Regardless of who wins (by the way congrats to lil Deegan BTW), how is this Super Motocross thing a world championship?  The series never leaves the Continental United States.

With the only way to qualify to race the “World Championship” is the race a US national or regional series 🤷‍♂️

...then how can  MXGP claim to be a World Championship?

It hasn't come to the USA for quite a few years now...

I think Feld and the AMA created their own unique hybrid MX/SX series - it is the only one on the planet that I know of.

There is no other series quite like the 2023 version of AMA SuperMotocross, so I think they can call it a world championship in this discipline until another series copies the exact same format?

Yeah, I don't really care I'm just pointing it out, it's a common thread amongst US sports leagues to call their events "World", so calling SMX world championship is nothing new and nothing to be worked up about.

Are you taking the piss with that comment lol?

Pretty sure MXGP is international and if it doesn't come to USA I don't see how that changes the fact.

Ha the supporting amateurs were called the World All Stars, yet there was one international rider out of three classes.
Between WSX and SMX it’s gotten that ridiculous that it’s not even worth worrying about anymore.

The brain drain trust here believes because riders come here to race it makes it a world championship.

as a regular thinking American this is patently false.

Same way some tiny greasy spoon diner on a deserted highway lists their meatloaf as “world famous” on the menu…

There are 198 (approximately) countries in the world, the USA is one of those... The MXGP series doesn't have to go to 198 countries, and the USA (which contributes 1 rider to the series) isn't any more important than Morocco.

Same way Vialle was a 'World' champion before he ever raced against almost every single rider found on his AMA gates this past year. You can brand things pretty much any way you want to.

Because Murica. Without the WSX, the super mega lame championship name would never have been thought of.

The FIA Formula 1 Championship didn't race in the US between 2008 and 2011, I that means that Lewis Hamilton is a 6 time F1 "World" Champion  and the 2008 European F1 champion, Button is also the 2009 European F1 Champion, and so on...

The nationals don't go to every state in the U.S yet it is called a National Championship!

SMX Does not got to every state in the U.S yet it is elevated to not a national championship, but a WORLD Championship.

Haha, but who really cares, the Tri State SMX Series produced some of the best racing of the year, end of the day that is all we want to see.

If having athletes from around the World is what makes a championship a "World Championship", then the Spanish, Portuguese, British, French, Italian... and pretty much every Football (Or as americans call it, soccer) leagues are World Championships.

Oh! BTW, Herlings, De Wolf, Lucas Coenen and Prado raced rounds of the Spanish Motocross Championship, therefore is a World Championship, so... Jose Butron is a Motocross World Champion then.

The football world cup, or Rugby world cup, are world championships, not the 'world' baseball series.  They are finals made up of countries (that is, nation states) from all over the world, not franchises from various American cities.

I try to stay away from these kinds of threads... but I 100% agree.

These constant reminding of World Championship, and the urge to remind everyone there is a Frenchman, Japanese, someone from South America etc...

Just silly! Almost a bit (dare I say) unintelligenty stupid narrow minded.

Btw, MXGP is also silly, it's the Euro series with a few foreigners, Sx/Nationals/Smx is the North American series with a few foreigners etc.

I would say it's only a World Series/Championship when the top5 from every continent elect to race same series, thus, in dirt biking there is nothing "World".

Thinking of it, can it be a World Championship if its only done on one continent but no one practices the same sport elsewhere? I think it can, since then there is no question where the best is. Sushi eating contest in Japan, Wife carrying contest in Finland haha... The problem arises when same sport is competed in on a high level in separate parts of the world.

NBA? Are the basketball players world champions or 'only' the very best in NBA?

it really comes down to sanctioning bodies. Forgive me as I don't know the exact regulatory makeup of the SuperMotocross championship.

the FIM is the global sanctioning body, thus dictate what has FIM World Championship Status. It's the same with the FIA and F1 (and the various other FIA World Championships). I think the American Motorsport Association Pro Racing, which is as far as I can tell just a National Governing Body announcing something as a  World Championship status is a bit of a stretch. I assume the FIM have no sanctioning authority over it thus they can do what they want.

Anyway, a global governing body sanctioning a World Championship is fine, even if limited in geography (FIA World Karting Champs is mostly a one-weekend affair), but a NGB calling something that is exclusively held in one country with no suggestion of going elsewhere ever is a bit of a stretch.
