Pretty interesting article on Racer X. What do you think? I know that many of the threads to do with riders on this site revolve around Reed or Stewart, peppered with some Roczen, Villopoto, Tomac, and Dungey posts but I'd have to say that even after a decade of these 2 dudes in the class (7 and 22) probably half the attention is on them. It seems to be changing with Roczen being slightly more outspoken and Dungey very lightly loosening the reins but if you ask anyone outside the sport they dont know who Jason Anderson or Blake Baggett is, they still mention Ricky, Pastrana, Stewart and Reed.

I think alot of it has to do with how smoothed over these new guys are, dont step on any toes, dont say the wrong things, dont be aggressive. Remember the days of Stewart messing with Reed in practice and them slowing down brake checking each other all day, taking each other high in corners, or J-law banging on the dog house. We need that fire to create superstars. Swimming and baseball and gymnastics thrive off public opinion and olympic medals. In a world of flat brims and energy drinks and lifted trucks we need to rubbing and battling and grabbing the other dude by the chinbar of their helmet after the race because they were bouncing off each other for 15 laps. You saw it with Tomac and Wilson in 250 and even Tomac and Roczen in 250s. The 450 class has always been a little cleaner racing with more separation but up front "settling for points" and "theres always next week" doesnt create hype, it doesnt create drama and it sure isnt gonna create a superstar. Even Dungey's outstanding season of 16/17 podiums he'll never be the most talked about rider with the most hype. I love Dungey out there winning but what we really need is Barcia/Tomac/Roczen battles every weekend fighting it out for the top step of the podium.

It has become pretty vanilla, Sponsors have dumbed their riders down just like the Frances did to the NASCAR drivers

Just wait. We are watching a sport wherein alpha dogs all compete for millions of dollars. Eventually there will be a heated rivalry that blows right up.

Battling on the track? For sure.

There you go we have entered the "reality show" generation. I do not need trash talking, riders fighting cussing on the podium. I need tracks that reward riders with the ability to do sections that no one else can do. The 250 riders should not be able to do all the obsticals on a SX track nor should any one but the top 3 or 4 450 riders. Easy tracks do not make better racing.

You can't manufacture dislike, I think most of these guys really respect one another. Just wait, there is one on the horizon who's going to be everyone's enemy.

Whenever Cooper Webb opens his mouth this place throws a hissy fit, so I'm not sure real "friction" would go over too well in this sport...

Yup and when you have someone who talks shit about one of the vitals most beloved, they get even more pissed off.

The sport can handle it, vital on the other hand can not.

I always kind of shake my head when people say "vital," like they're talking about the site. Maybe some site members can't handle it. There is a difference.

This is the society we live in nowadays...

For people in the public eye, if you say one wrong thing some jackass complainer makes a call and you lose your job, sponsorship, etc...

However, the "friction" is bound to happen on the track. It does every year, count on it.

The "sport" has just followed the PC bs in today's society, just like corporate America has done. Everything is vanilla today. Can't say of do shit anymore without having your face plastered on the news channel of social media. The media controls us now...

It really pisses me off when I go to The Old Spaghetti Factory and they bring me spumoni with mostly chocolate.

I say "listen here food serving dude, you better bring me some spumoni with more strawberry and pistachio or there's going to be some friction up in here!"

I think rivalries are good for the sport. Blatant takeouts are uneccessary in most cases, but a good block pass is nice to see every once in a while. I love watching Barcia or Anderson just throw it in there like a boss and not bother to tip toe around to not upset anyone. RC would block pass his own grandmother if it meant getting to the front quicker.

I am a pretty big Dungey fan, but the new "clean" racing trend is pretty boring. Although I gotta say that Dungey put on some passing clinics this year.

yeah I like a good handshake after a race but I loved this as I was a Reed fan and really didn't like Stewart but even now I've warmed to Stewart more I still love it haha not a backward step taken by either of them

A buddy and I were randomly talking about this today. There's definitely something different today than 10-20 years ago, and it's not in a better way from a spectators standpoint. Complacent comes to mind when watching most of todays races.

You want Friction, check out the Final World Speedway round that is currently on in Australia at the moment.

Aussie Wild Card Sam Master threw a nice right hook into one of Nikki Pedersen's mechanics and started a bit of an all in brawl.
