That was sweet! Mine has been in for 13 years and I'm so scared about breaking my femur again with that in there.

It also feels like my femur wants to flex but the rod won't let it. Anybody else have that sensation? It hurts!

The rod that's in my femur for my hip replacement goes all the way down to my knee and breaking that femur is my worst fear while riding. As for the hammering the shit out of that thing......my femur split all the way down when they put the rod in my leg.
Those docs would have hammered a piston into the bore.

When I had my rod removed from my left femur, it was an outpatient deal back in 1987. Doubt they videotaped the Operating Room back then but would have loved to see my extraction on screen.

Woke up in recovery and asked my Ortho about how it went. He told me they yanked me all over the table trying to get it out and they finally succeeded. He was a big dude too. Showed me the slide hammer tool that threaded on to the top of the rod that they used to remove it with. The rod has multiple sharp barbs at each end to imbed into the bone.

Had about 5 or 6 staples in me where they went in to get it, but the worst part was the next day I was bruised all over the place! Up and down my leg, my left arm and my back. Based on the MMA types of bruises on me, Doc wasn't lying when he told me what it took to get that bastard out!

I used it to make a lamp for a few years and everybody that saw it was like, WTF is that thing? Took the lamp apart and now the rod sits in a box in the basement.

I should get it back out for old time's sake......Good Times.

Is that the normal procedure for removing a rod? Blink
That one appeared a little stuck in there but the shit is rough work. I observed them removing a broken total hip replacement one time. That OR looking like a scene from one of my all nighters removing broken bolts in cars. Every tool you have has been pulled out and the place was a mess with like 6-7 different guys trying to do it and it took like 9 hours. Hell just total knees have a lot of beating and banging going on. And patients be like I could never have imagined it would hurt this bad. I'm like if you saw all the beating and banging that goes on you would know damn well it was gonna hurt like this..

Someone is gonna feel very shitty when they wake up.....

I saw some video of them inserting the rod in my fib. I told the doc that I had all the tools to do that procedure in my garage.

He did not think it was funny.

That's nothing. Some of those guys beat the shit out of you! (They have to though) Thank God for anesthesia.

You should see laparoscopic surgeries. Minimally invasive my ass. They about rip you off the table with the force it takes to ptt whatever it is theyre pulling out of you. But again thank god for propofol and fentanyl.

My wrist is currently under my leg. I watched the whole thing with my hand covering my eyes. It's funny the things we are scared of as adults.

I wonder how much that surgical hammer costs?
Probably an arm and a leg....

During my first hip replacement surgery I have a memory of being cold, laying on my side on the table and hearing a loud "Tink tink tink" noise and thinking oh fuck I'm waking up, shit shit, shit shit shit this is not good, and then a panicked feeling that I have to let them know. Then I sensed some commotion around me, then back to nothing. I know I was starting to come around and they had to up the ante on the knockout juice. That was the one they screwed up on and wound up getting yanked out 5 years later, The surgery took longer than expected and I was starting to wake up before they were done. That noise in that video made the hair on my neck stand up, oooohh I just quivered thinking about it lol.

I've watched a few videos like that because I was curious, lots of hammering and jiggling meat.
Glad they finally got it out of there for you. That video didn't make them look too professional, I don't swing a hammer that wildly even if I'm just busting out concrete

As an owner of a 14" titanium nail in my left femur - that is a wicked video. The docs told me installing one is just about like that - they get pretty tough on it.

Between the shattered femur and the surgery to fixate it - my leg looked like one massive bruise.

Hmmm.. I'm wondering what the clearance is. .004" for a Forged Wiseco Rod or .002" for a Cast rod ?

Georgie and I were just talking about these surgeons at Sunday's race. My first rod was installed in 2000 but my femur shattered and the bones never healed properly. Four separate surgeries later they removed the original rod, drilled through my hip and installed a larger diameter rod in 2004. Now I'm feeling some discomfort but after seeing this video, I'll pass!

upon rewatching it was yours bent?
Seriously, Why aren't they using a slide hammer?
If it were me, I would have made one and brought it with me.

Here, use this! You can keep it!

I have a stainless rod running the length of my femur its staying in .The Doc who put it in is a gear head and built his own blown olsmobile cutlass he also looks like he goes to the gym .I think there may be a day when it has to come out I noticed the rod is threaded I think im going to start working on a air hammer system to pull rods something a bit gentler .

I had that done to my tibia four years ago, felt about th same way as this video looks. I had kept the rod in for two and a half years, so it was stuck pretty good

I'm currently on an ortho floor but I've been considering a move to the O.R. Some of that shit they do is cool. Like some of you have said, the Dr's are for the most part not to sharp on shit like this. I've been in the operating room and watching them struggle with shit and I want to tell them to get out of the way and let me fix that shit for you. They are finicky about someone fucking up their sterile field but when something goes wrong they go in and out of it but you best not get close to it. Dr's and their tools are sometimes worth a good laugh.
