I was just looking at a list of US stadiums by capacity and was wondering if Supercross could actually hold an event at some of the bigger one's? Not sure how it would work out with the other sports timing and weather but 100k plus in a stadium would be impressive to see.

I remember a race one time where they said 89-90K attendance. Don't remember where. Rose Bowl maybe? Mid to late 80s I think it was.

I was there for a supercross race in early 2000's and there was an ice storm that week. As we were walking into the place, a massive sheet of ice slid off the roof and almost took out my whole family. Good times... I'll never go back to Detroit as long as I live.

I don't doubt it. The main reason we had such a terrible experience is because of the ice storm. All the hotels were closed bc they didn't have power. The entire upper bowl of the superdome didn't have power so you had to go downstairs to get food and it was freezing in there. We drove the whole way there Saturday morning, watched supercross, (which was excellent) and then drove the whole way home back to Pittsburgh. It was awful. haha.
Oh man, that does sound miserable. Can't say that I blame you for never returning. Your trip was cursed...lol.

It looks like they set the caps, but failed to actually load the charges.

Next time I need to watch a building not imploding I'll just look out of the window.

Watched them build it, rode across the highway while construction was going on, raced in there one cold Sunday night.
Really disappointing how us Americans treat everything like it’s disposable.
The sound in there when they ran the supercharged tractor pulls was incredible.

The silverdome is in Pontiac not Detroit. So how does you not ever going to Detroit have anything to do with your story?

If you look closely there is a shit load of cars in the carpark. Those are reclaimed VW diesel cheaters

Seen on the news that they had a round 2 of explosives. Seems to have done the trick.

Classic race at the Silverdome w/Huffman announcing.

"This is it. For all the champagne, glory, and gold!"
O'Mara holeshot, Ward 2nd...."Awwww Ward goes down....O'Mara goes down!"
"Barnett. About as safe as a piranha in 4th. And he will move up on Glover like PacMan"
"Lechien has gone off the track, the machine has been derailed"
"Hannah's in front...26 years old says 'I feel like I'm going on 48'."
"I asked Hannah what he predicted for the other riders tonight, he said 'pain and misery' "
"Barnett, a man with all the subtly of a Sherman tank"
"Bailey, his legs flailing in the air...a classic Flying W!"
"Hannah suddenly coming to life like he got a transfusion"
"Whoa Hicks is down. Hannah could've of hit him and that would have been all she wrote momma"
"O'Mara sitting in the pits watching Hannah get off the bike."

Thanks for that. Classic Supermouth.

Would be cool to see but we can't even sell out the smaller stadiums.

I remember watching SX at the silverdome and that place was always packed!! Today SX attendance is weak! Sometimes the TV coverage dosen't show the upper seats because they are empty! Go back and watch some of the earlier races and check out the attendance compared to now but the silverdome Always seemed to be sold out!

They used to sell those tread head seats for next to nothing! Now there is nothing cheap about going to a race. I wish they would bring them back

The current live TV package is 99.99% of the reason why the stadiums aren't full anymore. If my choices are sitting next to some drunk asshole and then fighting traffic to leave, or sitting on my own couch (being a drunk asshole) without dealing with any traffic, I know which way I'm leaning.

I was there that year as well (the big ice storm) we had to find a different hotel because of the massive power outage. When we finally found one I remember the desk clerk saying 'you guys obviously are not from around here. I suggest you stay in your rooms, keep the doors locked at all times and if you need food, order take-out. Good times.

Best SX memories ever from there as a kid. The Saturday night races were packed. Pontiac had the coolest vibe to it.

Saw a lot of cool things there! I was there the night Mcgrath broke is wrist in 98. When stanton knocked himself out in 93 and the ice storm of 03 when mcgrath was doing his retirement tour. I watched my dad race the dome in 96 always wishing that I could race it but then they stopped doing that.Pretty sad to see the place go out like this.

Also does anyone know the record attendance for a Supercross race and the venue it was held at?

I think the biggest attendance I was apart of for a race was around 56k people. Adding 25k plus more people would look insane.

Yep, I loved the GA Dome. The place was an excellent venue with not a bad seat in the place. I'm still unsure whether I'm a fan of the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium or not.

Well, I'm from Pittsburgh & I was 12 at the time. We drove through Detroit to get to Pontiac. After the 4.5 hour drive to Detriot, the extra 30 min to Pontiac wasn't much of a difference. Maybe I should just broaden it to Michigan. Your whole state sucks. That better? Laughing

Michigan does suck. That's why they are all moving to the Carolina. I'm surprised there is anyone left in the those states with the amount of snowbirds down here now.
