Because everyone who races can afford multiple bikes.

OK, so I see two things here. And as particular as the legal system is, bank on this, there will be an amendment.
First, the AMA see's 250cc 4 stroke and two strokes as equals. Gray area to allow them to race together in the 250 pro class.
Second, my 2006 RM 250 can be ridden by any aged person as it is not 250cc. It is under 250cc as indicated on the side of the cylinder.

Now, don't get me wrong, I "get" what they are saying and trying to do here, but in this wacky legal world today, any bike UNDER 250 actual cc is exempt from the rule as I've seen it written.

Like I mentioned above, how long before the amendment comes out.

Why practice on them if you're not racing them?

I think it's a good idea. I've always thought a 125 was a great bike for kids coming off 85's.
But the problem I see is availability of 125's. I wish Honda, Kawi and Suzuki would get off their asses and realize we need 125's to keep the sport healthy.

My brother is a Kawi, Suzuki, Polaris dealer here in Indiana. Last year he took on TM just to have a 2 stroke option for his customers. Before he took them on he lost a couple of good customers to KTM because the were making the switch from a 4 to 2 stroke and he didn't have any.

He sold a couple. Cool bikes for sure. He has a rider racing a TM 125, and doing very well on it. But they're a bit pricey.
He'd love to have Japanese 125's if Kawi and Suzuki made them.

MX world gets excited for return of the 125 class.

Honda introduces 185cc 4t.

I undestand what's being done. But, for the kid who is 12, weighs 190+, is 6', has been riding big bikes for a while now, it just doesnt 'fit' him. But, I understand what they are trying to do. It really comes down to size mostly, then experience too. Some kids at 16 are still not ready for a big bike, size wise.
That kid's on roids.

The name of the stock class was changed to limited. The rules didn't change, just the name. It made more sense to call it limited because it wasn't really stock.

The rules have definitely changed A LOT over the last say 5-7 years (you know the timespan better than me)

Now you can practically run everything but a kit or motor mods

Here's what I don't get. Everyone knows that kids grow at different rates, so why not make it a size requirement rather than an age requirement. "you must be this tall to ride" type of thing. Idk, if you ask me I think thats the better route

You are right about that though I do thing the stock class rule changes that happened 6 or 7 years ago were a good thing. I know you were at races where people were protested for textured graphics and broken petcock levers and just stupid stuff. The old rules had a list of things that were ok to change, and nothing else was ok. That let to stupid protests about grip tape, foam around brake pedals etc. It also didn't allow any suspension valving changes which was crazy. The changes 6 or 7 years ago made a list of what you can't change, and everything else was fair game. The list includes internal engine mods, pipe, carb, airbox, frame, swingarm, shock etc.

Finally, other than the 50cc classes, non of the other classes are stock/limited at any race except for some majors and Lorettas. Most of them use the AMA limited class rules for their stock classes but not all of them For example, Mammoth runs a 61cc mod 50 class under supplemental rules and that class is nowhere in the AMA rule book.

I can tell you one thing, as an event official the old rules really sucked to enforce.

It is less a size thing and more of a maturity thing. I was in the meeting where this was passed and most thought that the rule needed to be made for the masses, not the exceptions. All of the OEMs were in favor of the proposal and I think it passed with no opposition.

Also, the bigger kids don't have to ride 85s, the 125 is a perfect transition bike for bigger kids.

Oh I know you had a tough job, anyone dealing with overzealous mini parents has their work cut out for them.

I guess as a racer (on mini bikes mostly) I just liked having the oppurtunity to race with everyone on an even playing field.

I don't know everything about what is or isn't allowed anymore, im sure it's still relatively even, I guess I'm just a bit of a purist who enjoyed having a true stock and mod classes.

Tyler bowers is an exception.

I can remember being in staging next to him in the school boy class at lake Whitney, he was maybe 13 with a full blown beard....not a 5 o'clock shadow, not thin mustache, a full blown beard. I was initiated not by his riding ability, but purely his looks Grinning

If the rules are changing, you have to go with the majority, not the 1 in 10,000

For oversized kids they should look at RPV, experience and have them submit a video to the AMA of them riding/ racing. Then ama can determine if they can be an exception to the rule....

Kinda like a TUE.

You might have what 2 kids a year like that ?

Travis Pastrana

Ronny Lechien

Travis Preston

All 125cc champs and bigger than you described.

Now they just need to go a step further and make amateur racing all two strokes and the entry pro class as well, then make the premier class 250cc four strokes... then we can watch the best racing, not to mention the most industry-wide financially sensible and easily marketed model.
this

the new rules do not fit all riders.

What is it with people in 2015 immediately grasping for exceptions the moment they see a rule? That mentality is why we have trannies trying to scam LL titles in this sport now.

My friend's son is 12, 6'0" and weighs 205. Yeah, he plays football, but he likes to ride too.

This is going to sound harsh, but oh well. The kid can loose some weight! You change the rules for the masses not the exceptions.
a voice of reason and the exact reason the AMA made the rule, for the safety of the masses and not the very small number of exceptions. I overly support this new change and applaud the AMA for finally stepping in and trying to do something within the industry for good!
