Chris Canning to Race 125 in the Outdoors? Must read!!

Yea and it's his life. He gets to throw his leg over whatever bike he wants to.

I think I'd rather see him on a competitive 250F first. The dude has the talent and work ethic to have EARNED some kind of support other than clapped out stocker with a pipe and revalve.

I'd love to see like 4-5 guys on 125s against the 250s. It'd be cool to have a little series within a series. If the AMA won't give us a dedicated 125 class, we can just say screw it and make our own. Then you could crown a winner at the end of the season based on who the best 125 was. Just a thought...
Maybe it would send the AMA and manufactures a message? 2 stroke sales are crazy right now, down here at least. Went to the track last weekend and there was over half more new ktms and yamahas then any 4 strokes..

WHY: Nobody knows who you are. People like and respect people who ride 2 strokes. Ride a 2 stroke= recognition and respect. Same reason why people do unpaid internships. Later on down the road you hope to benefit = team, support, fan base, etc..

It would be even more awesome if they made a 125cc Amateur race before the pros at select rounds. Kinda like the All Star thing that Monster Energy Cup has, only A class riders on 125cc machines and they do 6 rounds. Maybe 20 minutes plus 2? This would also give the A class riders a chance to ride the tracks before going pro and also give the fans the pleasure of hearing a full 125cc gatedrop. How awesome would that be.

ive been preaching this for awhile.

id like to see a PRO-AM 125 class. no age limits, limited support. no homogolation rules. can run it as the intermission race between motos

Yeah that would be the ultimate goal behind getting guys on 125s in the 250 class. The idea behind getting a few guys on 125s in the 250s is to gauge interest among the fans and spectators. Once the AMA sees how excited everyone gets anytime a 125 goes by full-throttle, they'll get the dollar signs in their eyeballs and start working on a new class. But until we get a few guys in the 250 class on 2-strokes, that won't happen. I don't think they'll gamble and go all in on an entirely separate class unless they know it makes sense monetarily. The only way to do that is to show that people WANT to see 2-strokes and will follow the racing each week, instead of being FORCED into sitting through a novelty race in between the premier class races.

I like 2 strokes as much as anyone but considering the cost to get to the nationals, the time you spend training, and what you can expect in return why? I mean you have dug a hole that you can never climb out of. Meanwhile the kids you came up with are learning and improving riding 250F's.
In my opinion, the 125 actually teaches you more than any other bike because it forces you to be more efficient and carry more speed. No chance he's competitive on that 125, but if he's getting more attention finishing 32nd on a 125 than he is finishing 23rd on a 250F, plus having fun, I think it's a net positive.

If I had any kind of industry connections or business savvy, I would try to get a few sponsors together to back a 125 National purse... Payout the top 3 guys for their finish in the 250 if they ride a 125cc two stroke. Those guys aren't making any money and they aren't earning points. It would be cool to reward them for putting on a 125 show with some cash.

anyone that watches AMA national know's the name Steinke , i don't live in the states but follow both SX and outdoors i could not tell you anyone name outside the top 10 of the 250 class but i know Steinke , if he was top 15 on 250F i could not have a clue who he was , being know and people taking an interest brings sponsorship and that brings cash .

it was very smart move if you have an ounce of business sense
What does a person make in purse money to finish 20th on a 250f compared to 32nd on a 125?

What kind of support and sponsors does a person bring in if he finishes 20th on a 250f or 32nd on a 125?

What kind of following and media attention does a person get if he finishes 20th on a 250f or 32nd on a 125?

What kind of maintenance costs does a person incur doing an entire season on a 250f or a 125?

125 wins every time in those scenarios. There's your answer as to why.

This post, and the one from xnationalwrench, pretty much echo my sentiments, but maybe this is a means to an end...if he can qualify the bike. Chris has done more, with less, than probably any rider on the circuit, and there are more than a few guys who he has outperformed over the years, who have moved on to progressively better rides. I doubt Chris has established a "brand" for himself, knowing that he is fairly reserved when it comes to self promotion, and maybe this will help him in that regard, but ultimately, landing a ride with a 250 satellite team would be ideal for him. He just got his SX license, then got injured the week of the first race he was entered in (Foxboro). He had a couple top tens in Arenacross, in only a few events. Whatever bike he rides, I hope to see him back racing the nationals soon...like Glen Helen soon.

Man , I think this is totally badass. I'm not sure why the negative replies came in here? Losing my faith in the MX community on here as of late.

PS.....Good luck Chris!!

Basically the same as every other year, there's a reason you dont see PRs announcing it

If a 125 is so underpowered relative to the 250f that it makes people laugh at those who race it maybe it is time for the powers that be to pull their heads out of their asses and adjust the rules. What these guys should be racing out there against the factory bikes are 250 two strokes.

Also....if they don't want to break their own 4 stroke cheater rules....then make a damned 125 class!!

The biggest crime ever commited in this sport...was getting rid of the 125 class!! That right there is 100% truth!

Well I never really heard much of him before, so it's already working. I like it, he wants to battle with Steinke so he seems to be aware of what's possible on that bike results wise. Better to be 35th with a lot of insta followers than to be 25th and no one knows who you are. Welcome to 2016

According to Ricky Bobby, if you ain't first you're last....

So I guess it's not a bad idea to jump on a 125 and stick out from the pack. There's only a handful of guys who can actually podium and get the spotlight, not the guys in 10-40th. IMO it's more exciting to follow a 36th place guy on an underdog 2smoker than a guy who consistently finishes 10-20th on a thumper.

It's uncanny (unCanning, haha) how almost every time it appears that things are looking up, or a significant goal is within reach, Chris gets injured. His luck is beyond bad. Hopefully he's back on the bike soon.

I wish the guy the best, I love two strokes, 125's in particular. I don't hate four strokes, I think they are great, but I do think that what the ama, with tho connivance of the factories have done to motocross, hasn't been good for the sport or the average rider. I think the average guy would have more fun, more affordably on a two stroke.
I remember the 70's and 80's and the 125 class was a very big deal and arguably the crowd favourite.
I'm not keen on some compromise under 16 125 support class...I'm a dreamer, I would love to see a full on return to a national championship 125 class like the old days when they ran a 125, 250 and 500 class on the same day and the factories used to field their finest talent in the 125 class...those were the days!
I would love to see that 125 class opened up to allow full on works bikes to be included, so that any of the manufacturers could build a bike and participate...
I would love to see it opened up so that there is no differentiation between four and two strokes... Just equal displacement .
I don't think that policies of exclusion ever work...the more the better....Bring back the ama 125 national championship class and just let the factories deal with it...ktm and Husqvarna will be all over it, Yamaha would be in and TM ...Honda, Suzuki and Kawasaki would try to prevent it...but the fans would absolutely love it...no democracy...that's the way the world is now I guess

Oh, yeah , I forgot...125's are capable of astounding lap times in the right hands and under the right conditions.
Just thinking back to the humiliation that world 500 champ Dave Thorpe on his full factory HRC RC 500 works bike suffered at the MXDN in Italy in 1986 at the Hands of Johnny O'Mara on what was basically a stock cr125 with some porting, a pipe and some works suspension...
I'm just wondering how one of today's top 5 250 riders would go ( outdoors) on a fully backed 125 ride? How far back would they dip...? They would , but how far?

Out of curiosity I checked the results of a couple 2004 nationals. At Washougal the fastest 250 (2-stroke) moto 1 time was 2:25.87 by Carmichael. The fastest 125 time was 2:28.52 by Stewart. Granted not the same comparison but should give you a pretty good idea. So definitely can run fast lap times on a 125. And btw Matt Walker also ran a 2:28 and Hepler a 2:29.
