Except I can't drink beer like I used to
And my knees and shoulders hurt until about noon
And my cardio blows
I guess I only feel 22 in the mind
Diet seems to have a bigger effect on me as I get older as well. I love my beer, but if I can keep it to a minimum, that has a huge effect on my cardio.
Doc tells me within 8 weeks i should be healed enough to train again. Lots of running isnt advised which sucks cuz that is one part of training I enjoyed. So I am going to cross fit some and mountain bike a lot. I have used a HR monitpr for years to keep track of my workouts to simulate race times and moto level heart rates. It gets tougher every year as this hip bullshit drags me down.
That is all gonna change for me come 10am .Monday morning. Doc tells me this will give me a new lease on life activity wise. Can't wait for 17 to get rolling!!!
Push-ups
Windmills (yes the ones they made us do in elementary school)
Stretching
When I woke up from surgery it didn't even hurt. I was up on crutches that same day. I couldn't see doing a lot of running though.
I am turning 50 this year and sometimes get the urge to go race again. I never did do any riding after my hip replacement.
The "Insanity" workout is really good too and it does not involve weight if that is what you want to avoid. It really strengthens your core as well and that great for on the bike. You can buy the program online pretty cheap and it's a boot camp if that what you are looking for to get a jump on your fitness.
Combine this with a bit of yoga (flexibility and balance) and in a month you will feel like a different person.
Obviously a good diet is a given.
Tidbit: I was going to yoga classes for about 6 weeks 2 times a week. I used to not be able to balance on one foot while putting a sock on my other foot. Now I can no problem without even a second thought about it.
Unfortunately i got the text of nightmares last night when the owner of the sweetest orange clay private track ever, i mean like heaven that i have been riding and just loving like a second home for awhile now just sold. I'm in mourning at the moment. But im going to stay positive and get back in shape, grab a new 17 crf450 and have fun. Great help in this thread. Thank you
Pit Row
Btw.....last night when I started this , I had just got done doing my 3rd workout this week. I was pretty spent and then last night when I went to bed , I don't think I moved once. Slept the best I have in quite a while.
@Paw paw.....Brother you do give great advice in the bike mechanics section , but what you wrote in this thread is pretty dang inspiring! Thank you for that! I hope I'm still able to ride bikes at 70 years old too. I'll be 49 years old this Monday , and holy hell just one year shy of 50. When I was in my 20's and 30's , I never would of even imagined that I'd be riding in this point in my life. I'll keep trying , until I can't.
Same here, I cant sleep anymore, it always just aches, and it is making my moods terrible for my wife/kids/coworkers/ect. I try to stay active all the time. Even at work I'm always in motion. But this hip has just destroyed my activity in the last year or so.
2017 will be a rebuilding year now. I have a wonderful team behind me to do it. My wife will be there helping me recover and get back to the condition I want. I am nervous but excited at the same time.
New year, new hip, new bike, new me! Cheers to the season coming up!!!
As I've gotten older, 42, my first goal is consistency. If I try to be a superman in the gym and can't do anything the next day then it was a waste. I try to build weekly workouts that I can repeat and gradually add 'workload' without getting injured or burned out.
Currently, I alternate days lifting and cardio. I always plan on working out seven days per week but life always gets in the way, so it ends up being 6 days, which is plenty. I think yoga is a great alternative to the traditional gym and cardio. Two days per week of gym, cardio, and yoga would be a great schedule, IMO.
I did notice that you were getting a little thick when I saw you at Rio....LOL
You bunch of winning little punks, Try being 60 & breaking your back in 3 places & still getting on the Track.
Yes it's tough & it's hurts to ride, but it's a drug & I get cranky if I don't ride.
So man up & get you self in shape & don't let yourself get out of shape, as the older you get the harder it is to get back in riding\racing shape.
Post a reply to: Us older guys....getting them rusty bones moving again.
