Yep Teggers advise is spot on, if you buy a 2-smoker you will regret it. The 450's are so easy to ride and more forgiving than a smoker.

Thanks G-man, I'm already learning to go even faster, yikes! Rode against Keevan at Tulare and he had one bad moto and I beat him and made good friends during that time and that's what 40+,50+ is all about, racing and making friends at our age! Now I'm off to Boise Idaho for the Oldtimers International there and It looks like rain and snow for 5 motos!!!!! Also back on track, four stroke maintenece is not as bad as everyone makes out, just change the oil alot and keep valves adjusted

Keeven's a great guy and hauls the mail on that lil 250F. I felt bad when he said "you culda let me win one"..... :-( lol

Did he mention anything about the AZ race?

Dang I wish i could hit all those Internationals, that is the great fun doing five LONG motos in a w/e....

And you are right about making friends at the track at our age, if you are going to Idaho say Hi to Monte the MotoPastor. He will be doing the morning sermon--great guy!

I'm 53 and ride a 500 two stroke, so...it's not a blanket statement kind of thing. I don't ride a 500 because I'm fast and need the power, I ride one because they're more fun. And I personally think any two stroke is more fun to ride than a four stroke.

To me, a two stroke is lighter, less top heavy and super easy to ride. And cheaper to ride. But to each his own, for most of my riding life you had your choice about WHICH two stroke to ride, it's nice to have options.

I dug up this old thread 'cause I didn't want to start a new thread on my one stupid comment, but I'll be 51 in October, my son just started college, and the light bulb just went on that I'm getting old. Funny thing is I was at the track last Saturday practicing a rhythm section, trying to get over the biggest (last) jump clean, and all I could feel was just the rush of trying to accomplish it. I'm glad I still have that feeling and drive. I'm not looking forward to the day it seriously starts to go away. That definitely isn't happening yet....headed to the track tomorrow to finish out that section and work on two others, plus keep dropping my lap times. Smile

I quit racing back in 1984 and have'nt been on a bike since.
What's your input?
Thanks, Mark
Are you kidding? The biggest class at REM (the Glenn Helen promoter in So Cal) is usually the 50+ class! I'm 48 and ride MX most every weekend and race about 5-10 times a year......Just get a bike and do it; then kick yourself for not doing it sooner!

I have a 500AF. It's actually one of the easiest (and funnest) bikes I've ever ridden, even at my 'advanced' age....lol. (yes, I'm AARP eligible!)

I am hitting the big 50 in a month and still go out to the track every chance I get. On average I am putting 4-5 20 min motos each time I make it to the track and if I cannot make it to the track i am putting in 30 mile rides on the mountain bike.

This Sunday it looks like rain so will make every effort to make it out to the track and get nice and muddy Cool

Cool old thread . I'm 38 and plan on getting back out there soon. My son is 5 and ready for a 50cc .
I haven't raced since 1992
I'm thinking ill get a 250f
I've always had 2strokes but I like the idea of a little smoother power delivery.

I'm 43...and I am the youngest of my riding buddies. You're never too old. As others have said...downside is injuries take a heck of a lot longer to heal.

Kent Howerton still rides at our local track and kills it at 59.

46 still going. Am I slowing down? Yes. But I still enjoy coming out of turns, getting over stuff and an occasional burst of energy.

I'm going out next weekend to ride a 2- stroke for the first time since that day... Wish me luck Grinning

I'll be 52 in a couple weeks. I quit riding for 20 years until starting back up almost a year ago. I was surprised - shocked really - to see so many guys my age or older out there giving the track the what for. I'm sorry I ever quit and am so glad to be back that at times I'm giddy out there riding. Photo from 2 weeks ago at NFMX.

I'll be 50 this year. The largest class in FTR Hare Scrambles is Master 50+.... Lots of fun riding with the guys and talking old stories. The same guys spend the most $ on their kids and grandkids... Don't see too many younger racers doing it on their own w/o family support...

Geez, I was 46 when this thread started.
Now I'm 52 and still going.
Wonder what peters out first, this thread or me...
I've been racing since 76, so I'm thinking I can outlast this sucker if I work at it..

I didn't start riding an MX bike until I was 36... Just turned 44 and still riding. I don't really race much short of small local stuff and charity based races...all for fun. I keep my age and skill level in mind... Don't do anything crazy. It took a while to squelch my ego when the kids on the 65's passed me, but I am finally past letting that bother me! They bounce... I break! Big difference! LOL

Its been 23 years (I am 37) since I have raced motocross. Last week, I went to my first track to practice. I had a ball. I went yesterday and improved significantly. One of the best decisions I have made.... get after it.

I'm going on 53, although I just broke my wrist pretty bad 8 weeks ago. Been at it for 38 years. It is about as bad as any other vice.
Been hurt a lot like anyone else that has done this sport. Wish I could quit, tell myself for the last 8 weeks I am quiting, but my wife knows better.

Called Allsport Dynamics today and ordered a new wrist brace......

And yes, that is really a old guy busting a berm. I still got it, just no scrubbs for me. Old school straight on jumping here......

Been racing off and on since 80... Went 1-1 against a bunch of local "C" class squids at 42 yrs old , that was in 06.

I've spoken to Mike Quinn (D23 guru) a few times regarding senior vet classes and the AMA acknowledges that the 17 to 28yr old racers have no expendable money anymore. So the addition of more older age classes is a real possibility.

The AMA has become Delta House and are looking for more Larry Krogers.

*raises hand*

Raced for the first time in 5 years a few months ago and had a great time. I miss it, but not the outlay of $$$.
