I think you could be correct. When did he realize he missed the joker lane? One milli second distraction.... can lead to crash. RV2 was focused on passing Stewart... and Steward hits Joker Lane.

i have to agree with the above, i think at the speeds the guys are running, things can get ugly quick. i put the camerman crossing the track at the colorodo national incident in this category

This whole distraction thing and the joker lane is dangerous is BS. FYI moto is dangerous. You start setting up for a pass multiple corners ahead of time yet it's too distracting to remember the joker lane? Oh not to mention they had it on Dungey's pit board e very lap and he still missed it.

I'm with Doc on this one. RV's foot came off and is what caused him to eat it. Two of the sports best made mistakes and that's all it is.

After race press said RV thought he had one more lap to go.

Sucks that he crashed, but I guess that Karma from laughing at RD for missing the Joker Lane in his post first moto interview came back to bite Villopoto in the ass!!

I really dug the joker lane the last few years , but tonight I kind of have mixed emotions about it. It did make for some great racing , but it also took some of it away. Just when you thought two dudes like RV and Stewart were going to go at it.....that lane kind of screwed it up. Totally RV's fault for missing it.......but it still happened in a flash and then it was over. The pace these guys are going , I can easily see why RD and RV both missed it.

"just when you though two dudes like RV and Stewart were going to go at it" What? Were you on a bathroom break for that second moto? Pretty much back and forth the whole time.

Not sure if you guys saw what I saw, but to me it looked like RV was planning on going through the joker lane, however he went in too fast and couldn't turn in on time, because it seemed like he had a bit of hesitation as he started hauling down the start straight.

Remember, when Dungey missed the joker lane, he wasn't close enough to Villipoto to see him enter it. However, Villipoto was RIGHT BEHIND Stewart when he missed it. No way Villipoto could "forget" to go through it if he's watching Stewart enter it.

RV flat out forgot, just like Dungey. He knew exactly where that joker lane was, theres no way he was "going to fast" to make the corner. That's a stupid argument.

I'm with Erik here. . . Go back and watch his line. He was aimed right at the same line Stewart took 5 bike lengths before the entrance. His front end started to wash and/ or back end broke loose just before the entrance. He had to stick his leg out to recover and gain balance while missing the tough block which pushed his line wide. He was absolutely set up to take it but a riding mistake made him miss the entrance. And it's a bit weak to say what you said. Stranger things have happened but especially after what happened with Dungey in Moto 1, the chances of forgetting have substantially dropped. I think the "he forgot" excuse is just the easy excuse.

Sorry about the bad photo but this is the last lap where he should have taken the joker.

They should mark it with a big cheesy-assed Joker sign. It's Vegas, I'm sure they can find one somewhere.

But then, by this argument ( that he was simply going "too fast" and missed the corner ) why wasn't he flying off the track everywhere else in the race?

He and Stewy were going extremely fast the whole race, and raced a damn near perfect moto, so why, on the obstacle that absolutely mattered the most did RV miss the turn?

He should have been missing turns all over the race track then....................Whistling

Sorry erik, absolutey no disrespect was meant.

I was just very sure an RV fanboy would show up very soon with an excuse. Not saying you are one.

Think about it for a second - you Just realize you threw away a MILLION DOLLARS with a brain fart as you are hitting the face of the biggest jump on the track.

Which is more painful, the full body bruise he will have tomorrow or losing the million???
So keep the Joker lane and get rid of the million bucks?

100% Incorrect.

Fallacious.

Misinformed.

Haven't you ever ridden before???

This is the issue when people on this website come on here and state things like they are facts: "RV crashed because..."

First of all, it makes you sound like a preachy snob and second, you're going to get it slammed in your face when you've been proven incorrect.

With some simple hedging, i.e. "I think that" you can completely eliminate this problem.

None taken dirtnap. And no, I'm not a Villipoto fan at all, the only time I cheer for him is at the MXON. Overshooting a turn like that is possible because not only is it a sweeper, but it's not like there's tuff blocks guiding his way through like every other turn. On the joker it's a bit of a blind turn, where you have to remember exactly where it is and how fast you can enter it. So if it's possible that he forgot the joker lane altogether, wouldn't it be possible he had a slight miscalculation on where and how to enter it? Remember they really didn't hit the joker lane in any of their practice sessions, Villipoto had probably gone through it only two or three times before that second moto.

We'll soon find what really happened as I'm sure every Moto site that exists is going to interview Villipoto in the next few days.
No, I'm not counting that press conference or whatever it was as an interview. I'm waiting for a more direct, detailed interview, like one you'd hear on dmxs, pulp, or even racerx.

The Joker lane was great last night, loved it!
Did it cause Villo to crash? Perhaps...
But perhaps not...
We've seen him crash plenty of times with no Joker Lanes around.
Dunge should have crashed too when he missed it (forgot, but he knew something was up).
And Stew should wreck just THINKING about it, with his crash record lol.

So the top 2 guys forget/mess up Joker Lane, but did ANYONE else in the Mains miss it too?

He obviously wasnt faster as he didnt pull faster times and didnt make the pass stick. Dont blame the joker lane for why RV couldnt get it done. He got beat. I find it hilarious people think Dungey "forgot" about the joker lane as he looked over to his right at RV when he was on the straight away. What an actor. James was the man tonight bottom line. If he didnt get robbed of his first moto start, we might be talking about his $1 million dollar win.

You pretty much said exactly what I was "trying" to say. The racing between those guys was great all the way up until the last lap when RV missed the joker lane. I meant that the Joker lane screwed up the racing at that particular moment. That sounds wrong........RV actually messed it up by missing it. IF the joker lane hadn't been there and they had just the single lane SX track in front of them.....they would of duked it out until the checkered flag. Hence what i was trying to say in a weird way....the joker lane screwed the race up.

RV has a pit board, the White flag and the first Moto episode as far as the joker lane goes, and he has brakes too at the end of the day too

Stewart rattled his cage after putting that pass back on him IMO and RV came in too fast and blew it,he was pretty much on the limit, hence the carnage that followed

No I don't have the video but at the same press conference, he said he felt bad for Dungey and wanted to show people
it could happen to anyone. Another reason he's cool.

I wonder if he missed the white flag and was just blitzing the snot out of the track to try to clear enough time to hit it the next lap and get out in front of Stewart. It's the only thing that makes sense to me. I can't see that he could know he missed it and was screwed as Dungey was in the first and still risk that section.

That's the only thing ~ missing the white flag ~ that really makes sense. Not that making sense is a relevant criterium here.

This is so dumb!

RV stacked it up because he didn't get all the way over the jump that only two other people were doing.

This wasn't a super technical timing section, it was a large leap and he came up about six inches short.

TripleFive.... it was not super technical? LOL.... come one bro! Seriously bro... come on.

* No one did it in practice
* Vegas dirt is extremely hard pack - throttle control is essential
* Nailing the berm before was essential
* Two riders... TWO were doing it

In helmet communication would have prevented this. It's another area to market the sport.. NASCAR does it and I personally think we could make it work.. I would pay to listen to headset talk..I think this is the platform you want to try stuff like that..

Well there is no doubt that every lap for these guys is tremendously technical, but in my experience coming out of a corner perfectly and holding it on is less technical than a tricky timing section where jump combinations need to be strung together with extreme precision.

I would never say that it was easy by any stretch; I'm saying that, in my opinion, a jump like that requires less cerebral thought than a delicate timing obstacle.
