Seeing kennys insta story of his new pair of instincts in the blue and white colorway popped a question in my head. How are these pros so comfortable wearing brand new boots every weekend? Is there some sort of secret boot breaking in method that us average guys dont know about? Riding in a new pair of boots always sucks for me, cant feel where my feet are at and always have a hard time flexing a new boot just to shift the damn bike. Probably takes me a good 6 rides for new boots to bed in
Just in the same way we get used to having boots with flex and feel, they get used to having boots that are stiff with minimal feel.
Instincts are about the easiest to throw on new and feel comfortable. Tech 7s were close but not quite. No idea how them guys do it with gaernes and tech 10s. I hated the feel of new tech 10s so bad i wore them for one practice session then bought tech 7s. I was a long time instinct wearer before that and only switched because of stigmas of wearing fly gear n fox boots lol..
Their boots are not off the shelf boots that us common rabble purchase. Theirs are custom fit/made.
They will usually ride in them before the race weekend but really with tech 10's they need very little break in anymore before they are good. I've also heard of guys having their wives/mechanic/man friend walk around in them a bit to break them in too. I've taken them out of the box and raced and couldn't really tell a difference between them and my older pairs.
The Shop
I can put on brand new tech 10s & go race right away. The newer generation boots are no where near as stiff & restrictive as they used to be 10-15 years ago.
also I get new boots quite frequently so I don’t really let them get too worn out so maybe that helps.
Tech tens feel good after like few sessions of riding, but like Nick above I get new boots often before they get too worn out, I need stiffer boots.
that being said most pros are wearing them for day before the race
Recall that it was revealed that Tomac (and several other dudes) had boots customized to remove the motion limiting features for more flexibility due to the stiffness of new boots, and we all only took note of it when Eli blew out his achilles.
I loved my Gaernes.
im no pro... but going from my tech 7s to my tech 10dhcp's the 10s are so damn stiff.. im like 10 rides in on them and they're still mega stiff
I heard there is a man that walks around in them to break them in, and even offers to clean them for free
I must be in the minority also as I actually prefer Tech 10's right out of the box. Normally rotating between 2-3 pairs to prolong their life and always replacing them well before the soles wear out..
I'm good to go with Gaerne's right out of the box. It was a change going from Astars to Gaerne at first but now going older Gaerne boot to newer Gaerne boot is no issue for me. As long as I have the right size, I'm good to go.
Sidi’s straight out of the box here. So comfortable.
Each rider has someone on their entourage that wears their new boots "in", usually the same guy does boxer shorts and gloves.
I agree the instincts r perfect . I didn’t ride for 12 yrs + bikes were stolen. I never adjusted the buckles just threw them on . Then jumped everything the 1st lap without walking the track. Profeshenal like. lol. I do where evs ankle braces . Best feeling boot & best feel for shifter.
That’s because they are just a stiffer boot. Try riding on the balls of your feet more and they will flex more and you’ll get better feel on the bike.
Beat them with a lump hammer. Seriously.
Read the same thing concerning Mr. Tomac's injury, many pro riders do not wear production boots.
Pit Row
I think Id find a way to manage if someone gave me new boots every weekend. Suffering for the cause
I noticed Levi had on some random bright yellow boots on at the practice track in a clip on IG and was wondering why the hell he has bright ass yellow boots with green gear then that weekend Fox did the all yellow kit in San Fran.
Just my guess on new boots out of the box. The stress a pro suppercross rider puts on a pair of books in a few laps is far more than the average rider in a few laps. That and those guys are used to wearing new boots.
Tech 7’s seem good right out of the box. I have a pair of SIDI’s so stiff I wore them a couple of laps and took them off, another one of my on sale deals I couldn’t pass up. I bet they’ve been on the shelf now for 3 years. I need to give them another go and break them in. Also have a pair of Leatt 5.5’s I got on close out for cheap that I’ve tried on but haven’t worn at the track. They seem stiff as a board too. It’s hard for me to get away from wearing anything but tech 7’s.
I had to google lump hammer. All this time I thought I knew all there was to know about hammers.
Lump Hammers are used for striking chisels to break blocks or for light demolition work. They are usually double-faced and have a wooden or resin handle. This is an important tool for builders.
Do you do the lump hammer thing with boots off or on…………I’m thinking on!
And now everyone looking at the Tech-10's the Pros are wearing this year, there's a LOT less guys running the flexible versions. A lot more stock boots out there now.
Stiff boots are safer.
1) Boots off
2) Strike foot with hammer until properly tenderized
3) Foot should now conform in shape easily to any boot interior.
For Fox, those things are pretty flexible and have a ton of feel brand new. For the Astars, the riders who prefer more flex get custom ones, and the riders that like stiffer boots just run the stockers. As wwdiii pointed out, the force on their feet is pretty high, makes sense why many riders would be fine with new Tech 10s. I like the confidence they give you to ride on the balls of your feet and slam into things. I do miss the feeling of Instincts, though, mostly when shifting.
Indeed, FOX makes custom boots for some of their riders.
I'm not sure if all their riders get such a treatment, but from the first hand, I know that Gajser's boots were custom molded per his foot width/length.
Boot bitches break them in. Tech 10's are stiff at first but you just walk around the house for a week before riding and they are good to go. Never had to do that with my Fox Intstincts though.
Oh definitely, I'm sure it's the top tier of pros that get this treatment. I remember watching a video long time ago of one of the pros going to the factory and having molds made of his feet/legs and how ecstatic he was.
I would love to have brand new boots for every time I ride. I love the feel, or lack of feel. My foot size limits me to Alpinestars . Maybe other brands are harder to get used to.
But the other thing is that they are used to having fresh boots all the time. Just like many people are used to having worn out boots. And sometimes the boots are customized for the rider.
Me too.
