Like Davey Coombs put it in the RacerX commentary: "If anyone could completely walk away from motocross for good and never look back, it would be Ryan Villopoto."

What none of the opinions in this thread and most of all the others on the RV retirement fail to consider is this...RV doesn't have one single shit to give anymore. Period. He was over pro racing at the end of 2015...and wanted to walk away then, and never look back. He was forced to race by those who held him in contracts. Now that he can walk away...he doesn't give a damn how it looks to you, to me or to anybody else. You can cry and moan that he isn't going out like a champion all you want...but he doesn't care. He's gone, and that's all he cares about.
This pretty much sums it up!

As a 'proud American', I totally dig RV's exit from racing. No 'farewell tour', group hug hoopla. Just thank everybody and go to the house. Perfect.

Ok guys, you are the Americans (total respect to you, your Nation, your riders and your opinions) if you're happy with the way it went, well, good for you, but let me say if Cairoli would act like RV did I would be disappointed.

I'm not too happy with how it went down for all of us fans, but not too disappointed with him giving the Kawasaki the big ol' middle finger. Top riders have been shit on by Kawi before, about time someone left them a huge steamer.

Many here have stated that RV owes us nothing. We just have to come to the reality that we owe him even less.
Newman FTW!

RV must surely have the money to buy himself out of his contract? If he really really didn't want to race he could've done that. He wasn't forced to race, he just decided he would rather race than pay out, which is fair enough

So use his retirement money to buy himself out of his contract instead of putting in 9 more months of work for an enormous payday, contract fulfilled, and a clean break from the industry with a massive bank account. This is a test of your intelligence: what would you do?
For sure I would race. But he wasn't forced to race, he had another option if he was over that much, that's what I'm saying.

Harsh!

Was cool what JMB did, came, saw and conquered. I don't think his road racing exit was of King Kenny's level, ha.

And a racer should know, if your head isn't in it, you should not be racing.

His knee was wrecked for sure, but he just disappeared after winning the championship. Win a 500 title for American Honda on a works RC and then unplug the phone.

Lots of people on here must have missed their calling. They could have been life coaches. Public Relations gurus. Motocross racers.

some on here are just too sensitive for that, they get too emotionally involved with the riders actions, you know, like it actually affects their life in some way...

Yeah the translation kind of makes Bayle seems a little harsher then he said in French, but seriously if RV just doesn't want to race for his own health then who are we and who is Bayle to say that he should have?

the only thing that leaves me with a little bitter taste was that he apparently "half assed" the season which to me shows disrespect to everyone involved (my opinion nothing more nothing less)

Also if he didn't wanna race, was just seeing out his contract and couldn't give a shit about records or how he will be seen in future, then why did it take balls to do what he did?
just sayin

Having the money sounds easy, but it's a bit more than you may think.

Let's just say that his salary was around $1M a year (guesstimate). His "buyout" to not ride that last year may have been as much as 50% of his contract. So he could either fork over 500K to not ride, or get $1M to ride. That's a $1.5M swing in "income ", which is a huge amount of money in a sport like this.

RV has made a lot of money in his career, but don't think for a minute that he has every cent of it squirreled away under a mattress. Take 40% off the top right away for taxes and then factor in all the investments he's made (Baker, practice tracks, etc.) to help him be a champion and it's pretty easy to see how $1.5M is a huge amount of money even for the top guy in this sport.

These guys aren't as fortunate as ARod and friends.........

After all those years of Pure Dedication to Training...
And Winning.
And Crashing.
And Injuries.
And Surgery.
And Rehab.

And, then, after ALL OF THAT...you end up having to fulfill an "Extra Year" of a Contract that you thought was over...& during THAT YEAR...that Extra Year that ya really didn't want...

You get injured again?

All the while, ya just want to grab the wife, get in the Raptor...and drive to Tahoe...or get on your Harley and take her for a ride...to anywhere...no plans. No schedule to keep. No place you have to be...and no one or no thing that you "must" do...after 20 years of nothing but racing, racing, racing...& literally not much else...after all of that...

Well, If that's where your head was at?

You'd "retire", too.

I'm stoked for the guy.

Of course it would cost him to get out of it. But he had that option, he wasn't forced to race, if he was that over it that he just really really want to do it then he had that option. He chose to race, and he got paid well for it, I suspect it was quite a bit more than you are suggesting for this year too

When you think back to what happened when RV was signed to stay on the factory team, Kawasaki had to cut back loads of other stuff just to make the books balance .. took a lot of money out of the sport and put it in his pocket , i hope KRT have done everything they can to recoup what they paid.

maybe Kawi should had think twice ... by bringing a rider who wanted to retire to the Gp's. How stupid is that ...

And i don't think RV took lot of money out of the sport. Remember the PR's at the start of the season. RV coming to the Gp's was the biggest news ever.

My 2c

In hindsight I think he may be kicking himself that he didn't nut up and keep racing because the top guys have all been injured since. He probably would have clicked off wins by the end and won the title I think. Who knows what that injury really was? My friend broke his coccyx. He laid on his stomach for a week then raced in pain. He did it. There's no real confirmation about the vertebra damage but it could be legit of course. The secrecy doesn't help. Just sucks the last time we ever saw him race he was looping out landing on his ass. What a crap way to go out I think. It seems very strange and really shows he was mentally done before the season started to me. He hinted at trying again in 2016 too before the injury. You could see he was learning fast and frustrated he didn't go in 100% prepared. I think he'll always have regrets about that now.

Ya know, for guys who claim to love the sport, y'all sure seem to get more joy out of someone's shortcomings as opposed to enjoying the racing. Kinda weird

Im not on about coming to the GP's , im on about before that, RV's huge contract kicked the ass out of Kawasaki's budget in the US , i remember someone asking why there were very few privateers on Kawasaki , and a few of the guys said that RV sucked all the money out , and the contingency was all gone. Will search for the story.

He got hurt, badly.

If he hadn't gotten hurt he'd still be out there trying. What part of that is hard for you to understand?

Seriously, what the fuck is your problem?

So you're telling me it's RV's fault for getting paid? I must have missed the part where he kidnapped the Kawi execs, put a gun to their heads, and forced them to offer him a bunch of money. I swear dude, it was annoying at first, but now you're grasping for any reason to bad mouth him and it's just pathetic. Get over yourself.

It's not just RV , he is negative and bitter towards anything related to American motocross, yet he seemingly spends every waking moment posting here.
