(I was there. And I was his teammate the year before btw)
And Johnny didn't race Thorpe twice, just the once.
But, it's been known to those with a bit of MX historical knowledge for decades now. I think it was also covered in 'The Professor' Bailey's DVD , "The Dream Team", on the 86 MXDN. David Bailey himself, in that video, and many subsequent interviews, has shown nothing but respect towards Dave Thorpe. The year previously, Thorpe had dominated the MXDN, yet, few US fan bois know that, or would want to know that. The US Team of Bailey, Lechien and Ward (that's a hell of a line up!), won, but as people are focusing on Omara's result the year after, I'll focus on Thorpe's result the year before. It's only fair......
Here's a picture of Thorpe, monstering Ron Lechien... I've seen this same picture, used by people as if Lechien was passing / beating Thorpe in a moto : No, just various people fevered imaginations. With all classes in each race, that year was very hard on 125 riders - 62 riders in each moto, apparently. Aye Carumbah!
Thorpe went 1/ 2/ 1 in the three motos, being only beaten by Kees Van Der Ven in the second moto In front of every US rider. But, hell, I expect to see blokes writing that they did not try.........
Here's a link to a RacerX story written by Rob Andrews, Britain's 125 rider for that year (and that's a unique story in and of itself) who is a poster on this site:

It's selective memory syndrome. Earlier in this thread, a few 'Fan Bois' seemed to put forward RVs win in the final moto of the 2011 MXDN in France to put shit on other riders.. When a few others pointed out he'd been beaten by Paulin, and Herlings (in his first International, on a 350 with the gearbox stuck in one gear, plus, I think another rider) in the previous moto, a few US fan bois got all upset about being reminded of that fact - yet, their referencing RVs last moto win was A OK.
It's just endless Bull Shit, from a fair few. It's pathetic.
It hould be a great year of World Championship Motocross.
Whoever comes out on top.
I just hope for injuries not to be a major determining factor - but, they usually are . I honestly can't see Cairoli getting through the full year, (jeezus AC, get a better knee brace sponsor, front exit, predominantly muscle holding knee braces are crap!) what with the way he's been repeatedly damaging his knees.over the last few years. I hope not, as I truly believe he is the World.s best Motocrosser, currently. Oh, and SX, is not Motocross. It's a hell of a show, but it's not a patch on real Motocross. It's America's contribution to Motorcycling, and I quite like it, to a certain extent. I await the squealing that my comments may/ will cause coming from 'The Butt Hurt"...... and the "making excuses" crap......... they should be good for a chuckle, or two.
