Alcohol and Tobacco Sponsors

So..if/when the energy drinks bail on us. Will Alcohol and Tobacco sponsors make a comeback?

I think theres some rules written by the AMA saying its a no-no but...Jagemeister sponsored some KTM team or still does apparently.

I dont smoke and seldom drink but i think we should let them sponsor MX and SX.

The fans still drink at the races..and still smoke bogs' too.

The Australian factory Honda team has had alcohol sponsors the last few years; Woodstock, Cougar Bourbon and now Carlton Dry.

But they did get in a little bit of trouble with one of the team riders being under 18 and promoting alcohol.

complete hypocrites when considering fast food and energy drinks are seemingly ok.

and once again, the very nature of the sport is far more dangerous than alcohol or tabacco. reminds me of the PED debate.



and anyone with any marketing savy knows that advertising doesnt create cigarette smokers or drinkers, its only effective at converting current smokers/drinkers to the respective brand being advertised.

Tobacco sponsorship restrictions fall under FDA rules. You know, like when Winston disappeared as the sponsor of the NHRA, and NASCAR.

Yea, but the Skoal Tent took things just a little bit father than advertising at the races. They used the T&A to get you in the tent, played a few games, gave out some prizes but they also sent you out the door with free samples of their product. They were very proactive at trying to create users. Which is their business but still.

I don't think it should be an issue. If they want to sponsor our sport more power to them. If all the energy drink money suddenly vanished and the AMA had no money to run I'm sure they would change the policy real quick.

Fortunately Energy drinks are not going away, do you see starbucks going away? Older people use coffee to satisfy their addiction, younger people find energy drinks taste better with a lot more sugar and with better marketing and introduction of vitamins, it even sounds healthier.

But who knows, the liberals are trying to pound McDonalds and other fast foods, wanting to tax them because they are not good for us. Energy drinks are actually worse so you never know.

Smoking will never come back at least in the current for, perhaps the nicotine vapor cigs might be ok but again I think that is ATF/FDA.

Surf had a pretty decent run with Jeff Glass... and he wasn't a huge name. But "everyone" in the sport bought Surf thanks to him. I would think with the growing popularity, you might see more mainstream brands looking to jump into sponsorship. In this economy, it may be that they don't want to jump in full blast and take the "risk" but who knows? Maybe nobody has approached them with the right opportunity? Plus, our market is small compared to the likes of NASCAR... you already see sponsors backing away from NASCAR, so what's the real benefit of sponsoring MX/SX to them in the long run?

Would be cool, not like these pure sugar "energy" drinks are much better for you..

If this team was still around I would be a huge supporter. Anyone remember that ez wider yamaha team? Surprised emig didn't ride for them. Think I have a poster still floating around somewhere

You'd think a detergent maker would be able to leverage MX and washing mud and dirt out of gear (which detergent will get this red Oklahoma dirt out of this white gear with cold water gentle cycle?) and market in the sport, but I really think their brand managers see Monster girls, Rockstar girls, lasers, smoke, and loud deep Monster-truck announcers, and say, "No, our housewife demographic won't go for that."

You have to say this louder and with more emphasis. Seems most don't understand this is the case.

The government has banned tobacco from sponsoring any sporting events of any kind in any manner. Tobacco companies also are not permitted to advertise on TV. Anyone seen a tobacco company advertising on TV lately?

You would think with all the dirty moto gear out there a laundry detergent company would be all over it lol. I can tell you though, my parents own an appliance store and we get samples all the time and some definitely work better than others. But to the point i think motocross and laundry detergent would go hand in hand.
