If it’s truly your dream I’d say try it for a few years and then reassess. If you wait too long life happens and has a tendency to limit your options (school, marriage, house, kids, etc).

I was in your shoes once and before I knew it I had too many responsibilities which required a different life plan. With respect to work I got my engineering degree and a long successful career in Aerospace. However, although my career was exceptionally challenging I still maintained engaged with the sport I loved, particularly with respect to the technical and mechanical side as that was my course of study in school. I have to say, over those many years there wasn’t a week gone by that I didn’t think about a job within a true professional race team as I dreamed about in my teens.

More to my point. I was financially set and retired at age 55. I moved out to Corona 3 years ago to be at the epicenter of MX/SX and began sending out resumes to all the local race teams and support organizations. In fact I still do. I offered my time for FREE to sweep floors or do whatever was necessary to get my foot in the door. Bottom line, apparently nobody wants overqualified almost 60 year old help, even for free.

So, if you got a shot take it now while you are young.

Can you explain why somebody shouldnt have a mentor that has been there and done that already?

Kinda like reynard, hes got some of the best under his wing.. the pros allow him to mentor and coach them but an aspiring person shouldnt? Im so lost how it makes sense at all.. not even mad

A mentor is a good thing no doubt... but just because someone didn't "make it" doesn't mean they can't offer solid life experience advice. Life happens to everyone "make it" or not.. So perhaps advice on why they didn't make it to the goals they had set and what they could have done differently to achieve them would be great advice to listen to. This is why I disagree.

Ill give my advice for whatever it's worth. Im in a similar situation, 21 yrs old and still looking at the future with no idea what I want to do. Living in the Silicon Valley, if you don't get a degree then you're pretty much stuck with a labor intensive job for the remainder of your career. Don't get me wrong I love working with my hands and such, but not for the rest of my working life. I'm finishing up my business degree right now and still uncertain where I'll go with it. But while I'm in school and working at the local race shop and wrenching on some top offroad rider's bikes here in Nor Cal. What I've realized when working on the bikes, you better expect to put in A LOT of time working and not get much credit (if any, even if the bike you worked on went undefeated in the worcs series..) and not get paid a whole lot. But for me the combination of the two has been awesome. I'm doing what I love while still being responsible to have something to fall back on. I've also made a shit ton of connections with people in the industry (KTM, Fox shocks, and Feld) and plan on using my degree and experience to get my foot in the door after school. I guess what I'm trying to say is damnit chase your dream and try to make it work...but it doesn't hurt to have something reliable to fall back on. Good luck

The contacts you get through a bike shop are crazy. I'm slow as shit and still get good support from reps and the shop. Have also met people in here that will take me on for engineering vac work. Retail is a good place to start

If you want to work in the motorcycle industry, go for it and have fun. If you want to make money get an education and a job with good health insurance benefits. Then you could afford a bike, ride or race on the weekends, and after work if possible. The best set up would be to hook up with a very rich girl that loves you, sex, motocross, and cleaning your air filters!!!.

That means you can ride all day!

Working in the industry sounds great, but it isn't glamorous and you won't have much time to ride.
Do not agree. If you are interested IMHO, pm me.

Advice from your pres. Chase your dream and earn money at the same time

12/1/2016 4:42am
If you are looing for a career then AX isnt the way to go unless your on my side of the track .If you just want your pro card win some NESC races get bumped to pro class then sighn up for a national like everyone else. If you want your SX liscence you have to do AX and being from New England and never riding a AX or SX track good luck! Top NE guys Rando Canning Brooks had to work real hard and still almost couldnt get there SX indorsment in a series of races . If you want a career in MX then find a job in the sport racing can still be fun that way becouse you know as well as every one out there if you dont have Dowd or Decotis speed being from NE then there is no money to be made running at a national level . Look at PD603 started racing at 4 pro liscence at 16 has a SX track to ride in his back yard and all of the heart ache injuries and burning thousands of dollars till he realized theres a better way to make money and ride . Im in the industry and he is making more money then me training and mechanicing for a young rider. And this year he has 2017 bikes because he didnt race nationals and alot of local events. Its a double edged sword i am not trying to discourage any one from trying Hell i need guys like you trying so i can make my money but i know you your Dad and im telling you as a friend and threw experience you will spend not earn racing dirtbikes and im sure many will agree . If i see you on the Cincinnati track great but please try and get to a real pro AX or SX track first it isnt as easy as you think exspecially with 15 other guys on it . SOB DBMs in Arkansas JWTF Club M X the DTF if weather holds and then see if its your thing. Good luck and maybe see you in Cincinnati .

If you dont like taking advice from an old dude like me, take it from this guy. This is absolute gold.

Bull crap kid, follow that dream or you'll live in regret for years. I lived the dream for two years and it was great, i made a thousand memories. Go live your dream for a few years and along the way make friends and build bridges with everyone you can and when you move on you could very well have some open doors in the industry to a career.
THIS.

What about a trade? Moto only takes a guy so far. Givr but you need a back up plan. If you love the rush of moto why dont you check out becoming a lineman. Very exciting work, helicopters, heights. Its a great career and you can stack some serious cheddar if you like overtime. Most of us working in the high voltage industry make 2-3 times what teachers, labourers, certain engineers make. Not only that you have one of the most powerful unions on your side so you dont get laid off. Which now adays is a really important thing. People always need power! You can still ride on weekends and some evenings. I enjoy riding more now than i ever did even though i dont get too as much. Have money for whatever parts and bikes you want. Trips down south! I see a lot of young guys piss away most of their twentys only to realize they maybe should have gotten an education whether it be on the job or in a classroom.

So I went to the first 5 AX races. No I did not qualify. First rd. 70th, 2nd rd. 68th, 3rd and 4th rd. did not even look, But the fifth round was a different story. I did both classes. I went out for the first 3 practices, and I was running about 50th/45th. I went out for my last lites practice. I knew I had to just get through the whoops. I felt good on the bike and I felt like I set some heaters. Checkered flag comes out. I look at the time board, and my name was not on the board from last to 25th. I thought maybe my transponder died or something... I waited to see the 1st to 24th place, and I was more than pumped!!! I was sitting in 17th! I made the night show!! I get back to the pits, get on my phone to check live timing. By the time I got on my phone, I was sitting in 21st. After the last practice I was bumped to 35th, I was then bumped to 41st. No night show.
I would say AX was very hard. But I figured I could make it within the next few weeks. (I was riding a BONESTOCK 250f, I felt good on it though!) I unfortunately broke my thumb practicing at Dirtbike Mikes facility. I am done racing arena cross this season, but will be mastering it in 2018! Thank you Dirtbike Mike for the opportunity!

Follow your dream of racing and working in the MX industry no matter what "IF" you are willing to see it thru to the end and not stop short and settle for being a schumk like everyone that will tell you you need to give it up and get a job and pay bills and be responsible like the rest of the schumks who either never had a dream or gave up on one.

I tossed a college education and secure future to follow a dream of being a touring sound engineer.
No experience, no contacts, no clue where to start just a drive to do it.
long story short i retired at 50 bought 40 acres of land built a killer MX track and now spend my days riding or playing around mixing stuff in my Studio...those who said i was crazy still working dead end jobs or really good jobs but little enjoyment in life.

There was nothing easy about it and i worked my ass off yes it was fun touring with rock bands and a life experience few get but there were many sacrifices and very low times when giving up sounded so so good. That is when you will know for sure how much you want it.

Stay lean don't take on a lot of crap that will tie you down be ready to go all the time it's somewhat a lonely life but very rewarding doing things your way.

I am living the life I want! It's one hell of a life! I'm going to work My ass off and get my 2017 goals accomplished. Im now kind of back to square one with the whole job situation and paying for riding. But I'm going to figure it out. When it comes to the people telling me I need to work instead of ride and follow a dream, I just have to go out and prove to them a dream does not always mean fantasy!
Thank you for your words!

good progress. The whoops are probably the hardest in AX for a reason, cuz its the only spot they can separate guys. find yourself a track and get some seat time in.
