Look at all of his responses and how little he is acknowledging the absolute real life gold you old fucks are dishing out.
It's not conjecture, but real actual men who have raced and ridden bikes for a LONG time and are ok, they are fine and they are still doing it. That is what everyone is trying to tell you OP.
Also he is 17 and has a Corvette so he's possibly getting some pussy that he shouldn't be if he had to go out and earn it and I don't have a lot of hope for those kind of kids. Seen it go bad lots of times once they hit college and after.
Life is dangerous man and everyone loses the eternity game. It's how you play. Get in that Corvette and buckle up twice because death is coming for you, motocross rider or not.
Mountain biking is a GREAT sport!
At this point I enjoy the climbs as much as the fast single track, and moto guys have an advantage.
My mountain bike friends say they can tell who rides MX right away.
If you do ride again, ride within your limits and keep in mind why you're there.
At 53, I ride a 125. I like the way it makes me ride, and it's also setting my own speed limit. I know that if I ride a faster bike, I'll use it. To each his own.
Seriously though, try mountain biking. It's a total blast!

Anything we do that gives us, "that feeling" is going to be dangerous to degree. I've seen kids get broke off snowboarding, even know people who died, seen someone get paralyzed mountain biking and a friend break his neck diving into a pool. Life is dangerous and the only way to be safe is sitting at home watching TV, but I know I don't want to live my life like that.

Anything that gives you a rush is going to be dangerous to a degree. I got sick of moto injuries and took up wakeboarding, my brother bought a stand up jetski. We both say neither give the rush of a bike but the consequences of a normal crash aren't as bad either. But I wakeboard on a river so after a big rain there will be logs floating down the river, some just below the surface. I could very easily land on one of those one day and get messed up. Take some time and let your buddies accident sink in, evaluate and you will pick the decision that's right for you
I don't.
I'm actually getting back into it this next spring and summer a little , and then even more the following summer. I love riding , but between that sport and my every day work , my body just doesn't get a chance to catch up and rest very often. did the 1/8th scale buggies in the RC driving stuff for quite a few years too , but that was more just " fun ".....nothing scary about it , and making a mistake usually costs you nothing. I found no thrill in the driving compared to flying. The RC flying on the other hand , is something really cool to spend time in the shop with. Building / slapping together airframes , figuring out your electronics , tuning the motor for the right sized prop ( electric and gas ). BUT.....getting into the larger aircraft can also be dangerous. People get hurt and killed and you have to fly responsibly.
I flew a few different times with Kyle and at the time he was one of the best aerobatic pilot's on the planet. 2nd in the world at the Tucson shootout to a 5 time world champion. I try to emulate his flying and am pretty close to it now days. But the hobby , right now in 3D flight is completely crazy to what Kyle was doing 10yrs ago. Anyways....I always dug this video of Kyle. Wait until about 1:10 in the video and then it gets kinda cool.
The hobby isn't for everyone , and it isn't cheap. But gawd dang is it fun!
.
honestly this sounds like your getting scared and making a knee jerk reaction. dont get me wrong do what you think is best for your self but this is the nature of riding a bike. I had a good friend get out of dirtbikes to do MTB because he got hurt. Well he got more hurt riding MTB and actually came back to a dirt bike. and ive known way more people who've been injured or killed in a car accident
if i got hurt the last thing id want is for my friends to stop riding because in that situation, if i wasnt hurt id be riding.
if you dont want to do mx do off road. or keep doing mx. no is forcing you to do what you're uncomfortable

My point is, it sound like you want to replace your moto activities with another. That won't happen. What you can do is experience other things outside of moto. As you find new expiriences enjoyable, you will find your answer.
good luck with your decision bro
My girlfriend has been a T-11 complete paraplegic for the better part of the more than three years we have been together. I've witnessed her ups and downs since the day she went over the bars on her mountain bike.
It's a lot of complicated emotions around my continuing to ride. I've never really been injured, and I won't pretend like I "understand the risk" every time I get on my bike (until it happens to you, you don't understand, IMO). But I take as many precautions as I can and focus on riding in control and "hitting my marks", sort of competing with myself in an effort to improve my precision and technique.
I love cars, and have raced purpose-built autocross racecars, but they don't do it for me like a motorcycle. The man-machine ratio isn't like being on a motorcycle. I always know the limiting factor on my bike is ME, so I don't have to throw a lot of money at the bike to get faster. Car racing is fun, but to me it just isn't worth the expense of chasing horsepower, chassis set up, tires, etc.
For me, I don't want to give up what I love because of what-ifs, only to one day get hurt doing something mundane and regret all those times I was too timid to go out and enjoy being active when I had the chance. Enjoy life while you can, just be smart about it!
And yes, at 17, go try all sorts of stuff. Maybe you find something you enjoy way better than moto. You never know. I'm 25 now, and my interests are quite a bit different than they were when I was 17.
Words to live by from Lynyrd Skynyrd "I've tried everything in my life. The things I liked, I tried twice"
There is risk/reward activities like mx, where the payback is worth the risk. The only thing I've experienced that trumps racing is being in contact on tour.
There are ways to numb the craving through strenuous activity/sports, mountain biking is one of them for me.
As a vet rider who spent 3 summers broken due to racing, and a spike in injury rates among my friends, I considered giving it up. I sold my street bike, bought an old car that I restored/modified and while it's fun and rips, it ain't the same. I still race, but I've decided to tone it down a bit, ride my pace and enjoy it... And I've been having the most fun I've had on a bike.
There is a personality that is genuinely attracted to this sport (aside from the poser crowd), and there will always be a need for these type of people to push themselves physically in some way, so anything you decide to do to get the fix will have risk involved.
At 17, slow things down, focus on school/career, take that car out and enjoy the girls. By the time you're 25, you will have your career set, some cash flow and then start racing again, you'll also have learned a bit of self preservation which will make you a safer rider.
Whoulda thunk it?
It's hard to replace this-
But after spending a few weeks in the hospital and missing 7 months of work, I'm having a "somewhat" safe/ great time with the cage around me....
But whenI Feel the need for 2 wheels, I get on one of these-
When I'm tired of getting dirty, I take this out and invite as many chicks as possible-
Hope that helps..... Lol
