Interesting that Nicoletti and Martin both had doctor friends paying for a lot of their stuff.

Why were the engines going bang so often?
It's not hard to make a high HP, potential grenade motor.

It's hard to make a high HP 250F motor that can last the riggers of pro MX.

Look at the recent string of problems Pro Circuit has had with their motors. Years and years and rears of R&D and they still don't have a perfect solution.

Gotta love 4 stroke race motors!

PC lost just as many 2 stroke motors through the years, how many strokes makes no difference.

Also, PC's recent problems were electrical, not mechanical.

Great read. Crazy to hear about those guys doing it that tough. Being on the other side of the world, I always assumed Eleven-10, who were consistently getting good results, would be completely professional and had a budget to match. To find out the exact opposite is staggering.

Finally! I started that E10Mods thread back in Setember I believe? Matthes pulled through and got some answers.
So great,Thanks!

I thought about the Dr. thing too. I wonder if the Dr's do it as kind of long term investment. Keep the guy racing and he'll...

The Doctors probably we're already fixing them up and liked what they were doing and figured they could help out. Plus, it's probably a good tax write off for guys that draw that kind of money. Who knows?

That van did look cool, especially with that REC MX sticker!

Phil and Alex were cool too!

"We were all excited, and then reality sank in and we were like, “How are we supposed to get home?” hahahahhaha oh man...

I remember agreeing to a deal with Sanner in 2013 to race Atlanta Supercross on his Yamaha and if all went well, I would finish Supercross with the team... I showed up to Atlanta, called Sanner multiple times... He never showed up. So I sat in the stands and watched all day. Then next weekend PJ Larsen was on the team. Still haven't heard from Sanner since, and hope I never do.

Crazy reading that, definitely a good write up. I was always impressed with the E10 bikes, I remember them regularly getting good starts and putting in some rides but never expected the team to be run so poorly.

Makes AMart/Phil's current rides that much more respectable

Judging by the story, you're probably better off havin not gotten that ride.

So is E10 still in business? Sounds like the used FMF exhaust systems are sold out.
Not exactly what I wanted to hear when I first hashed up the E10 Mods thread a few months back. But as an adult you realize some people are just jacked up and they'll never change. Not that it matters now but it sounds like addiction problems. Hope Im wrong. Great read!

Sanner is still doing some powder coating and shit these days but I don't think anybody will trust him to hold anything too valuable. One of my best friends gave him a 250 and 450 last year for him to build and he never even did it. They got the bikes back in parts and unfinished. I think he is dealing with some legal trouble too but it might just be rumors from disgruntled customers Laughing

Thanks Steve, great read. I will say Sanner helped me out with a motor and did a heck of a good job so it wasn't all bad. Things don't always work out, but believe he had good intentions.

I remember the FIM telling KTM we are tearing down your 350s next weekend.

All legal...while yanking holies over 450s on the regular.

Good read! You gotta feel for all those guys. When I got to where Billy Hartle was sleeping in the Lobby asking if his credit got authorized yet it was like dang man that is brutal.

Matthes, You should write this as a movie script and sell it to Hollywood it would be a way better story than the remake of Point break. Cool

I lived in SoCal with Alex the winter of 09, both of us renting a room from a friend in Murrietta.
That was the year he was on Ti-lube and 450 part time. We'd drive to Alessi's sx track west of Victorville, because they would let him ride for free and the 2 sx tracks were really good!
Such a good kid and never says a bad thing.
Been friends for a while and he never talked bad of Chad or eleven10 even during the bad times.
So stoked for him now.
He had a great year this year at Rock River and now getting the Star ride I can't wait to see what he does with it.
I was doing media during all of those years and this story isn't news to anyone in the pits and seems exactly how I saw it and was hearing things each week.
I remember the meltdown at Millville and the box van didn't show and I recall that being the last event ever for them.
Chad was a great person and I knew him from way back. He raced a bit and then got in with YoT and other teams along the way before doing his own program.
I do remember asking Alex if he had any offers after the 12 season and he said "no, nobody has even said a word to me. what do I have to do to get a ride man?"
About the doctor comment from above... There is a doctor in Nebraska that helps Alex and a few others and is a super-fan and has a full on SX track at his place too. He doesn't support these kids to get more business! (smh)
Now about Chad, I still follow him on instagram and he does powder coating like someone above mentioned, but I can tell you, he hasn't shown his face at the races for several years now.
That's a bummer because I know he loved being there just as I, Matthes or any of you do, so I know it's got to be eating at him.
Great write up Steve!!
And I like the new page layout RX.
There are hundreds of these stories out there, getting them to print is another story.
Good job everyone.

I know its an interesting saga, but it's not exactly unprecedented in the pro pits. Unless you get Sanner's side of the story it reads mostly like a hit piece.

I can't see shit!

Anyone else having trouble reading it on an iPhone? I get the flash 11-10 banner and then a blue/black screen under it. Tried Safari and Chrome.

Anyone have a print friendly link or something that will work. Need to read!

Cheers

Hit piece? That's what you got from that story? I read it exactly as Matthes intended; a bunch of guys making the best of a less than ideal situation. Martin's and Phil's successes this year make it an even better story in my opinion.

Nice job, Matthes. With the exception of Eric Johnson*, very few moto journalists look for stories like this.

*Yes, I know EJ is a Monster guy, and mostly only covers Monster riders, but he still does really good stuff.

Well, it's the GPs - if it was under 450cc, there would be no problems . They could have had any combination of bore and stroke, below 450cc, inside the engine. KTM wouldn't have given a flying f**k about an FIM tear down. Really, do read the rules sometime.

Even in the US, unless it's been recently changed, a 350, in the Outdoors at least, could use an overbore , so long as it didn't go over 450cc, and the kit was commercially available. Stroke was / is the 'do not touch' side of things. I think SX is where you can't do anything (or little more than a poofteenth) to the bore of an engine - though I could be wrong.

A few times I spoke to Matthes on his program, a few seasons ago, and through Email / PMs, urging him to take up the long standing offer that KTM had for a "journalist" to witness a tear down of Cairoli's 350. I thought it would have made a good story / earner for him, to tie into one of his MXDN / Bercy / rare GP trips. Steve would regularly air his doubts about it really being a 350 - but, to hear AC revs the tits off the thing, I couldn't think it was a bigger engine.

I recently read a fictitious book but I'm wondering if there is any truth to one of the concepts in the book. Basically a lawyer sponsored an amateur fighter through his amateur ranks and owned 25% of his career earnings. I've never heard of this in mx, but then again sometimes things aren't always public info in mx. There's no chance that could be the case here is there? I did find the doc helping a bit odd but it could very easily be a nice guy helping out. And the level the doc was helping doesn't seem to be enough to warrant dibs on career earnings.
