Sleeper Picks

Edited Date/Time 1/2/2014 12:18pm
I'm going with Josh Hill. He started off rocky last year but that heat race win showed me he still has the speed. He has had a completely healthy year and unlike all the other riders he has focused has on supercross (since he didn't race motocross and raced Australian sx). From the interviews he seems really positive and confident. Who are your guys' sleeper picks for this year?

Josh Hill isn't a bad pick. He told me recently that he feels like his old self again.

Hmm...what qualifies as a dark horse? Both Tomac and Roczen are rookies in the class, and Barcia proved last season that rookies can come in and win. They'd both qualify as a lighter shade of dark. Smile

Grant and Brayton would both be dark horse picks. Tickle told me that he hopes to be a top five guy with regularity. Weimer could also step up some in the standings this season.

Reed had a fairly tough year last year. It would be cool to see him return to his form from a coue years ago.

I think with the way the last few seasons went.....unless your name is RV , RD , Stewart or Millsaps.......I'd consider them some what a dark horse. And with Davi being out the first few rounds , that leaves three guys.

So many guys out there with SO MUCH talent though.......it's really hard to call. With all the guys you guys above me mentioned....it wouldn't surprise me at all to see them win 1 , 2 or maybe even more.

Never know........but that's why they race.

Oh yeah and happy new years dudes.

Can anyone on a factory bike REALLY be a sleeper pick? I suppose to win yes, but to top 5 or even podium a couple of times?

I guess with the field so deep with factory bikes and talent, it'll be tough for anyone to really become a solid sleeper pick unless we start seeing it as a success just for a privateer to get into the main events.

WP or Hill. Hill could possibly get a win if all te cards fall his way in te same night. WP I see getting on the box if everything goes his way in the same night.

Those would have to be a mountain of falling cards....no disrespect to either guy but

Matt Moss. He had Hill's measure in the Aussie series, though I can't see him matching RV, Stewart or Dungey. Top 10 for sure (or crash - he pushes hard...)

I think Weimer. If his head is screwed on right, he should be up there.

Otherwise, I think Hill has a shit ton of fight in him. If he says he feels good, he will mix it up in the front.

Matt Moss? LOL. Yea right. Hill had him beat until Matt's brother cleaned him out guaranteeing a Moss win. Matt will be lucky to make the main the first 4 rounds he's racing. Hill and Grant both have the potential to do really well if everything goes right for them. I don't know about wins as the only guys I see winning any races are RV, JS, JB, and maybe KR/ET. Grant and Hill I think will podium occasionally and I think Peick could get a top five once or twice and I think Peick will finish in the top 10 if he races all rounds.

I definitely give Weimer the nod for sleeper over Hill. People rave on Hill's talent and style, but even his golden years he earned one win ever. And that was almost 6 years ago when Stewart was injured. Weimer has a regional title and numerous race wins on the 250. I'm going with him.

Hills got more talent and potential than Weimer. Sure Josh's last win was a while ago, but that's because he injured himself really bad and missed a few years. But he still got a win in the 450 class, won a heat race last year, and is finally getting healthy again. Weimer's been on a full works Kawasaki the last couple years. No wins. Although he's a solid, consistent, rider he doesn't have those flashes of brilliance that guys like Hill, Grant, etc. have.

Tickle? I don't think so. He's just like Weimer. They both won 250 SX championships, but haven't really done anything on 450's.

See, everybody says that. But where does the potential come from? Because he has a nice style? To really find the potential, you have to look back to his amateur days. Weimer has ran with and beat Dungey straight up. Josh wasn't faster than Dungey in 2010, but he was very consistent. Hill obviously has lots of talent, but I think Weimer is better.

Goerke.
He was well above expectations last year, he's been healthy through the off season and this is the second year on that bike. Gotta think they'll have it better dialed in.

As far as championship, I'll say Dungey. Not exactly a sleeper, but I feel like NO ONE in the media has even touched on him this off season. One slip from Villopoto and the title would be his. Reed and Stewart are not fast enough of consistent enough (respectively) to beat RD and I'm still not convinced Barcia has the speed on that 450 to straight up beat the big 4.

I think Josh is just now getting back to being healthy and close to where he was before his back flip deal. Josh has won a 450 main previously, and he won a heat race last year. I know that's not everything, but what has Weimer done on a 450? And Weimer has been on the best team and the best bike. If Weimer can't do it with a full ride from Kawi, where is he gonna do it?Josh Hill, Josh Grant, etc just have these moments where they lead for a little while, holeshot, show tons of speed, or even win (once in a great while) I just see Weimer as the more consistent rider. He's not gonna win but he'll always be 5-15. I see what your saying and you think Weimer is the better pick. And that's fine. If I had to pick between Hill/Grant and Weimer and I had to choose one guy that would finish in the top 10 in the series, and one guy that had a chance to win. I'd pick Hill/Grant for the win and Weimer for the top 10 in the series end.

I agree about both Weimer and Hill. Weimer seems to be in much better spirits this year on his new program. I also think Hill is being way over hyped. I can't believe how many people think he can win a race. He won in 2008 in what was a weak field. Dungey finished 2nd in that race in a rare 450 race for him. Here we are 6 years later where Hill has missed 2 whole SX seasons and has raced 0 outdoor seasons (yes that hurts him) and the field is stacked more than ever. He should be happy to get top 10s. I believe a top 5 would be a huge accomplishment for Hill. Yes he won a heat in MN last year but in the Main I think he was in 2nd around the first corner and he faded all the way back to 8th.
