Shit is expensive but it REALLY varies depending on where you end up. For example, in my area in San Diego a 2 bedroom townhouse is 2,000/mo, if you drive out to east county 15-25 minutes you can rent a full house for 1500-2500.

Anywhere around Sacramento. MX: Prarie City, Sac Raceway(little Fri night races), 3 tracks in Marysville, Argyle in Dixon all within an hour. Trail riding, tons in almost every direction. Mountain Bike: Tons in every direction including ski area with lifts all under 2. BMX Roseville(Sacramento) which had the Nor Cal ABA national for years, Chico which has it next year, and Manteca both an hour and some change away and both national quality tracks as is Roseville. A little under 2 hours to the beach, same for the ski areas. And if you need to get shot Modesto is a little over an hour away, but you can actually stop in Stockton for that.
Ha Ha! How true.

I know you're really looking into CA, but I highly suggest you look at Northern NV as well. There aren't as many tracks as before, but the trail riding is literally endless. No state income tax in NV, and we are about to get a big surge of jobs with Tesla and a few other companies coming to the area outside of Reno. Cost of living is way lower compared to CA and if you like winter sports then Lake Tahoe is right here.

If you're dead set on CA then I would look around Sacramento area as others have suggested.

where would the best place to move to so I can ride tracks, trails , race bmx, ride mountain bikes, be in an area with decent rent/housing cost.
Close enough to decent jobs etc etc.

I was looking to fly out and check out areas so me and the family can be close to as much riding opportunities as possible.

Is Modesto a decent area?
I would highly recommend Temecula.

From my front door I am within an hour of Glen Helen, milestone, perris, elsinore, Cahuilla, and the ranch ( 3 of those are within 20 minutes). You've got Beaumont, ocotillo, and glamis ( hate that place) within 2 hours. The beach is 30-40 minutes away depending on traffic, the mountains for snowboarding are 2 hours away, and you can be sitting at the black jack table at Cesar's in Vegas within 4 hours.

The crime is extremely low, the town is gorgeous, and you can get a 3 bed 3 bath 2000 SQFT home in the 1600 a month price range. Very young family friendly.

All I can say is that I moved to Temecula about 6 months ago with my wife and daughter from Palm Desert and I will NEVER move. I love the people, the riding, the weather, everything is spot on.

Best of luck to you on your move, regardless of where you plant your stakes.

Lived in Ca for 50 plus years, not many legal trails left in the socal area. Also Utah has lots of trails and a low cost of living.
Check out health, auto and home insurance rates in Ca. 2/3 less up here. We can ride year round in the Boise area. Desert in the winter and high mtns in the summer.

No retirement for me, self employed, independent shop servicing BMW's KTM's and sell Ohlins. Also running for state
representative. Lots of opportunittes , you just have to create them.

Saint George, Utah... World class mountain biking, year round riding, Saint George and Mesquite motocross tracks, good golf, good rock climbing, etc. Sand dunes, Lake Powell, Moab, and Vegas relatively close. 5 national parks within a few hours. Ski Resort within 1 hour in the winter. If you need to hit some other tracks or relax on the beach, it's a 6 hour drive to LA.

That dumpy school by Atherton really pulls the property values down. Come to think of it my sister went there ... huh .......

Have you looked at Southern Oregon (Grant's Pass, Medford, Ashland)? I just moved here 9 months ago and love it. Income Tax is high but there is no tax on consumer goods. There are 3 BMX tracks, awesome MTB riding and shuttle riding, there are a couple MX tracks but mostly off-road, lots of wineries and a few breweries, great weather, snow skiing on Mt. Ashland, salmon/steelhead/trout fishing everywhere, hiking, hunting...the list goes on. There is not as much crap as there is in California, there are not 5 major shopping centers withing 10 miles and it's less crowded. Portland is 5 hours away and San Francisco is probably 7 hours and the beach is 3 hours. Housing is really affordable and you can find any range of houses with or without land.

I grew up and lived in SoCal for 30+ years in Orange County. I'm over that place. It's way too expensive and easy to get trapped into having too much and trying too hard to keep up. It seems everyone is a millionare down there and they turn their nose up at you if you are not.

I hated the traffic so much in and around Temecula. It was such a pretty area, but I'd go insane having to deal with that traffic every day!

Think carefully and critically before pulling the trigger on a move to "Kalifornia, USSA."
Envision what the future will look like in 10 years, and then apply it to what you see here now. Talk to locals---especially natives.
I speak from experience....I'm still here, but----
Good luck with your decision.

Indiana; the not so good.

Crime is climbing bad
police are everywhere 5 mph over and your getting a ticket
water bills 100 bucks
gas 3.00 a gal right now
rent 1000.00 a month 3 br 1000sqft
bmx racing very small turnouts and 8 month season
indoor tracks 2/3 hr drive
mx tracks 2/3 hr drive odd hours
4 months of winter
road construction never ends in every major hiway for no reason
Be careful what you wish for. I have lived in Anaheim CA, Charlotte NC, Cartersville GA, and brownsburg IN. No matter where I lived I still rode Mx the same amount. Once or twice a month. California was hectic and expensive. There was some cool bars and clubs (I was 25 at the time) and things to do, but it wasn't all that great. What you see on tv comes with a lot of money to blow. If you want somewhere warm to live I recommend Florida. Then when summer comes around you will hate it because you want to ride and it's 98*. Honestly of all the places I lived, I like Indiana. Carmel is a great town. No crime and plenty to do. Plus wildcat creek Mx is a great track. One of my favorites.

So true. I don't think that there is any traffic coordination in all of Temecula. It takes 25 minutes to get to the freeway most mornings.

SOCAL..no doubt...it's got everything you could ever imagine. Higher cost of living, and it's worth it.

I live and work in Ventura and I love it here. I never hit any traffic and everyone just drives past here cause they are heading to LA or the other way to Santa Barbara. Housing is somewhat reasonable still and most of the socal tracks are with in 2 hours. Piru is 30 minutes.

Plus when I get done riding I can go home for a sunset surf session.

Unless the dirt in your area is pure shale and gravel, dont move to California.

The dirt is terrible here.

You guys are both right in that aspect. Its a trip though, I will go on a late night food run and be to the restaurant and back to the house in under 20 minutes, but when I do it in the day it takes almost an hour!

I live with the traffic to know my family lives in a safe, clean, and beautiful town though
