers and the tracks will have no problem filling gates with them. Who wouldn’t want a bike that gave them a huge advantage, isn’t this why thousands are spent on aftermarket parts and tuning now? The more I think about it this seems the only way to go. I think all this trying to force them into current classes is so assholes can brag and say see I told you it was better that your old piece of shit.

That being said if tracks want to have a run what you brung race, and fuel burners want to line up against electric bikes, well good luck and more power to you.

Personally I think they are pretty cool and probably a blast to ride but for the life of me I cant see how watching a supercross race on TV where the only sound is Jeff and Ralph’s voice or being there watching live with no sound of an ICE 4T or 2T. I can see it now as Ralph says “there goes Eli picking off another” as the camera pans a silent shot of Eli blasting down the whoops while Jeff struggles to think of something to fill the silence with. Again, I am not knocking the Alta as I think it’s a neat bike that has its place but from the prospective of a fan watching a race I don’t think there would be even half the excitement without the sound or being there live and feeling the vibrations as they fly by. I think more than ever I am happy with my old piece of shit. I love the sound, the smell of my 2 stroke exhaust, and knowing everyone else is not riding the exact same bike as me. I’m sure I’m probably in the minority on this, but it is only my opinion.

If the racing is close and exciting it will still be great to watch.

I mean the fans go nuts in pro cyclocross and mtb etc. Just take the cowbells Smile

Sure, a sweetly tuned 2 stroke is music to my ears.
