29 here and still feel like I'm 22

Except I can't drink beer like I used to

And my knees and shoulders hurt until about noon

And my cardio blows

I guess I only feel 22 in the mind

For myself anyway, I find less is more as I get older. My body doesn't respond well to working out everyday. I do the weights and cardio every other day and rest in between. When it's cold, I try to do something fun on the weekend like ride a fat tire bike, snow shoe etc

Diet seems to have a bigger effect on me as I get older as well. I love my beer, but if I can keep it to a minimum, that has a huge effect on my cardio.

I'm getting this done on Monday. I'll be 41 in Feb but a bad crash is 2004 destroyed my hip/femur. So after years and years of fighting through pain just to train/race it is time to get it fixed.

Doc tells me within 8 weeks i should be healed enough to train again. Lots of running isnt advised which sucks cuz that is one part of training I enjoyed. So I am going to cross fit some and mountain bike a lot. I have used a HR monitpr for years to keep track of my workouts to simulate race times and moto level heart rates. It gets tougher every year as this hip bullshit drags me down.

That is all gonna change for me come 10am .Monday morning. Doc tells me this will give me a new lease on life activity wise. Can't wait for 17 to get rolling!!!

Concept 2 has a workout of the day on their website. They also have vids on proper rowing form. You can do those. They have a short medium and long distance workout. Or you can do intervals. Go to T-Nation and type rower workouts in the search bar. Or just make up your own workouts. Google is your friend! Lol

Dude, you won't believe the difference once you get it done. My hip was so trashed I was crippled- could not even sleep at night (which led to trying to do it with alcohol). After the Affordable Care Act my hip was no longer a pre-existing condition and I could get a new hip.
When I woke up from surgery it didn't even hurt. I was up on crutches that same day. I couldn't see doing a lot of running though.
I am turning 50 this year and sometimes get the urge to go race again. I never did do any riding after my hip replacement.

I'm 47 an it seems that still to this day, The only thing that works the muscles for riding motorcycles is riding my motorcycle. I just mix up what kinds of riding I do. due to my last concussion I've been off for a bit but before that it was ride as much as possible.

My honest to goodness solution to rusty bones/joints is to not stop going to the gym. Seems the repetitive elevations in blood flow is what keeps me feeling loose.

One other thing- diet, diet, diet. I don't mean less food- I mean good food. I know some people think organic is BS but I don't believe so. I can hardly eat regular chicken now because it tastes like crap. But the average American diet is so horrendous and all the chemicals and stuff. Focus on diet and it will make a huge difference.

Another suggestion.

The "Insanity" workout is really good too and it does not involve weight if that is what you want to avoid. It really strengthens your core as well and that great for on the bike. You can buy the program online pretty cheap and it's a boot camp if that what you are looking for to get a jump on your fitness.

Combine this with a bit of yoga (flexibility and balance) and in a month you will feel like a different person.

Obviously a good diet is a given.

Tidbit: I was going to yoga classes for about 6 weeks 2 times a week. I used to not be able to balance on one foot while putting a sock on my other foot. Now I can no problem without even a second thought about it.

Im 42 and this last year was the first year i didn't work out like a maniac. I feel horrible. I just rode and golfed but didn't do much else and i feel like hell. About half way through the year my neck and back where i had surgery started hurting again and my arm, hip and leg have been going numb and causing me issues. Its like my right leg works great even though i have 11 screws and 2 plates in it but when i lift my left leg into my shorts or something it wont come 6 inches off the ground at first but i think it did. Nerves are so weird. Ive been resting the last two months and feel good enough to start getting back at my old routine to get the body strong and get a back in shape and hopefully it helps with strengthening which i think is a huge part of my issue.
Unfortunately i got the text of nightmares last night when the owner of the sweetest orange clay private track ever, i mean like heaven that i have been riding and just loving like a second home for awhile now just sold. I'm in mourning at the moment. But im going to stay positive and get back in shape, grab a new 17 crf450 and have fun. Great help in this thread. Thank you

Man....this thread turned out way better than I thought it would! You guys are freakin' awesome! I've read some really good replies and info on the training thing , and am always looking to try something different. So thanks to all you guys.

Btw.....last night when I started this , I had just got done doing my 3rd workout this week. I was pretty spent and then last night when I went to bed , I don't think I moved once. Slept the best I have in quite a while.

@Paw paw.....Brother you do give great advice in the bike mechanics section , but what you wrote in this thread is pretty dang inspiring! Thank you for that! I hope I'm still able to ride bikes at 70 years old too. I'll be 49 years old this Monday , and holy hell just one year shy of 50. When I was in my 20's and 30's , I never would of even imagined that I'd be riding in this point in my life. I'll keep trying , until I can't.

That's been the major concensus about getting it done is how much better I will feel when I wake up. Even the doctor was a bit dumbfounded that I managaed a Spartan Beast race on the damage I have.

Same here, I cant sleep anymore, it always just aches, and it is making my moods terrible for my wife/kids/coworkers/ect. I try to stay active all the time. Even at work I'm always in motion. But this hip has just destroyed my activity in the last year or so.

2017 will be a rebuilding year now. I have a wonderful team behind me to do it. My wife will be there helping me recover and get back to the condition I want. I am nervous but excited at the same time.

New year, new hip, new bike, new me! Cheers to the season coming up!!!

Kids, 57 today! No more running for me, but try to walk 5 to 7 miles a day and ride a 125, no lazy man 4-stroke for me.

People with any joint pain or bone pain should look into supplementing MSM, worked for me.

It's been mentioned a couple of times but as we get older, working out year-around becomes more important to overall health. I try to limit my "breaks" to no more than 10 days, usually just a week 2-3 times a year.

As I've gotten older, 42, my first goal is consistency. If I try to be a superman in the gym and can't do anything the next day then it was a waste. I try to build weekly workouts that I can repeat and gradually add 'workload' without getting injured or burned out.

Currently, I alternate days lifting and cardio. I always plan on working out seven days per week but life always gets in the way, so it ends up being 6 days, which is plenty. I think yoga is a great alternative to the traditional gym and cardio. Two days per week of gym, cardio, and yoga would be a great schedule, IMO.

PawPaw, love the advice you give on bikes. But this is maybe even better. I am an "old" 46 and just hurt my ankle casing a double. It's had me wondering how long I can ride, but you've given me some inspiration here!

'58 model here, cased a triple 5 weeks ago, blew out my Achilles in one foot, sprained the other. Needless to say I'm a POS right now. Re-evaluating everything now. Getting pressured to quit, not happening. Got a couple 75 year olds out here that are my heros. If I was in better shape I'd be in more trouble! No need to be faster!

My wife started dragging me to her trainer 3 days a week about a month and a half ago. They are kicking my ass!! I love it though. I am starting to feel pretty darn good! Been riding the timbersled a lot this winter as well. I am looking forward to riding season again!! Might even line up for the AX here in Redmond this year.

Hang in there Jeffro, I feel your pain bro.

JAFO,

I did notice that you were getting a little thick when I saw you at Rio....LOL

You bunch of winning little punks, Try being 60 & breaking your back in 3 places & still getting on the Track.

Yes it's tough & it's hurts to ride, but it's a drug & I get cranky if I don't ride.

So man up & get you self in shape & don't let yourself get out of shape, as the older you get the harder it is to get back in riding\racing shape.

Post a reply to: Us older guys....getting them rusty bones moving again.
