It will be horrible. They need to do something about the tracks to make the the individual races better. And the chase will absolutely not make the individual races more exciting. The chase could actually make it even worse since the top guys will probably not go 100% in the early rounds only to minimize the risk of injuries.

But hey, why not just script the races? Go all out "circus mode" when you're at it!

Again:

The Chase, is more about bringing interest to who is 7th thru 12th, NOT who is first!

Will the racing be better? There will be more "slamming" goin on!

Yes, Dungey could have clinched early and it would lower the excitement.

Roczen, Tomac, Canard, Barcia, Stewart, Reed, Anderson, Seely, Musquin, and or Bogle could have raised the excitement level at any time.

Someone needs to step up and be competitive instead of stacking the rules against success.

Well stated.
I agree well put. Stop trying to be like stick and ball sports..that's why I don't watch NASCAR anymore.

It'll be 40 years of SX next year. In that time we've had 11 series won by less than 25 points. Seven of those series were legitimately contestable for the 2nd place guy, ie he had more than a snowball's chance in hell of winning...

Therefore, 75% of the time, the series is a fucking runaway... And interestingly those close periods all came through the 80s or 03-11. Two periods were there was a surplus of talent... Well we're still in a talent deep time and Dungey almost did it 3 races out.

If the last 40 years proved anything is that there will always be the year after next to change it back if it's no good.

I don't understand why everyone is against the chase. You get 10 rounds to hone the bike and test against the competition. Instead of people having to ride hurt or promote unnecessary risk early in the season, the riders will have a greater opportunity to build momentum. Mechanical failures or off nights hamper the championship no matter what the format.
Exactly 10 rounds of racing that mean jack shit.

A chase pretty much just gives us an extended pre season with riders doing what they have to in order to secure a place in the chase.

Man it is going to be awesome when teams realise their rider has secured enough points to make the chase with a couple of rounds to spare in the regular season and start benching their riders to make sure they are healthy for the chase. No point in risking your rider on track in a practice race if it is not going to count towards the title.

I think it will add a lot of excitement through the end of what has often become a stale season. I can see it happening for thst reason alone.

Dungey could have clinched with two rounds left. That's great for him, but not very exciting.
The press likes it because they get tired of coming up with storylines for their features/articles. Mathes point is that people aren't going to stop watching because of the chase, so he thinks it should move forward! really! This is a common theme with the press and series management. Screw what the fans think.

Business are not built by ignoring the customers. Businesses are not grown by ignoring the customers. The excitement comes from the beginning when the guys are fresh. Artificial pressure at the end when guys are injured, tired, and mentally sorted will have an adverse effect on the longterm health of the series. If you were disappointed in villopotos early retirement, wait until the chase. These guys need more rest, and more hope. That comes from more downtime, and more series starts. Shorten the series and/or break it up into more than one series.

Crush, I don't think they will ever go back to the original point system if this Chase system proves to be a debacle. Maybe they'll just tinker with it every other year like NASCAR does.

It's true that the last couple of races can get boring and predictable under the current point system. But a Chase would probably just move the boring races to the middle of the schedule when most of the top guys have already locked in a spot in the playoffs.

Already, many of the top riders won't race a USGP or they skip the MXdN to be better preparated for Supercross. Next year, we might start to see some press releases of Chase-qualified riders being "injured" during the week in practice and having to sit out a couple of SX races in order to be ready for the Chase.

Feld is going to have to find a way to motivate these guys to continue showing up. Maybe win bonuses to be counted in the Chase. I mean, why risk further injury if you are already locked in?

That's called moto, and that's why you like it. Survival of the fittest, not survival of the luckiest. And you keep saying they can always go back. Not true, once it changes, and historical records do not correlate. You can't go back home.

Of course they are for it, they are industry "insiders". It's not going to change my life, I'll still watch the races if I can if there is a chase or not. If it's such a good idea, why isn't there talk of doing it for the outdoors?

I do not understand the "excitement" of a series. There is no excitement between races. The excitement starts when the gate drops and ends soon after the checkered flag.

There should be no champion, only race winners. If there absolutely has to be a champion... make it the guy who won the most races.

Dear little baby Jesus in a tuxedo t-shirt we are talking about racing, the epitome of living in the moment, pure unadulterated competition. Let a race be a race and let us not screw it up.

The purpose of the chase is to make the final few races exciting and fun for the fans, because we as fans complain that SX is boring towards the end becuase the championship is all wrapped up. But here lies a problem.

The first 10 rounds will actually be boring because those races mean nothing, yeah the leader may get some additional points but at the end of the day those races are just races that qualify them for the Chase. I know for me by the time April rolls around I am ready for outdoors because 17 rounds of the same tracks does get old. Even if the Championship is on the line, I want to see two 30 min motos plus 2, mentally I have moved on partly because I am riding outdoors at that point as well.

The Chase willl not Solve any problems it is just a change for the sake of trying to keep fans excited with the hopeful goal of putting more bodies in the seats at the final few races. Attendance has dropped and FELD is feeling the loss of Revenue and they are trying to figure out how to increase attendance to increase their Revenue not make it better for us Fans.

And I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and accept that in your first post you were expressing your honest opinion that you like the idea. Then you show up to make fun and demean the idea I presented in a manner that would have gotten Lenny clicked. We're talking about a Chase, trying to connect me into the Target thing is a cheap shot. Makes me feel like you've been directed to shut down anything that sounds like it might be a threat to the idea. And don't get me wrong, I doubt it would work but it would be a way for some of us to express our displeasure of trivializing the sport we've loved for a long time.

I would have ignored anyone else's comment, but you disappoint me Steve.
Apparently, John, it's okay to be a condescending ass, and reply in the fashion which you discipline others for, when you're the boss. Ah, the privileges of rank and ownership.

Trouble is, if they make the change, it will be the new standard and it will never go back, regardless of the popular opinion.

I think we should have 17 individual 1 round championships...then total all those points together and award an overall champion. Wink

A "chase" format does not change the actual on the track racing. The on the track racing is stale and chase format doesn't fix that. I've posted several times how to fix it. I don't take credit for it, the idea came from Mickey Thompson himself, who knows a thing or two about putting on a race. The start of a race has far to much influence of the results. Meaning the first 50-75 feet (3 seconds of racing) determine the remainder of the race. Until this is resolved, no points format change does anything for the on-track racing. Which at the current moment is about as exciting as curling.

I'll be happy to copy and paste my previous messages on this topic if anyone cares...you will find the solution to make the "racing" better.

I am re-posting my comment from another thread on how to make SX racing infinitely better....

It's not complicated at all. No need for a "chase" format. The format of the series is not the problem. The problem is too much of the actual race itself is determined in the first 75 feet.

We need to rethink the traditional starting format and do something different. We need more action. More meaningful racing. We need to see more passes. More privateers starting up front and more stars battling through the pack to get to the front.

All you need to do is these two things.....

1. Invert the start order for main events. Last qualifier gets first gate pick and so on.

I know what you are saying, this will make people sandbag in the qualifiers. See item number two. Item two is important for item one to work.

2. Give out some championship points in the qualifiers as well as for mains. This will eliminate sandbagging completely. Make the points meaningful and you will see epic qualifiers. Everyone knows how important points are and this will ensure no one sandbags. Star riders will race to win the qualifiers just as they do now.

If these two things were implemented then the racing would drastically improve. There is nothing better then seeing a star rider come through the pack. We want to see passes and racing, not follow the leader. The start has become too important with the current format. To much of the race is determined in the first 75 feet.

Inverting the main event start order would make it so privateers start up front more and the star riders might start in the back a bit more. This will also give all sponsors more exposure. The cream will always rises to the top just as it always does. But we just might be able to see more passes. Everyone always hopes one of the stars gets a bad start so we can see them come through the pack. Why? Because we want to see them skillfully and relentlessly race to the front. See Martin at Toronto...

I would also like to add that having a few more privateers start up front increases exposure for more sponsors. We need more riders to get exposure and thus more potential sponsors would get some meaningful exposure.

The fast riders will move their way through the pack (cream rises to the top). The fans will get more exiting racing.

If this format was implemented for one year you would wonder how we ever did it differently. We would actually see some awesome racing! Not just follow the leader and spending money on tickets to watch a 20 lap main where 90% of the race is determined in the first 75 feet.

You know the 1985 series were dual motos?

And we've had four strokes at double the engine capacity?

Next you'll tell me you can't alter the 2nd amendment...

Oh no.. changes to supercross/motocross. Egad!!

Ha ha ha.. I'm toying with you a bit, all in good fun.

But really, haven't other sports used playoff systems in the past to great benefit? Did anyone complain about the Broncos being NFL champions this year because they didn't have the best record after the first 16 games? What if San Antonio wins the NBA championship this year? Should we just give the trophy to the warriors now?

For goodness sakes, our sport is so archaic that we still let 2 wigged out 21 year olds pin their 220 lb 50 hp machines side by side into a tight left hander. "It's the mx way" they'll tell you.

Not much, but if he ever gets to the 450s he could win the premier title simply by having a good night in Vegas.
Yea because it will be based solely on Vegas
