Before turning pro we all heard of JS, AC, KR, ect because of their talent growing up. But what are some of the riders to turn pro and made peoples head turn because of their speed no one thought they had?

Guy Cooper made it the hard way under the radar without much support even after he made it to the pros. He didn't make as big a splash as many others once getting there but earned his 125 national championship and several other top series finishes. He was also involved in one of the most exciting ama supercross races ever all the way until the end. Earned top 5 overall national numbers on multiple occasions as well as a top 10 overall national number without every winning a supercross race on US soil. Did win a world sx title though and was always giving it all he had no matter what the occasion. One of the all time fan favorites and as genuine of a motorcycle enthusiast of all forms as they come.

Villopoto. He was the second place guy. People had less confidence in him than Millsaps who was also a second place guy. Hell Villos dad is on record saying hes more like alessi than ryan and he never thought ryan would win because he didnt have the killer instinct. His dad said that on video. People more of less saw him as going to be a top 5...maybe, guy that once he peaked in the pros would settle in to being the second place guy and no more. People saw this and then thought that Alessi was going to be the next Carmichael.

Somewhere along the lines Villo developed the level of speed that only a VERY small amount of elite riders have ever reached (like 5 people in history) and also an aggression that allowed him to dominate everybody that challenged him. Dungey who is one of the most consistent racers the sport has ever seen was up against somebody much faster and just as consistent. Again Dungey is on video saying this. He was much faster than every rider on the track, every time he lined up, and just as consistent as anyone. Villo beat james straight up many times, smoked dungey, smoked reed, and his performance at the MXDN was one of the greatest displays of talent on a motorcycle the world has ever seen......on a 250 vs 450s mind you.

To be Honest in my opinion Villo and James are the two fastest riders the world has ever seen. Id give a slight edge to James in his prime....he also had a perfect season. Carmichael even said that James is hands down the fastest rider to ever touch a bike. To me Carmichael was like Dungey where he was very consistent, but had a much higher killer instinct, and wasn't afraid to ride over his head when he was challenged by james. Obviously James' style caused him to either win or crash out, villo had the same mindset to a slightly lesser degree, but somehow became very consistent as well......which was a DEADLY combo for the field. Raw speed I give james, 2nd of all time raw speed plus consistency id give to villo....but definitely he was not see as going to be what he became when he was an amateur.

There's some good one's in here. I don't know if he was hyped or not, but seems like he came out of nowhere to get a Suzuki factory ride and had some good results there. Sean Hamblin.

The junkyard dog.
Yah, I'd kinda go with this.

I guess it depends on what "Made it big" is considered.

Not sure I'd say RV wasn't hyped. He was 2nd to Alessi but everyone knew who he was and went straight to PC. J-Law had less hype, but beat him for Lorettas and Horizon right?

Dungey wasn't hyped, but as soon as RD signed him, well... the mx-world was pretty intrigued to say the least.

Dowd didn't really do amateurs in the traditional sense...

J-Mart wasn't really hyped, there as some hub-bub when he beat RC at that race, and won two national titles.

Will Hahn is kinda like RV in the sense there was a bunch of dudes above or very similar to him... Stroupe, Izzi, Lemoine, Cunningham... but he won a regional title, only Canard did better of that lot.

I wouldn't call Millsaps a second place guy in the amateurs. He had 9 LL titles according to the vault http://llvault.racerxonline.com/rider/davi-millsaps/races

A lot of those firsts are against Alessi and the others.

I will go with dungey strictly on personal experience. When I say personal experience I mean he raced in my class and I had no idea who he was till my dad told me decoster picked up a strait b class Loretta Lynn's racer and was a rookie! Then he went on to tell me he was a 9th or 6th place guy at us open when we raced 85s. I had no idea who this kid was....

Hard to argue against Stanton for this title. He wasn't regarded to be an overly-gifted motocrosser like Damon Bradshaw or Ron Lechien, but he just had the guts and desire. For a time, he was regarded by many to be the best in the world.

I say Dungey takes this crown easily...Some may have flown under the radar and done well (Seely, Peick, McElrath,...) but who else has ever gone from virtually no amateur record to one of the winningest pros off all time?

Or if you want to get your mind blown, look up 4-time world champ Joel Smets...First bike at 16, world champ by 24.

I forgot about Smets, but the same can be said about Dowd, didnt race his fiorst race till he was 20-21? Beat alot of big name people in his career and dude hauls ass till this day at 50+.
