Not taking sides here, but why should Josh get to use a number he never earned? Why would he brand his team that after being told he could not "squat" on that number, and then be assigned a number (just like everyone else who has never finished in the top ten in final season points or won a title) just like all of the other riders according to the points they earned the previous season?

We have long had a system here to allow permanent numbers for the bigger stars, and it worked well for RC, Reed, Stewart, Pastrana, RV, Alessi, etc. The numbers 100-115 were always held for other visiting GP riders or returning champions (remember Reed's first number being #103? Townley's and O'Mara being #101? Healey and Lechien and Kiedrowski and Brown and Dobb all being #100?) It has nothing to do with "politics," it's simply the policy... Someone let Hansen choose #100 for a season and he just kept requesting it, which is fine. But now the AMA is better enforcing it's own rules and he earned #57, not #100.

I understand that Josh is bummed, but moving to the UK series because you can't wear #100 seems a bit much. What is Tommy Searle shows up and wants to wear his #100?

Josh should keep racing here, call his team #100, but race the number he earned, which was properly assigned. But if he's getting paid better to race in the UK, then by all means go, but blaming the number change doesn't make sense... Either way, I imagine he's going to be the favorite over there. He still flies.

DC,

I agree for the most part on JH racing the number that was given to him. But why are we rewarding points to a Regional sx series in the 1st place ? If we are going to reward riders points for 250 SX then make it a national series for the larger teams and have a regional West/East series with no points. Trust me I'm not a big fan of Hansen and if he would have just said I'm doing it for the money cool. Believe me the way he is going about it nobody is going to miss a 31 year old rider riding West coast only.

I agree 100% with Hanny, and I'm actually trying to start a union at MY workplace. I'm not really that great of an employee and rarely put much effort into my work. But I feel like I should be making much more money and have more say in how the business is run. It's just not fair.

@mb60, the AMA decided to recognize the points in 250 SX even though it's not a "national" series because they are equal (EDIT) chances (East and West) to score points, and they wanted to reflect a rider's success in that class as part of the overall picture.

But I disagree on a national series where kids (and a few men) would race all 17 rounds. It's tough to learn SX racing and the attrition rate can be a sobering number. Also, if you narrow it down to one series, you cut half the jobs for riders, mechanics, etc. The system works well now, in my opinion, and the racing in that class adds a great deal to the evening shows, and it also pushes riders up in the premier class in a fair manner (not just an arbitrary age restriction). It would be cool to see everyone together every weekend, but why would, say, Mitch hire five riders and five mechanics for one SX series? I am afraid that while it would be cool to see all of the 250 riders line up every weekend, the number of jobs it would cost and the number of injuries we might see from young riders just learning the craft would not be worth it.

I think this is a smart way for him to protect his brand. Make it look like some sort of rebellion, when most likely nobody will pay him to race here so he's off to a fledgling AX series across the pond.

I'm not a huge fan of Reed, and it's not about being buddies with everybody...but he's won a few championships and knows pretty much everybody. He's also pretty charismatic, and also has enough self-control to not speak ALL that's on his mind when it would do more harm than good. All those things would be advantageous in getting something to happen.

Leverage?

A riders Union should be about the riders being a partner and having true disclosure of the real numbers.

Right now the way moto works, the riders feel as if they are not really part of the plan and are usually told that there's no money in Moro, what your getting is a nice gift from us, be happy with that! (That may be true but they don't don't know for sure)

Its none of the riders business what the real numbers are and they are not partners. They dont like it they can go ride another series but it does not seem there is a shortage of riders whining about a union except for guys on the down side of their career who cant get a good ride so they want to start their own deal. There is nothing stopping any of these guys from doing their own thing but in the USA I thing the riders are taken pretty good care of both in the SX and MX series.

I hear you on that. Very true . . .

So did jh100 just pick the wrong number to squat on??? I mean what if Adam Enticknap earns a top 100 number, will he be forced off the 722 that he has built his whole self promotion around??? If so, we need to find out a way to fix this problem

At least this IG post is better than the picture of RC slamming someone and Hanny asking why certain riders gets away with dirty riding while he is getting punished. Grinning

Yes, Adam would have to use the two-digit number he earns as soon as he earns it. It's been that way for a few years now. And champions have to wear #1 when they defending a title, no matter what their permanent number.

The only permanent three-digit numbers left are #377 and #800. They were grandfathered in when the change was made and Christophe and Mike continue to use those numbers.

this summer Sean Collier raced with #207 when he was assigned #96 and Tommy Weeck raced with #331 when he was assigned #81

Travis Pastrana didn't get to keep his 199? I'm outraged. Wink

The only leverage would be a majority of riders in a union, to sit down as 1 entity.

Probably 1, 1, and 1.

I like Josh, but he makes too big a deal about "politics."

I think at one point he believed he had to do an anger management course before he could race again, and blamed "politics." (There was never any such demand.)

That's probably a good place for him to race and be competitive. Doing the 250 class as a solo rider here is going up against some seriously heavy hitters. But I also wouldn't expect the UK series to be a cakewalk for him.

I get why he wants 100 as a "brand," but this ain't NASCAR.

Yeah, you'd think, wouldn't you? But apparently they're not/weren't

I just don't get the number/branding deal. I know who Josh Hansen is, but that's because I know who he is, and who his dad was, and what tricks he's got up to over the years. I don't know him any better because he's number 100. To be honest, if you'd have asked me what number he raced before this thread I probably wouldn't have been able to tell you without checking. To me, he's 'Josh Hansen', not '#100'.

If you're a fan of Hansen (or whoever) then you're a fan. If you're not, then I don't see how making a connection to a number will make any difference.

I'm not going to forget Hansen if he's another number, like I'm not going to forget who Pastrana is if he switched to something else

That is where you are wrong, the riders are NOT a partner. You think riders are entitled to see how the promoters are spending the money and how much they make. They are not employed by the promoters and are free to go race anyplace they would like. There are a lot of really talented riders making a lot of money to race. Just because someone puts their heart and sole into racing does not mean they are good enough to make a living doing it. There is no way a riders union will work because you will always have riders like Jeff Emig who will line up "and get their first SX win" when most all the top riders agreed to not race like in Vegas. So you can keep up your little fantasy about a riders union. Laughing Laughing Laughing but I am sure you believe in Santa Clause and Unicorns too.

A couple of people have made the number/branding thing work, I think of Reed with twotwo, Stewart with Seven and Pastrana with 199. But the thing is they were all brilliant before they tried to brand themselves as anything, they gained fans all over the world and a huge following over almost a decade of being successful and winning championships. Hansen has been on the periphery of the sport for the past 3/4 years, I can't remember the last time he won a race, maybe 2011, he's not really in a great position to try and turn himself into a brand. It seems to me that he's not really that bothered about racing, which is fair enough, but I have to wonder what his motivation is, it can't be money, because, I don't know how much he's getting paid to race over here, but he surely cannot be making the same amount of money he'll make from racing Supercross in America

Yeah, i know what you mean, to be honest , he is as relevant as J-Law, and i cant remember what number he rode, nor do i care.

But, i do think career numbers for those that have earned them are not a bad idea. Word there is 'earned'.

First, I am a hanny fan and don't care what his number is even though I think the number is cool. I liked the way it looked when Button had it on the PJ1 bike. One thing lil hanny is failing to realize is that if he is not a part of the circus/politics there is no "branding" needed. Don't bite the hand that feeds you in other words. You have to be part of it to be relevant per say. Don't blame the circus or politics because you chose the wrong thing to "brand"...

I'm actually with the establishment (Gibberson and Coombs) on this one. Making a mountain out of a molehill. Keep your hunnit brand, put 57 on your plate and race your dirtbike.

Josh needs to do whatever pays the bills. He is not getting any younger and now has a family to support.
12/7/2015 4:52pm
It's easy to see both sides here. I can tell you straight up that Josh is extremely passionate about his number, a lot of athletes are. Elway never would have played without the number 7 and Dale Earnhardt wouldn't without the 3. He's building his brand behind it and he stands behind his brand.

Regardless of his age and where his career is at this point he has to think about the future - and the future isn't racing, it's his brand. I'm guessing the promoters for the AX series will pay him more just to show up and race than he would in purse money standing on top of the podium. It's a no brainer for him. He has his family and brand to think about...

I don't think of or associate Josh Hansen when I see the number 100 but when I see a pair of spiderman PJs that is who I think of.Pinch
