kidney belts are very helpful so wear them if you don't want lower back pain.

I think it should be mandatory that you wear one....if your name is Josh Hill, to protect the fans from over exposure to his arse crack...Silly ...seriously.

Barcia and Wharton wear them I believe.

i used to always ride with my kidney belt. i was under the assumption that they protected your vital guts in the event of a crash?

im young, very fit, no back problems. i wasnt even aware that people wore them more for back support than anything else. is that what they are actually made for?

anyways, i recently bought one of those alpinestars kidney belts. two rides and ive stopped using it. it seems all of their products, or maybe just motox products in general, run really really big. cause the alpinestars kidney belt could not be more uncomfortable for me.

i also got one of there under-jersey roost protectors. ordered the size small/medium.....its huge on me and absolutely uncomfortable and completely defeats the purpose of wearing a roost guard under your jersey. because this thing is super bulky on my body. so, i stopped wearing that as well.

but i do like my alpinestars leatt-type neck protector/brace. and im getting a set of astrix knee braces soon. im all for safety, but not at the expense of my comfort.

is it normal for most riders to wear knee braces even if they have never had any knee issues at all?

and if youre not looking for lower back support, what exactly is the purpose of a kidney belt? if theres a real one, i will simply go get a brand of one that actually fits.

Bump for a funny topic.
Back in the Ole' days of motocross--a kidney belt was a must. The bikes of the 70's and 80's had little or no suspension. Plus the tracks were not well groomed. I still wear a kidney belt type at work. Guess I have weak kidneys.

I too had a clip together one in the 70's, l have a new, fully vented, Goldbelt in blue/white to match my gear but l rarely wear it; l think it limits lung capacity to tell the truth. I'm an 85 kg (not really fat) 57 year old.

kidneybelt is not for kidneys anymore, it is for discs in back. i have a fractured disc and even though i have killer core strength i need the belt to stiffen up the core package. makes a huge difference

Since switching from the 2stroke, I have never found the need to wear one. 450 is like riding a Cadillac through the rough stuff.

Im young and I wear one. Buddy of mine fell on his lower back and was in the hospital pissing blood and shit. If I can add a layer of protection to help avoid getting myself in that situation then I'm all for it. I find it a bit uncomfortable just walking around but once Im out on the track I forget about it.

Been wearing one for the last 25 years, it's compulsory over here for schoolboys I believe (certainly used to be), now it helps support my lower back when riding

I've been wearing one since I was a kid. I stopped for a little while the past couple years, but have started wearing it again. It definitely helps with lower back support.

The one I have is an older Fox Velcro belt.

I used to wear one all the time, then just quit using them.

I had a bad get off & separated my shoulder, also strained my back!

I went back to using a Kidney belt, but it only helped a little bit.

I donated a Kidney to my Cousin & the Doctor who did the transplant was a Motorcycle rider & he said to get a new Kidney belt & pointed me to the Kevco- Stubbs!

Absolutely the best one I've ever had! Two different height sizes 7" & 9" I use the 9"

Really glad I had it on for my last BIG crash, where I hit a tree & broke my back in 3 places, it keep me from getting some internal injuries to my gut.

Except it pushes it all out the top Angry

I Need to cycle more and babysit less Laughing

On a serious note, I raced once as a kid without one and I'd never do that again, they really help stop pain in my experience, I'm 41 now so if it hurt then it would probably end me now hahaaa.

26 years old and I am the only one out of anyone I know around my age that wears one. I wear a Kevco Stubbs kidney belt. I stopped wearing one for a little while, but then in 2015 I had a laminectomy and microdiscectomy on my L4-L5 and I bought a new kevco stubbs just before I got back on a bike. I wont ride without it now. Helps keep everything together and adds the extra support I need.

Same, Im 26 and I wore one as a kid but then stopped. After having a discectomy on my L5-S1 in 2014 I started running one again, it helps a little, and I'll take any little help I can get!

I still wear the thing, mainly it's mental from wearing it for 35 years riding.

Remember how bad ass the pro's looked back in the day with the belt only sticking out 2 inches, they looked mean and lean and the lower you could run that belt the faster you looked.

Keeps the jersey tucked in also, but I will say I look stupid with my fat hanging over the top of the belt now and I still buy the skinniest one I can find, and run it super low at the belt line, it feel's just right and mentally I feel good about it.

Kidneybelt was a part of the starterkit my dad bought me when I started to ride at age 3,5, been wearing once ever since. If I dont ride with one I get dizzy and just feel ill.

I just found my MSR Kevco-stubbs belt and started wearing it again. They are the only belt that has much use, imo. Very comfortable and great support. Even fits under jersey if you are worried about aesthetics, har....

Chances are if it isn't helping out a lot its probably a crappy kidney belt, I would look around for better ones as they do help out your lower back a lot when you pick the right one.

Thank god I was wearing one when I crashed racing a hare scramble - I got lodged between my bike and a tree - rash could have been much worse
