Cool, aside from Ironman, thunder valleye, and Muddy Creek the tracks have been almost the same for the last 25 years.

Pala, Elsinore, Utah, Steel City, Binghampton, and Kenworthy's have all been removed from the schedule. Thunder Valley has about a decade under it's belt.

I know Budd's was having issues with cashflow/money as there was a go fund me earlier this year to help keep the track open, something about back taxes that were never paid for the des nations, not sure if that got sorted out but seems like Jon and the crew have had a rough year. My first outdoors ever and the foray into my MX addiction was at Budd's, still have the program and ticket framed in my garage. Seems like our sport isn't too healthy lately.

Yes, i meant aside from the 3 i mentioned all the other tracks go back a long ways, so 75% of the schedule is the same as it "always"was.

I would hate to see Budds go. Love going to the nats and also for open practice. I will say, the start (which they implemented for the '07 MXdN) is terrible and needs to be re-thought/moved. The dirt is primo and the proximity to two large cities is a big perk, though.

I was confused by your comment since you said Freestone. Wasn't sure if we were talking about tracks that are new or that had gone away.

My entire point was that they've swung and missed recently on the 25%. If there are tracks on the chopping block, then I hope they do better at finding replacements instead of go the Utah and Elsinore route of a good parking lot and crappy dirt/track.

The outdoor calendar right now is filled with world class tracks. The only track I think plain sucks (for multiple reasons) is Hangtown, but I understand its legacy so I'm sure it won't be replaced anytime soon.
Hangtown could be alot better with a few runs of a disc.

Typing freestone was a brain fart on my part when i meant thunder valley.

Yes there have been some misses trying to find tracks in the right areas. Fron what i can tell there arent many national caliber tracks that are being screwed out of a national at the moment, but i could be wrong.

Three or four nationals on the chopping block? That's the first I've heard of that. Glad to hear Johnathan is making changes. High Point was on Memorial Day for more than twenty years but had to change because of the travel pattern requests of the race teams. It's never an easy decision....

Sadly, I believe Johnathan more than you.

Decisions like this aren't always easy to make, but if you are trying to grow the sport and attendance is lacking at a few events then it does make sense to consider other venues. If the attendance has been lacking and you haven't considered dropping Budds Creek then that would be more of a problem. Loyalty is one thing, but this issue seems to come up from time to time, making me believe you clearly have a hand in the decision.

mx 219, that's fine, but I believe I know what I'm talking about when I say it's news to me that three or four nationals are on the chopping block. We would all love to see more people at every round, especially Budds Creek. But that doesn't mean three or four are on the chopping block...

Are there 3 or 4 Nationals that do not have the contracts "that they want" in place right now?

Just yes or no, no lawyer speak!

No one has the contract we want in place, kkawboy14, or we would all have guaranteed 85 degree days, no injuries, and great racing. We just do the best we can with whatever we're dealt each weekend... And Matthes would be thrown out of our after-parties too.

No lawyer speak, kkawboy 14, I'm not a lawyer anyway. But again, no, there are not "three or four tracks biting their finger nails right now," other than all of us worrying about the weather and hoping the riders all stay healthy and nice crowds show up. I know we put a lot of work and money into High Point and are in the same position Budds Creek is is, hoping for good weather and a large turnout.

As long as MXSports is the promoter High Point isnt going anywhere (which is good for me too).

Bring back Freestone!
As much as I want a motocross in Texas, Freestone was a bit tough from a spectator aspect. I'd like to see Oak Hill get a shot, but I think it's just short of a national level facility. Good for amateur races, but probably not accessible enough for a National. Could be wrong though. Love racing at Oak Hill. I actually loved racing Freestone too.

MXSports was the Steel City Promoter, and I believe they've actually taken over as the promoter for Budds Creek the last couple of years as well. I wouldn't assume that makes any track safe forever. While I hope it stays on the schedule, Budds has had financial issues brewing for years.

Can we have a National at Mammoth? I'd go. They've got an airport and most of that other stuff all the smart guys are taking about.

It's not "too far" from a big city. Oh, hell...my bad.

Neve-mind: I thought Bishop & Bridgeport (CA) were big cities.

Freestone was horrible from a spectator viewpoint since the only place that you could see more than a single straight was in the VIP section. The location sucked too because it was too far from the Metroplex, Houston or San Antonio to draw the casual fan. Easier to watch it on TV especially if you had been there in person and found out you couldn't see anything.

Oak Hill is a former national site and has the space and track for a national. Track is a lot of fun for sure. I agree the road getting to it would be problematic.

Swan would be a good choice, as would Cycle Ranch (if it weren't almost dead due to the owner chasing butterflys or putting on some other type of hippie-fest)Whistling . Once again, access to either could be a problem. San Antonio being the tourist trap that it is could be a destination race for a lot of travelers.

As it is, looks like those of us in South Texas can either travel a thousand miles to a race or watch it on TV (if the local station doesn't preempt it for Lucha Libre or a Tejano FestivaTongue l.)

At least in the Metroplex you are closer to Thunder Valley or Ironman.

I meant series promoter. But you are right, nothing is safe forever. EPA shut down Steel City, i hope similar issues dont affect any of the current national tracks. I believe the Coombs family owns high point ( i could be wrong) at any rate it is vlose to the familys history and the home base of MXSports/RacerX which is why I think its pretty safe.

I thought Steel City was no longer a facility because of issues with the EPA, due to soil erosion or something. I was there the year Villopoto beat Dungey in the last corner of the first 450 moto (2012?), really liked the track layout/viewing, it was a bummer to see it fall off the schedule.

Demographics. Heat. Close proximity to other Nationals - would be my guess.

Flying Iron Horse Ranch anyone? Easily one of the best tracks in the country, near an interstate, international airport, etc. Do it!

Yep I went to freestone 3 Times. After the third time I never went back. Viewing was horrid. Went to Colorado one year tho. Now that is where it's at. Can see almost the whole track.

I'm not sure how demographically it's any different, or how the heat could possibly be a factor, but I have to think Buffs get precedence over any other nearby national.

If the track can't make it financially I understand, but being on the chopping block by the series is beyond me.

That answers the rumors then! Thx

By the way I didn't hear the rumors, I was just responding in a thread. Things written in here seem cold sometimes but my question wasn't meant to be cold, just an atttempt to squash the rumor!
