Adolf Weil ???

Dont know any more detail, but sad news indeed. He was the original Paul Newman of MX. Raced well into his 40's. Godspeed a great racer.

Adolf Weil died one week ago in his hometown Solingen/Germany at the age of 72. He was one of the best German Motocrosser and called "the smoothest rider" . 14 times German Champion, Vice World Champion and Trans AMA Champion in 1973, all on Maico., raced with Roger de Coster, Bengt Aberg etc.. Remember watching him racing the World Championship in Bielstein in the seventies.

Anyone who had a bike named after them definitely was moto royalty. The AW Maicos were some of the most beautiful pieces of machinery ever. RIP.

The Paul Newman of Motocross...RIP Mr. Weil. I wish I could've met you.

I agree with Newman. I have also said the same thing about the AW Maicos. As a kid in the 70's, I remember siting and admiring my Dad's AW and how beautiful it was.

I am also very sorry to hear about Adolph's passing. He seemed to live a rather quiet existence after his racing days, and I am sorry that we didn't get to hear more from him about a great period in MX history.

Such a bummer. Growing up in Germany, I spent a year traveling the GP's with Adolf and my Dad when I was just a kid.

thank you for your condolences and for all your kind comments!

My father in law was born Dec 25 in 1938 and died May 12 this year.
His dead was absolutely unexpected, he was in good constitution and stood
in his business until his last day. He wanted to retire at the end of this year to
go on some vacations.
We still have not realized that he is definitely not with us anymore and can't do,
what he planned to do.

After his career he opened a motorcycle-business in 1975 and focused
completly on his new profession, selling Maico and Kawasaki-Motorcycles.
His two sons, Frank, born in 1959, and my husband Jürgen, born in 1960, helped him from
the beginning and are still running the company

Of course he did sports, he played tennis and he loved sailing very much.
Unfortunately his wife Heike died, much too young, in 2002 in the age of only 60.

We need time to sort out some nice pictures, to fill the empty spaces in wikipedia
and other websites, so he will never be forgotten!

I am very sorry for you family's loss. Thank you for taking the time to join here and to leave that great post. I am certain all here would be greatly interested in all further writings and pictures that your family might be able to provide in the future. I remember Adolf very well. Goodspeed and Rest In Peace Mr. Weil.

He was my very first motocross hero! Fantastic career and a fantastic human being. He was the smoothest rider to ever grace a motocross track. He cemented my love affair with Maico's, for sure.

Good speed Alolf Weil. It was an honor to watch you race.

Your father -in-law was a super star in the minds of many young up and coming racers. Me included.

I've watched him race at Unadilla and later was on the track with him before he retired.

I just spoke to my father, Stuart Peters, also 72, he raced against your father-in-law in the 60's in Europe, he said he had pictures, results and articles with Adolf in them, I'll get them together and forward them on to you as well. Sorry for your family's loss.
