I loved Brad Lackey. Reminded me of Lonesome Dave from Foghat when he had the big mustache. And James Taylor without it.

I liked Danny LaPorte, but I always thought it kind of sucked that Brad wasn't the first American World Champ. He really deserved it.

Happy Birthday to the Champ!

Sure about that? I thought it was the other way around. LaPorte first, followed by Lackey.

"However, in the 250cc, a young Georges Jobé took the title in 1980. Everybody was foreseeing a great future, but injuries made him lose the 1981 title against Brit Neil Hudson and the 1982 one against American Danny Laporte – who was the first American World Champion, one week before Brad Lackey in the 500cc class."

Yes, pretty damn sure. Smile Apparently another thing the FIM cannot get right about MX is its own history. Both clinched in the final round, and the 500's ended before the 250s.

This bad ass dude, Bad Brad, was my very first motocross hero.

He devoted ten years of his life to become a WORLD motocross champ. He began his quest when I was a mere 12 years old, and at that time of my life, 10 years seemed like an eternity!

I literally idolized this guy, my family still, to this day tease me about my obsession in my younger years over Lackey.

I had "Brad Lackey" gloves, a necklace like he wore, smoked pot, (and lots of it) had a Kawasaki, wanted a Husqvarna or CZ or whatever he was ridin' at the time. I had it bad.

Yep, dig lackey's racing career.

Happy birthday Brad.

Happy Birthday Brad from the many fans you made in Europe with your steely determination and dedication to become World Champion!

Would any of today's alumni have lived out of a shed in czecho with no electricity and running water to chase their dream of becoming World Champion?, I very much doubt it. Shipping your wife & daughter over to Europe, living out of the truck becoming nomadic moto gypsies, racing against your moto heroes, is the stuff legends are made off!

It was very sad the "wheels fell of your wagon", when no factory was prepared to pay you what you wanted and you didn't get to defend your title, except for that 1 off ride at Carlsbad GP. However I do admire you for your principles and at least you can say you retired undefeated!
Have a Great 60th Birthday and here's to many more in the future!

Michael, have you ever checked this ?
A "crazy" French fan made this all by himself.
Very reliable and a ton of stuff that you can't find anywhere else on the whole web (world)...

Old 500GP are listed under "MX3" (which is about the only thing that I find not super sharp on this site)

And now Brad just comes cruising up in a golf cart, sees a campfire, some motoheads and a bottle of wine.....two hours later, all in the world is good. Talk about some epic bench racing, just one of the finer things at Diamond Don's Vintage Extravaganza.

Happy Birthday Brad!
