Been going for more than 30 years now. The only thing that has kept me away from a bike (temporarily) is plaster and Iraq !

I'm currently on my 4th time. However now it is due to the lack of riding areas and lack of funds. I've got a 110 with some mods, but thats it. I've never been without a bike this long before and i get the hunger to ride every time I come on this website and see some pics of you guys riding. It really makes me sick. No riding spots within 2 hours of my house now. I used to have 3 within 30 minutes. With the price of gas, it's just not feasable anymore. I'm trying to save up slowly and hoping a track will open up soon. Until then I guess i will just stay jealous of all you guys out there rippin every weekend.

I’ve taken breaks from racing, but will always ride a m/c, doesn’t matter what kind or what type of riding I do. If it has an engine, I’m happy. I’ve also found doing different types of riding, even jet-skiing keeps moto fresh for me. I can’t imagine riding all yr long yr after yr—no wonder so many people get burned out and quit.

I've taken about 4 breaks in 33+years riding. There is nothing like it.

This may have been asked before, but how many times have you guys quit and come back? I've been wadded-up so many times, taken a break and returned its stupid. I'm currently bikeless (except for my street bike). I'll return as soon as my broken hand heals.

I broke my back at the end of last year. I keep thinking I might be able to ride soon when I have a decent day and then I have set backs with pain and mobility. I am improving and even surfed all day recently in some pretty big waves. It was the first thing I had done in 9 months and I was worried that I would not be able to handle it. I took it easy at first but the waves were so perfect that I was unable to hold back for long and was pushing it pretty hard and also getting pounded a few times pretty well that instantly had me thinking "if I can handle this maybe i can ride a little soon" Surprisingly I was not to sore after that and was feeling great but I started back to my normal routine and catching back up on our properties maintenance and somehow tweaked my back a bit again and it is not feeling to stable and the pain has come back a ton. I have been riding weekly for ever and pretty much thought I would be riding like that forever. This injury is testing me big time. I love to ride and it has been part of my life from the beginning. It is hard to fathom not being able to ride.

Quit?

If I quit and actually stayed away then I would have accomplished the task but if I were a quitter, I'd quit on quitting and be back. So yes I am a quitter and I'm back deeper than ever.

I quit this year. If i were to get hurt and not be able to work i would have a starving wife and 3 year old. Plus we would probably end up in a cardboard box because nobody to pay the mortgage...

I still do follow the sport. Just no time to ride with her taking 17 credit hours, I am taking 6 credits and 10 hour days at work...

I haven't read all the responses but....never.

I started riding at 4 in '77. In '85ish my dad got me into racing when he and my mother divorced. Something to spend time together on. Plus, I rode ALL the time. I raced up until '91 or so when I graduated high school. I didn't race for a while so I could finish college but I never quit.

In '98 after I had graduated and worked a few years to buy my own place and bikes I started back racing regularly. I've been at Alabama Series races since. I've broken many bones and people keep saying you're too old for that aren't you? I'm only 35 and I feel like I ride better now than I ever have.

Started riding at 7 years old, started racing in 1981 at 11, did it pretty seriously until college. Unfortunately my sponsor walked and I was footing my own education so it took a backseat for several years....Never quit....I thought about riding everyday.
Growing up in Canada there was always some riding going on, but I started racing streetbikes when i moved to the city out of convienienc....and I had no place to ride MX.
Got back into MX heavy in 2003 and have not touched a street bike since...Cant imagine not riding MX... Even after a couple serious crashes i live to get on my bike.

I'm on a temporary leave of absence that I never thought would be this long.
Yesterday was the 1 year anniversary of my crash at E-Town practice track . If you saw me fall you would think I would have gotten up and finished the moto, a total fluke.

Don't we all pretty much quit every Sunday night ?.

We're broke, tired and sore...

Then, all week, riding is all we think of.

Never, ever - admit you quit riding or racing, or don't own a machine - just use this -

"I'm currently between bikes....."

Sounds lots better.

Great responses guys. Motocross gets in your blood and never leaves. From what I can see, this holds true with 99% of the riders here. Even when bad things happen, we keep coming back or change our minds somewhere down the road.

Hang in there dude, doing the right thing always pays off sooner or later.

Unfortunately the sport is becoming a rich mans sport, unlike its roots. I'm seeing more people leave because of the cost. A better thread topic might be “why would / did you stop riding / racing motocross“.

I would say, top three……

1. Injury
2. Cost
3. Lack of riding areas

I didnt know people actually rode on this forum. Huh I guess we learn new things everyday. But myself will never quit. No one really does they still think and dream about it everyday.
