Number one: I didn't think you "centered" me out. Hell I didn't even think you singled me out. I don't want to hurt your "feelings", but fact is, I don't care.

Number two: You're just plain wrong about this on both counts. Most people do have the ability and/or the option to beat up a criminal or shoot him. Consider the following:
Most thieves are small in stature. They also know that they have just done something wrong. How much fight do you think they have in them? They are desperate to run, not fight.
If you bloody their nose, you may give them a reason to fight.
If you break their nose, you give them a reason to surrender.
If you break their nose more than once, you give them a reason to fear you.
When dealing with thieves, I've found that fear works best. They won't come back after you.
I don't advocate shooting anyone, but I don't rule it out either, especially in the mind of the thief. See above for the advantages of instilling fear.

To answer your other question about how the old lady handles these situations:
Every old lady on my block has my phone number . I always tell them to call the police first, then call me. Anytime, night or day. Don't worry about false alarms or waking me up. If they're afraid, that's enough. I explain to them that, if I'm home, I'll get there before the police, and I'll make sure they won't come back. I would hope that all of you reading this have similar arrangements with your neighbors. If you haven't, please do so soon. It's your responsibility as a neighbor and a man. Even if you don't like them. Again, don't tell them what you'll do, just do it and keep your mouth shut. And yes, there have been times when I've been "interviewed" by the police, but I always asked them who they believed, me or the guy with the bolt cutters. Case closed.

I have a question for Terry K. You're a moderator? Really? Please re-read my comments and yours, then ask yourself if you're not proving my earlier point about why so few bother to post their own comments. This is not a personal attack, just a request for reasoned thought on your part. Again, I don't hate cops. I hate lawyers.

Let's put this thing to rest, and put the focus back on trying to help Jeff get his bike back. There are so many of you reading this who will be riding this weekend (on a track or trail riding at a popular spot), I have to think that some of you will be in the same area as the thief. Of course, I'm assuming two things:
The thief will be out riding because of the weather.
The thief doesn't hang out on Vital.
I encourage each of you to make an effort. Ride around the pits, campsites, etc., and really look for this bike. The plastic may be changed, but the hubs won't. Jeff should post the vin number. If you find a match, take the bike and his car keys. Get as much info about him as you can (license tag, name, picture). Don't fight him or detain him. Too many witnesses. Let him know that he will be getting visitors very soon. Make it convincing.

BTW, I've never met Jeff or any of his family. All of you share the same passion for bikes, racing, and off-roading. The least you owe one another is to make an effort.

BTW2: I hate thieves as much as I hate lawyers.
Lol, you sure are reading a LOT more into what I said that what there really is. Not sure where you're going with the "you're a moderator" thing. Sorry about the "centered" thing. It's a Canadian term. I'll Americanize my words for you next time.

Most thieves are small in stature? Lol, really?

You seem to have all the answers, but you'll never convince me that EVERYONE everywhere have the options you have outlined.

PS: I had a friend who was stabbed to death when he went to rescue a woman who was being beaten by her husband.

Funny thing here is, my son is a cop, and my daughter is in law school. lol Now thats funny right there. Tongue

Most thieves are small in stature .... This one made my day. I'm in law enforcement too and that's funny. Nobody here has ever taken on a "thief" experiencing cocaine psychosis. It's something else.

How did that work out for that Zimmerman guy in FL? His life is ruined as well as that of his family.
I don't know if he was doing the right thing or not, but if he wasn't, he's done, if he did, he's done.
No win situation. I'm all for helping out the neighbors when they are in trouble, but to go look for trouble?
Not so much.

I have! He wasn't technically a thief at the time but I'm sure he had been at some point in his life. He wasn't small though for some reason?!

I had planned on dropping my kids CRF250 bike at TV's place but he never called me back. Now I think it might have been a good thing.
I sure hope we can find JA's bike.

Here is a funny story about calling the cops...

I came home one evening and literally found some "nice young man", sitting inside my truck, going thru my things, so I grab my phone and call the cops, at the same time i approach this guy...of course he jumps out and is high as a kite and telling me this was HIS truck and he lost the keys...then he takes a swing at me...so i grab him and hold him down, as my neighbor finishes my phone call with the cops...i held this guy down for 45min and still no cop...so finally i let him up and basically give him a swift kick in the a$$ as he runs away...

fast forward to later in the evening...4 hours later...i am in the garage with some friends...music is on and we are just bsing drinking beers...cop car pulls up so i go outside assuming he is there to take a report.....NOPE, he was there for a "noise" complaint....wtf? So moral of the story is call the cops for a noise complaint cause they come quick, but call them about a a drunk or high thief in your truck, and they NEVER come.... Wink

OK,OK, OK. Let me explain this one last time. I'll use small words in hopes you'll understand. This thread is about helping Jeff Alessi get his bike back. Look to the top for proof. Some of you who would rather try to engage me in a pissing contest only serve to prove my earlier point about why most normal people don't try to post up on this or any other websites.

First, let me apologize for my statement about most thieves being small in stature. This was based on my limited experience with catching thieves in the act. Actually, the guy who stole Chris' bike was pretty big. The others, however, were not. My mistake for making a generalization.

That being said, let me address the most recent hair-splitters:

Flatliner: Glad I made your day. Now, let's look at your sweeping statement about how nobody here having taken on a thief experiencing a cocaine psychosis. Really? You know this how? First off, someone experiencing a psychotic episode is, by definition, out of control both physically and mentally. Think this describes someone who cases a location, waits until he knows that there's no one home, then deliberately and stealthily breaks into the garage and takes a bike? After all, that's what we're talking about here (bike thefts), isn't it? Kind of hard to do while rolling on the ground screaming and swallowing your tongue, wouldn't you agree?

As to nobody here having dealt with a person having a psychotic episode, I, for one, have seen several. I went to college at UCSB in the late 60's. Any questions? I also spent most of my life in Studio City amongst all of the "stars" and wannabes. Given that you're in Canada, want to compare the actual number of times each of us has had to deal with this? One time, I had to wait for thirty minutes for the paramedics to arrive, sedate the guy, knock out one of his teeth, insert a plastic screw and open his jaw so they could remove my thumb. Seven stitches. All because I was stupid enough to reach into his mouth in order to pull his tongue out of his throat. OK, you're turn. Tell us about your "something else" experience. I'm sure and I are are the only two on this website who've ever had to deal with something like this, aren't you?

Would you rather I hijack this thread into sharing stories about police incompetence? Are you aware, for instance, that LAPD shot a white guy during the recent Chris Dorner manhunt? Or that San Bernadino Sheriffs Dept. shot two Hispanic women in the back in broad daylight while they were delivering newspapers? In both instances, the victims were driving white or light grey pickups. BTW, Chris Dorner was a 6'6" bald black man driving a black SUV. Someone gots some "splaining" to do. Don't worry, though, each dept. has a strong union. Nobody will lose their job over this. If Congress ever passes stricter gun licensing standards, I suggest that they start with the cops.

How do you like having someone doing to you what you attempted to do to me? Wanna play some more?

Toolmaker: If you get to compare me to George Zimmerman, do I get to compare you to the French Army? I don't look for trouble, but I don't run from it either. Believe it or not, there are some things worth fighting for.

Bartoner: If you ever have something like this happen again, call 911 and tell them someone is trying to steal your truck, and some SI swimsuit models are in it. When SWAT arrives a few seconds later, show them your magazine.

I hope that all of this does two things. First, it brings a lot of attention to Jeff's bike being stolen. Look at the number of hits that this has already had. IOW, it's working.

Second, I hope this encourages the vast majority of you to call out these Internet cowboys who only hang out here to split hairs and put others down. Don't sit on your hands any longer. Land on them hard. It's the only thing that will shut them up. Insist that they stay on topic, and if they have nothing to add, encourage them to get off your website. Don't call them names or resort to dropping "F" bombs. Think through your responses. If nothing else, I hope that I've shown you the way. This has been going on for far too long on this and nearly all other websites.

I know as I write this that more criticism will follow. Some people just can't help themselves. They would much rather talk about me and all my faults rather than contribute or even comment about Jeff's plight. For this reason, I'll refrain from further comments. I'll check back from time to time just to see if Jeff ever got his bike back.

Thank you for "listening" to me.

Your doing it all wrong... When you call the police mention that you have the suspect and when were they gonna pick up the body? They will come running guarenteed. Or since you are in the High desert, just a 1 way ride out to a dry lake (it worked in Vegas)

Good rant, well composed but missing some facts.
Torrance PD shot up a Honda Ridgeline
LAPD shot the 2 women. Both incidents happened at 5 or so in the morning. It was still dark. The truck was dark blue, lights out weaving down the street.
San Bernardino SO didn't shoot anyone until they cornered Dorner.

Bob-Welcome to the party! I like it when you are here!!!

Captmoto- Do those facts really change your perspective on what happened there? The fact that they would shoot before identifying what they were shooting at is absolutely ludacris. Anyone that thinks the cops are out there to protect and serve has another thing coming. Dont get me wrong, there are acceptions to the rule. That said. Every cop I have ever met is nothing but a ticket fairy trying to save the world by racking up money for the state by writing out violations. But when there is a real problem they arent worth a damn.

TerryK - When I have a problem, I call on my family. The people I can count on through thick and thin.

One of my best friends was in the final shoot out off Hwy38 before Dorner ran into the cabin. He is an awesome guy with three daughters that we have seen grow up over the last 18 years. They are an awesome family. And my friend would do anything to help anyone. That day one of his friends died right in front of him. And one of his other friends got his lower jaw blown off. They were chasing the guy that everyone else was running away from. Would you do that? Chase a madman shooting at you as you run into an unfamiliar forest while you family and warm dinner await you at home? Even as your friends are going down right beside you?

Don't generalize your take on cops until you get a little older and entertain some better people.

No, you don't get to compare me to the French army. We both agree there are things worth fighting for. We just don't agree on what. I don't see any value in chasing trouble a week after the fact. I guess we are just at two different points in life that we value things differently. Maybe that's why I was a fireman earlier in life as I wanted to help people when they needed it rather than chase down criminals after the fact. I will keep my eyes open to any information that might help and pass it on. Beyond that it's a police issue.

Still praying I get it back. Makes me hate those days I woke up and didn't ride when I had the bike to go out on. It's gonna be pretty depressing till I get another bike.
