I don't think it has much to do with the kidney's. Mine is soft on the front, but has protection on the back. It is really a back support as far as I am concerned. Just like the guys at lowes wear that do a lot of lifting. I guess is does also fill the area below chest protector and back should someone land on you.......

Can't be bad.....I guess it just became UNCOOL.....Kinda like riding your bicycle to high school......

ditto. I stopped this year when my velcro had become to worn out from being stretched so hard. I figured out without it that was extra room to get my pants buttoned too. I rode a couple times without it and just kept on and haven't bought another one.
Same for me, I would still wear one if my fat didn't over lap

After having back surgery last winter I wear one all the time now for support. I go with the most ventilated one with least amount of bs on it but for before and after surgery my doctor gave me a medical back brace/kidney belt to ease pain, it worked so I transferred it to riding. Doesn't hurt to wear it.

by back hurts if I do not wear mine. If I tweak my back doing something else I will put on my kidney belt for back support.

Would make an interesting to see the statistiks on what % of vet riders have a kidney belt on the starting line.

Like the guys that wear one, I do it because my low back kills with out it. I'm almost 40, must be a vet thing.

My lower back would always get tight during off-road races or track that required standing up more. I quit using them but they always helped more than annoyed me.

I love the beer belly comments. Im 34 and the spare tyre is not visible yet...but I know it's gonna come sooner or later...

I've always ridden with one, and am starting to consider it for skiing (along with knee braces). I only ride about 3-6 times a year...but I've always skied, so I know what I'm talking about when it comes to constant impact on the back in back country skiing.

Regarding the comment on neck braces...what is an 'old' generation neck brace...I bought the atlas neck brace....cause I saw a pic of RV Blush Am I vulnerable to break a collar bone at tip over speed?

You beat me to it. That's all my dad will wear.

Back in the 80's he was having "lower back pain" issues so he went to the doctor. They told him to piss in a cup for testing. Come to find out there were white blood cells in his urine. The doctor asked what he did over the last couple of days to which he answered he raced his dirt bike. That's when the doctor told him to get a kidney belt ride and then come back. He bought a kidney belt, raced and then went back to the doctor for a follow up and no more white blood cells in his urine. He won't ride without a kidney belt. I ride with one as well while growing up but stopped a few years ago as I outgrew the one I had but since I just had back surgery in July due to a work related injury it is time for me to get myself a new kidney belt(kevco stubbs). I'm 25 but I don't care about the "cool factor" of not wearing one anymore. It's much more beneficial to wear it than it is to look cool.

I've never been able to wear them. They were so damn uncomfortable and it's all I'd think about during a race if I had one on. My dad would get so angry with me because I wouldn't wear it. I remember my old man having a magenta AXO one he wore for years.

The only brace I ever heard of that people were breaking collarbones with was the Leatt. I personally really liked the Omega neck brace. I had a crash wearing my Leatt where I went face first into the ground and the brace came up and into my throat. Knocked the wind out of me pretty good. Had I been going fast at the time I feel it would have been way worse than just knocking the wind out of me. Needless to say I stopped wearing it right away. I have a buddy who cracked his sternum wearing a Leatt. I was lucky enough to work at a shop and know one of the guys at omega and he gave me an omega brace to try out.

I have always wore one, I feel weird riding without it. Say what you want but I got tangled up in a 1st turn wreck once and landed on someones bike and after that race I noticed a nice gouge in the kidney belt. I can only imagine how that would have felt if I didn't have it.
^^This. I won't ride without one, the more plastic the better. Dress for the crash not the ride. A footpeg in the kidney seems all too easy. I put it on loose, not looking for support.

I remember not wearing one for a weekend when I was on 80's. My kidneys hurt like hell for the next week. Never went without again. These, of worn properly, are not a hindrance and they hold your insides in place.

I watched a guy at the local sand pit launch his KX 500 over a berm into the woods and all he had on was Jean shorts and a kidney belt ,he came out in one piece, thank god he was wearing his kidney belt.

Some say they ain't for protection. Let me tell ya, you zapp your tail bone one good time and you'll be looking for leftover 1990's AXO or Fox kidney belts with the thick foam and big chunky plastic protector built in the back.

RV would be the world champ right now if he had one !!!!! Angry

I ride in Caineville where there are a lot of rain ruts. After a couple days of riding, my lower back begins to hurt from crossing all the rain ruts. I just get a sharp jolt of pain over every bump. My solution has been to put on a kidney belt. I was amazed the first time I put one on and immediately the pain went away. I still only put it on after the pain comes because I find them a little uncomfortable.
I have always worn one because without it my kidneys hurt like hell.

I seriously doubt that a kidney belt would have done much in his loop out crash. I think a lot of riders dont wear them now because of the better suspensions, comfort and focusing more on core training.

Was waxing nostalgia and then focused on Wardy's kidney belt.
That was the worst piece of gear ever produced in the world™. Jammed down our throats and protected nothing.

It was like yo, moto aint hard enough, here is a gigantic piece of velcro with our logo on the back side that doesn't do shit. Also it makes you feel uncomfortable as hell.

YOU NEED THIS

God dam it.....people like you make me embarrassed to be a MX'er! I wish we could do a class action suit against all uneducated vital members.....but then GuyB and Scottie would lose all their business.

edit....and then you follow it up with a that-was-sarcasm post....WTF? I'll stick with my comment above.

GuyB always the voice of reason.

Bikes in the early 70's had only 4 inches of rear travel and 32' seat height so it made the transition from seated to standing more difficult than later on with long travel so you were on the seat more back then.

More seat time + short travel = blowed out kidneys and such. And that brings you to kidney belts.

I have a 1974 Suzuki TM400 Cyclone for you to ride for anyone who has doubts.
I'm going to pretend to disagree so I can take that TM400 for a spin.

MXA just recently had an article on the benefits of wearing a kidney belt in their mag.

Funnily enough, I just searched their website and it looks like the recent article was recycled from one originally written in 2006.

Anyway, here it is (not sure why the formatting is all wonky):

I'm talking about the kind that have some serious padding and tailbone protection on the back. Not the ones that are stretchy material only like the Gold Belt. It's pretty obvious something like this might have been beneficial to RV's tailbone in his accident. as for the championship, that's less certain, maybe like 98%.

When bikes had 4" of rear travel they made us piss blood if we didn't wear belts.

Ten years ago one kept me from getting an exhaust burn in first turn pile up. Melted the jersey and part of the belt.
