Gotta go with Guy Cooper too. Wasn't his nickname "Airtime"?

Guy always told me that if they would let him ride the 125 supercross class he would kill them. His luck with the 250 indoors wasn't always pretty but always kept you on the edge of your seat.

He also almost won the one and only AMA supercross held in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma but once again fell just short and him and Chicken battled in that one too.

If memory serves me correctly he did win a supercross race overseas or at least an overall for the two day program.

Back before he turned pro watching him race a KX 500 at the local races was quite a site also.
I was at the OKC Supercross that year. He was jumping some things no one else would.

He was killing a jump before a left hander. He'd jump off a small bump, and scrub over the peak of the jump, and land layed over sideways gassing it in the turn. He was destroying everyone...Right up until his last pass through the whoops.

Guy won one night in Bercy ('88) in great fashion (he was the only one doing a tricky triple and the crowd loved him) and could have won the 3-day overall that time...

But he was the "promotor's choice" to get in the main the night he won so he could not be eligible to become King of Bercy.
Jeff Ward ended up being the '88 King (without actually winning a night main).

Guy was a hero at the Geneva (Switzerland) SX though, I'm pretty sure he won the event several times.

What about the LA Coliseum Superbowl of 87? RJ was down & dead last in first corner, Fred Andrews led then Cooper got past and was checking out, but RJ hunted him down and got passed with half a lap to go, then toppled over in turn before whoops. RJ just got going to cross the line before Guy, who seemed almost as pleased as RJ to get second.

back in 1986 Guy Cooper raced the Belle Vue Supercross in Manchester. I ended up ferrying the Americans too & from their hotel. I only had a small Ford Escort car so Coop's was lying horizontal across Billy Liles, AJ Whitting, jeff Ward on back seat.
We went around a corner pretty fast and Coop's half slid out of the open passenger window!Shocked Shocked
Good job Billy Liles was a strong old boy and hauled him back inside!Wink

He stalled his bike in the turn and let Wardy get by I think. Didn't RJ get third in that race?

I tried to get matthes to do a podcast with guy a year or so ago. He said it was coming soon and nothing ever did.

Guy and Wanda are doing well last I heard from them. They have a little girl who is probably around 4 by now and is super cute.

Guy sold Cooperland around 02 or so to a family from indiana. I think Reid was their last name. Then they sold the track to Kris Brown and he did an amazing job with it. Kris sold it a couple years back to a guy from Arkansas. I've heard rumor of Guy possibly getting the track back though, which would be the best thing that has happened there since Kris left. Hopefuly it's true!

Guy is still the man. Him and his brother, chuck both are still crazy fast on a track and maybe even faster In the trees.

My pops use to paint his helmets back in the day when he rode Supercross and outdoors, so we have known each other for quite awhile.

I still wanna hear a podcast! Matthes?? Maybe dmxs??
Did it a long time ago, in 2010. It's good listen and on itunes as well.

I was at our regional AHRMA banquet last week and they had a pic of him on the slide show on some early 70's scoot with about 4 inches of travel, and he was about 18 ft. in the air. Unadilla I think. Nuts. Anybody out there have that one?

It was a small black and white pic in one of the mags, think it was in an interview of him.

That dude was core, and as real as it gets.
He was jumping a dumpster I think. This guy was awesome to watch. He would buck anything mid race

I was lucky enough to spend some time between races riding with Coop in the early 90's. A play riding session with Coop, Swink, Lamson and I was great. Ended with trying to see who could jump further up a hill. Coop went back to get a new spark plug and a light splash of gas to see if it helped. Lol. Fun times
