I can't help but think there is a great opportunity here to market a 10 lap exhibition race between the two. Build a sweet trophy and let em duke it out midway through the SX season.

It took RC two years to beat MC in SX. In '99, MC got the title(duh) with RC finishing 16th down 241 points. In 2000, MC again with title, RC 5th down 109 points. When Ricky did manage to get the title in '01, MC was still 2nd down only 94 points. IN 2002 Ricky with the title and MC slipping back to 3rd down 106 points. It took RC a long to time beat him and MC was hardly at peak like RC was. If they raced SX, both in their prime, RC would never had been healthy enough to race MX. I mean, I was legit scared a few times for him. As far as motocross? I'd bet MC would have gone SX only sooner.Laughing

Anyway, they both rule and to this day have done positive things inside and outside of the sport. You can't really say one is better than the other. I can say my FAVORITE would be McGrath.Wink

I think MC could have been as good at outdoors as he wanted to be. It's not like he was a hack at it

In SX 31 or 32 vs 22 or 23 is definitely a sizable age gap... It had to have had an impact when RC finally won...

When James and Chad moved up, their impact was immediate... James won races after a broken arm and in 03 Reed won more races than RC and a rookie title fell off with a seat.

When RC moved up, MC was late 20s and smashed him for two years. Not doing outdoors, being older and RC's intensity at both would have been huge factors... We saw Chad and James' fall off when they didn't do outdoors.

Regardless tho, it's just semantics. I call him the GOAT, because overall he is the best. If you combined and averaged he is the best.

No point stating SX is different... cause what about Everts? Decoster? Where does the "official division" begin and end?

At the same time, no arguing MC was better at SX and would have spanked RC if they were same era...

I don't know. I absolutely love MC and he was amazing and dominant in his SX career but i feel if they started together RC would of found a way to beat him regularly real quick as he did through his whole career with everyone. MC is best at Sx because RC wasn't there from the start. RC owned everyone on a track for dirtbikes and found how to win right away. I think if RC wanted to win gncc or any other form of motorcycle racing he would be champion of it as well. The guy was a straight animal who would figure out how to win.
MC won 250 supercross his rookie year. It took RC 3 seasons to figure out how to beat McGrath. And McGrath was 29 when RC finally got it done. I know what you're trying to say, but I don't think it's entirely accurate.

Consider that McGrath created Carmichael. He created the GOAT. They are interlinked, interwoven. Because after nearly a decade, with no one able to successfully outgun McGrath in SX (yes I know about 97), it took Johnny O'Mara and his intense training program to change the tides, revolutionizing the sport in the process.

Think about that.

It was BECAUSE of McGrath's unbelievable abilities, that it became evident (nearly 10 years later I might add) that in order to dethrone this champion, it would mean changing everything we knew about training, about preparation, diet, and mentality.

Johnny O'Mara, brilliant as always, saw precisely what others didn't. He knew instinctively what it would take to beat McGrath. And he, along with others, reformed this young man into what he eventually became. Without McGrath's bar set so high, there would be no GOAT. I think it's kinda cool to see it that way, because it's the truth.

Again, the greatest Supercross of ALL time is 2001 San Diego. Why this hasn't been echoed more baffles me beyond reason. If you don't "get" why that race [in particular] is the greatest showcase of Supercross on so many levels, I'm at a total loss.

Thing is there are very few pros who dont say RC is the Greatest of all time. Decoster, Everts, hannah all say Rc is the GOAT. case closed.

Honest question from someone who didn't see much of McGrath's career: what was his level of competition like compared to RC? When I look at the names of who they beat, it seems to me that RC was facing stiffer competition, but I'm not all that familiar with some of the guys back in the 90's.

Can't really answer a question like that, it's all relative. Whether the competition at the time of MC was rated a 1 or a 10 (on a scale of 10) for that era, MC was that much better than all of them. Same goes for RC too.

There is one thing to keep in mind. When MC made his comeback he was according to him, faster than when he retired. How did he fair? 3rd. or 4th. generally. He had nothing for RC or James. There is no dishonor in that, it's just how it shook out. RC won 70 outdoor motos in a row! That record I predict will go unbroken for a long long time but it would be awesome to see it happen.

For outdoors, people seem to forget that McGrath didn't get serious about it until '95, which he won. He should have won the title in '96 cause he was killing it until the little screw up near the end of the season tweaked his ankle. He couldn't get it done in '97 riding the Suzuki RM 175, and in '98, he was leading the outdoors after the first 3 or 4 races when he discovered his wrist was broken from the Pontiac SX crash earlier that season. He most likely would have won the outdoor title that year the way he was riding. They were both good at each discipline, but MC was just a tick better at SX to the same level that RC was better at MX, IMHO. Face it, they were both bad asses.

More combined pro titles and not even on the same page in amateur titles. And let's not forget the first rider to run a perfect season, and who retired at a younger age.

MC might of had better style and technique and 2 more SX titles, but RC is THE GOAT!

They should just race each other right now and settle it! I'd like to see McGrath, RC, Emig, and Pastrana throw down right now.

If I'm not mistaken, this is the passing of the torch...

It must wrangle RC's ego to know that even though he is undisputed the greatest this sport has ever seen, he is far, far away from being as being as well loved and respected by the fans as Mcgrath is, because he (RC ) seemed to have an arrogant and shitty, entitled attitude at times. His 'ask me anything' here on vital was proof to me how humorless and unfriendly his attitude is. MC seems like he most laid back, likable guy ever.

RC is the GOAT for sure. He is the Lance Armstrong or Barry bonds of MX. Like them he did things no one thought possible, completely dominated his sport during his era and his feats will never be duplicated.
