Yep and it's boring a hell to watch. The 250 class is a lot more exciting to watch and should be the premier class. Look around folks, most every motor sport out there is working to slow down their respected machines since technology has outpaced mans ability. Not our sport, we just keep making them faster and better even worse, we put those machines in the hands of 14 year old amateurs.
Well, motogp slowed their bikes down to 800cc, but quickly reverted after a couple of seasons back to 1000cc's this year. ???

250cc limit in the premiere class - any stroke goes.

150cc limit in the junior class - any stroke goes.

450s outdoor ? Oh hell yes.

Discuss, with beer and nachos.

And NO cross-jumping !
Agree 100% Roop.

If Feld and the AMA don't realize it's in their best interest to tame things down, they're idiots. I'm sure viewer numbers both on TV and in person decline with each top name taken out of action.

A Hyabusa is faster than a 450 and a service Honda 500 but, I don't think RC could lap as fast on it as an RMZ450. When you get that much HP it is as much about how you put it to the ground. 500 2 strokes were never good mx bikes that why they went away. It wasn't an AMA conspiracy.

But I do think the tracks might now break down as quickly, and guys might not be able to pull the trigger on some huge triple out of a corner like they can do now.

Yes, ask Roger de Coster and why he hired Dungey.

To paraphrase The Man " Kids think they are impressing me doing big jumps, fuck that crap, they can't get around a corner worth a shit. Dungey impressed me 'cos he can corner like a motherfucker".

Corner speed has always sorted the wheat from the chaff but it's a dying art thanks to 450's.

Of course RV can still corner like a beast but generally it's on the wane.

An interesting turn of events for sure. I'll see them in Indy this year but I don't follow the series as I should.

bad example... They are still trying to make up for the awesomeness that was the 500cc 2 stroke Smile . talk about a series that has SUFFERED at the hands of the 4 stroke. The racing in the GP class these days is about as boring as any ever witnessed. (minus a couple races)...not to mention the fact that there are maybe 5 teams that can build a competitive bike.

Most of all though.. "they" went away from the 500cc 2 strokes because it wasn't a product they marketed to the public. The OEMs wanted a bike they could slap a R1 sticker on and sell more bikes.... Not really sure if they have gotten any closer to that though. But it is a strikingly similar issue to what we see here in this debate.

THey were pretty amazing bikes in their day. But they had more motor than the technology at the time could control. the 500AF bikes solve some of those control issues.

But you have to agree that a 500AF is still a 20 year old engine that creates more HP than the 450s. Imagine if there were R&D on them now? maybe they too would have a more tractable engine and even more HP...

125 (regional east west)
250 (2 or 4 stroke with a $17,500.00 claiming rule.)
open (drop the homo rule ) indoors and / or outdoors only if you want

Sounds good to me.

Well you are the supreme power of VitalMX haha Laughing

I did not mean to take the focus off supercross racing. The first moto at Steel City was just an example that popped into my head, because both gladiators were "Dropping the hammer" that moto - as Cole Trickle once said.

I am not opposed to 450cc engine outdoors.

You mean in SX (there were some early 500 SX races) or entirely?

They got rid of them entirely because it cost too much to run three classes outdoors once the 125's came on.

As to Rup's question, I think it would be a great show if all the best current 250 and 450 riders were on 250f's in the same class. Not the best business proposition for OEMs and teams, but the racing would be better and deeper.

Those homogolation rules are there to protect the big 4-5. It keeps the field looking very japanese (and 4 stroke). until this new orange wave struck our coast line a few years back... they had the entire market in pro racing.

Not to say companies like Husky, TM, Maico, Gas Gas, don't make good products but they haven't exactly been setting the world on fire in the GP's. It is a shame they cant represent their company in our race series none the less.

As far as the 500AF goes.. it would be cool to see someone run it in the outdoors (knowing it cant happen). I really believe the right rider could be competitive on that bike at half the cost of a race ready 450. But we will never know. Im not saying they would win but I bet someone could easily put one of those bikes in the show outdoors every week against 450s.

all u gotta do is watch a helmet cam of a 450. It's litterally a blip of the throttle and these guys are clearing the triples no problem. I mean they are cranking them from the inside line like nothing. Even the lites class is tapping it from the inside line. it used to be way, way more difficult than that. somethings gotta give.

now everything is high speed rhythm sections that cause major damage when they auger. you watch some of the old supercrosses that tony puts up and you see how slow the races were...yeah not as exciting and smooth/flowing...but the casualty rate was much less.

they keep building these tracks to accommodate the big bikes. need to check it up. change one or the other.

I agree with you Rupert. I started a thread a while ago on the exact same thing:

Would the championship be better wtih all the top riders & a little slower bikes? Bring back 2 strokes... LOL

Actually not really intending to start the 2 stroke, 4 stroke thing, it's more the speed of the 450's. The attrition is unbelievable, there was something like 8 riders out after first 2 rounds. While I do think the mass of the 4 stroke makes them a little less manageable, I also think the pace is pushing these riders into mistakes with more serious consequences. I don't see the same attrition in the 250's. The 450's are so fast, the riders are having serious crashes searching for the limit.

I don't care if it was a 250 4t, 250 2t, etc. & laps were 1 to 2 seconds slower. I'd give that up to have Reed, Dungey, Stewart (or at least some of them) battling for the championship.

Trying to reestablish New Orleans as a stop on the circuit when there are no top name riders left to compete probably doesn't go over too well. Anyone get a head count from NO? Houston looked a little slim too, does anyone know if Houston met its usual 45,000?

I would take slower laps for a healthy field too. That's what the fans come to see, exciting racing. I also think the premiere class running 250f's would keep the top tier riders (Canard, Dungey, Stewart, Reed, Villopoto) from pulling away from the second tier riders the way they do. So it might even make the racing even closer than it has been the past few years.

Huh?

Surely it would benefit the privateers. They could afford to race a 250 2 stroke against a factory 250F's, or say a worked KTM300 / TM300 in the open class.

I'd like to see the lites on 250f's with a 10, 000 $ claiming rule. No point out....no age limit.

Premier class on 250's of any stroke with the current rules.....which is basically a works bike. Oh and leaded fuel. Cool

Personally I'd be ok without 450's but there still needs to he an open class..... Hence the 350. I think that is the right sized bike for the open class. Sure the 450's produce hp for privateers but they have lost the edge they had when the 450's first came out and factories were still on 250 smokers so I don't think dropping the displacement to 350 would make a whole lotta difference, weekend warriors would bitch and I agree with then but I had 2 big bore 280 crf's and the yz400 had The best powerband of all time for me. Just put The premier class at 350 and/or 250 2 strokes. This is my opinion on this as I do believe 450's are mashing guys when they crash

Spot on. It isn't so much about top speed. If you compare average laps times between the 450 and Lites classes at a random sampling of SX mains this year, you'll see they're quite close. Often a second or two difference. It's the torque and acceleration that puts the 450 guys in dangerous situations. Not to mention, the overall athleticism of the top pros has advanced greatly in recent years. These guys are training like some of the top athletes in the world. I'd pit their endurance and strength:weight with any top athlete in the world.

In motorsports like F1 and Nascar, you can control and predict hundreds of variables and therefore minimize externalities and adjust to conditions. In motocross, the track changes throughout the day, every heat and every lap. These guys are pushing the absolute limit of what these bikes and their bodies and minds are capable of and one tiny mistake, loss of focus, even for a millisecond, can have catastrophic consequences.

I like the ideas. 450's are to much indoors. Very little return of investment when so many riders gets injured so quick.

I would like 125's as the lite class indoor and outdoor.
250's of whatever stroke you prefer/can afford as the premierclass

I couldn't agree more!! Even outdoors they're not completely wide open very often
they get so fast so quickly the riders go from in control to out of it before they know what's goin on (I'm guessing.. I've never been in that particular position)

People say that 125's are so slow but since when has MX been about speed? Going as fast as possible sure.. but actual speed notsomuch (does that make sense?)

wait no one mentioned 125's did they? ah well

I'm with you Rup

Sorry Rupert but I gotta disagree with this one. These guys aren't getting hurt because they are on 450's. They are getting hurt because of Ryan Villipoto. Reed's crash had nothing to do with how manyc cc's his bike had, ditto Dungey and likewise Stewart. Tomac got hurt on on 250 along with many others. And as another poster said the 450's are financially more viable for the guys with low budgets. Track design could be switched up for sure, I think some of the best tracks have less air, less crazy rhythym sections, mellower hoop sections and more rear tire contact time. To me one of the things that was always great about getting to the premier class was that you had to do something besides hold the throttle wide open constantly, you had to have throttle control and technique that allowed you to approach the limits of the machine not just wring it's neck out constantly.

This guy gets it. It doesn't matter that the 500 has more power, even with RC on it, he is still not going to go as fast as he does on a 450, and yes a 450 is faster than a 500, maybe not on a dyno, but in the real world yes they are. I guess some people just have a hard time letting go of the past and embracing the future. To answer the original question, HELL NO, I don't want to see the 450's go away.

It is a known fact that no one has ever been injured on a 125 or 250 2 stroke. In fact, limiting it to 250f's would eliminate all injuries. Okay......

450's are too much for SX. The only track that can handle a 450 sized machine anymore is Daytona.

Love the idea Rup, especially the part about allowing 250 two strokes to race against 250 four strokes. Problem is, the oem's will never let that part happen.

Either way though, getting 450's out of the indoors will have to make for safer racing. This year's long list of injuries is probably an abberation, but either way injuries are far too common in the big class. Ironically, these guys are more experienced, smarter racers. Theoretically they should get injured less. The 450 has just become a beast. Unlike the old 500's though, these beasts seem soft and easy and make the impossible possible........until they bite......and they always do eventually.

Maybe its the 450 fanatics that have a hard time letting go of the past. It looks like the future is shaping up without them, at some point.
