A friend told me the thief already had a warrant out for his arrest (for something else) so I called the cops back. Get this; they didn't have the time to go over to the thief's house with me to retrieve my bike. Once I told them the dude already had a warrant out for his arrest, their focus turned on me about how I got that info.
My dad and I went by ourselves without any help from the cops...however I did get pulled over a few days later for tinted windows.

I had an ex girlfriend that actually stole my truck. When the cop finally showed up hours later he asked if I had ever let her use the truck before. I said yes...why. He tells me that she can now use the truck anytime she wants. I said thats ridicolus sir she cant just come over here, jump a fence and take my truck! The cop said to me...go in your house on Im taking you to jail for drunk in public. I wasnt drunk and I was in my garrage while talking to the guy. He then tells me he has another call to go to where there is a baby not breathing. I didnt bother to tell this idiot that if there is a baby not breathing Im sure the paramedics are already on the scene. Who hires these guys?
IF that's the guy he is very dumb.

The point is that there are undoubtedly friends or acquaintances of the thief who are also suspicious, and some of them might decide to do the right thing. It only takes one, but you need to do the legwork right now. Chris got the phone call within a few days of posting the flyers. Time is not on your side. The guy who stole Chris' bike was a construction worker who was building a new house across the street from Chris. I can assure you that whoever took yours is someone who has been there before, especially given that he wasn't afraid of the dogs.
I won't go into the reasons, but don't expect much help from the police. Bottom line, it isn't their bike. What you decide to do with the thief is your business. Just make sure that you keep your mouth shut about it. Tell no one. I prefer giving them a religious experience. If you do find him/them, we live near you and would be happy to help.
Had my bike stolen on Christmas a few years ago. Found it on craigslist, got a ton of evidence and info on the thieves by acting like a buyer. Police treated me like I was the criminal the entire time, did next to nothing to help me and never once allowed me to give them any type of evidence to prove it, and the thieves got away clean by swapping the frame with one from a bike that one of the guys that helped stole it owned. Still paying that bike off... owe thousands. Lesson learned; dont rely on the police, be more careful with your belongings (not insinuating anything here), and get insurance.
And tell no one except accomplices.

Just because someone relates their personal opinion based on experience is no reason to condemn them. This is why I seldom visit or post on websites. We've become so polarized that every comment is parsed for PC or a reason to attack. Just look at this website for proof.
To answer your question, when I catch someone doing me wrong, the first thing that I tell them is that I won't be calling the cops, they will.

Number two, most people don't have the option or the ability to A: beat a criminal up or B: shoot one.
Or you can wait 45 minutes to an hour and a half.....By that time even a dumb criminals gone.
(thats a rhetorical question btw)
Ill bet ya if I paid a local crack head 1/10 of what a cop makes in one night...half up front and half when he/she gave me the address where my stuff was Id have a decent chance of recovering my property lol!
Number two: You're just plain wrong about this on both counts. Most people do have the ability and/or the option to beat up a criminal or shoot him. Consider the following:
Most thieves are small in stature. They also know that they have just done something wrong. How much fight do you think they have in them? They are desperate to run, not fight.
If you bloody their nose, you may give them a reason to fight.
If you break their nose, you give them a reason to surrender.
If you break their nose more than once, you give them a reason to fear you.
When dealing with thieves, I've found that fear works best. They won't come back after you.
I don't advocate shooting anyone, but I don't rule it out either, especially in the mind of the thief. See above for the advantages of instilling fear.
To answer your other question about how the old lady handles these situations:
Every old lady on my block has my phone number . I always tell them to call the police first, then call me. Anytime, night or day. Don't worry about false alarms or waking me up. If they're afraid, that's enough. I explain to them that, if I'm home, I'll get there before the police, and I'll make sure they won't come back. I would hope that all of you reading this have similar arrangements with your neighbors. If you haven't, please do so soon. It's your responsibility as a neighbor and a man. Even if you don't like them. Again, don't tell them what you'll do, just do it and keep your mouth shut. And yes, there have been times when I've been "interviewed" by the police, but I always asked them who they believed, me or the guy with the bolt cutters. Case closed.
I have a question for Terry K. You're a moderator? Really? Please re-read my comments and yours, then ask yourself if you're not proving my earlier point about why so few bother to post their own comments. This is not a personal attack, just a request for reasoned thought on your part. Again, I don't hate cops. I hate lawyers.
Let's put this thing to rest, and put the focus back on trying to help Jeff get his bike back. There are so many of you reading this who will be riding this weekend (on a track or trail riding at a popular spot), I have to think that some of you will be in the same area as the thief. Of course, I'm assuming two things:
The thief will be out riding because of the weather.
The thief doesn't hang out on Vital.
I encourage each of you to make an effort. Ride around the pits, campsites, etc., and really look for this bike. The plastic may be changed, but the hubs won't. Jeff should post the vin number. If you find a match, take the bike and his car keys. Get as much info about him as you can (license tag, name, picture). Don't fight him or detain him. Too many witnesses. Let him know that he will be getting visitors very soon. Make it convincing.
BTW, I've never met Jeff or any of his family. All of you share the same passion for bikes, racing, and off-roading. The least you owe one another is to make an effort.
BTW2: I hate thieves as much as I hate lawyers.
