It would cost a lot less for a factory guy to build a replica than it would for a nobody to do same thing. The factory guy could also get things that the nobody just cant get. The factory guy could do all mechanical himself for free, just time. While the nobody would probably pay.

Ryan Dungey did a bike check with X-Games/ESPN some time ago and the Facebook page that shared that (if I remember correctly) had something like "75 000$ race bike" in the title (I might remember that incorrectly). That should be the right amount or close to it, because Moto GP race bikes go for 150k$ I belive.

$150K won't even get you a leased, seamless gearbox in MotoGP.

That's way off. $1 mil to get the customer version Honda with the standard gearbox and non pnumatic valves.

Mx racing is pennies compared to the cost of motogp.

Seems like I was ripped when told that Moto GP bikes are around 150k, thought that might be somewhat right since the best rider in estonia has 33k € veichle under him.

some privateers have gotten away with just minimal mods. not counting the bike itself

$600 suspension
$500-1000k engine HC piston pnp
$1000 exhaust
$200 graphics

this isnt counting wear items like chaing sprocket tires and assuming rider doesnt change anything else

Old thread I know I know. I talked to Steve Wagoner about the 02 Plano bike and he said they cost about 25k to build. Keep in mind this was a small satellite team. A kit suspension, special transmission from Honda, pc built motors with one off pipes for the old style cylinder, welding on the frames, machine work on the hubs and various pieces, met tec bolt kits, and so on. That doesn't include all the extra cases, tranny gears, and everything else used through it the season.

Well, think about this. How much money did Harley/ Buell spend developing a dirt bike before they scrapped the project? How many millions went into that? Honda was doing that every year for the 125, 250 and open class back in the 70's. Honda raced the open class all the way back to what, 1974? But they never produced a production open classed mx bike until 1981. None of those bikes had production parts on them. My 77 OW27 Yamaha is the same way. Super trick shit unavailable to mere mortals.
Have u rode the Yamaha? How many years, in your opinion, before a stock bike was comparable? Late 80s and 90s bikes seem about as capable as any current bike to me, esp. If the suspension has been swapped to the newer stuff

In Jeremy McGrath's book he mentioned the cost of a pair of forks for his Yamaha were $80,000.

if Yamaha mass produced that "works" fork, to exact specifications, the cost could be 10 times less.

if Yamaha made only a total of 1 fork, to exact specification of a production fork, it would cost hundreds of thousands to make, maybe more

if GM only made 1 2017 Duramax diesel truck, to exact specification, it would cost 10's of millions to make, maybe more.

works parts are definitely awesome, but in terms of sheer cost, logistics, knowledge, and labor to make, high quality production parts are way more impressive.

In 2017 where cases and frame all has to be stock, works cost has gone down. I would say there would be a few thousand in titanium, $9000 in suspension, $2000 in engine mods. Labour would be the biggest cost. Watch this video at 1:24. The power of these bikes is hugely exhadurated and the cost even more so. A motorcycle is a motorcycle. It's not 1970 any more where a company will make a rouge pig

The pricing of factory parts imported from Japan or Austria has a lot to do also with tax planning. By buying "5000 usd" titanium footpegs and other stuff you can offset some of revenue.

I always wondered if the "cost" had anything to do with taxes, and maybe its an advantage to value my race bikes at 1 million each, and not 50k?

As far as moto gp goes, even the used, moto 2 bikes are 150k. I imaging a real moto gp bike to be 10x that, if not more.

I never saw a price in this article.

That guy bought one, but I dont believe hes able to start it, or ride it.

I remember seeing a used motogp bike back in 2009 for sale on eBay. I believe the asking price was $1.7 million. Mx bike costs are just a drop in the bucket compared to motogp. And on a side note why are we all still posting on a 7 year old thread?

VR's former bike was actually ridden at last October right around the corner from you. Private track day basically so he could ride it. Was he "supposed" to? Probably not, but as someone said, what were they going to do......

This is a silly question. If a part is not available to the public, it has no price. The price you read in a magazine is a ballpark guess from guys who do not manufacture parts, run a machine shop, etc.

lets ne honest. the only way to get prices up that high is making parts that are custom, many of which will make no performance gain. if you factor in some guys wages in making the design and developing it is where all the cost is. theres no way these bikes actually cost that much to make them.

Most common sense/cents post in the thread.

A lot of $ is wasted, and should be used to add another rider
or pay a truck driver enough to support a family on one income instead of welfare wages.
or this or that.

The bike is the cheapest part of the equation by a long shot...the dollars are in the full time mechanic, full time engine guy, full time suspension guy, full time test guy, private test track, the million dollar guy twisting the throttle, the million dollar guys designing the bike and parts, the mulri million dollar machine shop, the semi, the driver, the pr people and everyone else.

No need to worry about what these things cost, be fast enough and you get paid a million bucks to wad up as many as you want. It really not that complicated of an equation.

Steve Lamson raced a 125 for fun around 2007. The motor was borrowed from Honda and it says these motors are $40K.

The question was "How much do the bikes cost?" Not "How much are private test tracks and mechanics?"

$59000 + shipping will get you all the 1979 Yamaha YZ technology you can handle. No other cost's involved.
