I doubt the average American realizes just how poisonous it really is; I switched to keto like 6 months ago, and on the occasional "cheat days" (Thanksgiving, Christmas) it reminds me how awful I felt when I was eating the Standard American Diet.  Keto, vegan, vegetarian, carnivore...virtually any of those is better than the S.A.D. diet....it's no wonder we have an obesity and Type II diabetes epidemic in this country....

Shop around the perimeter of the grocery store and go up one tooth on the rear sprocket.  We’re all set for 2023!

All kidding aside, that was a good article.  Thanks for sharing.

Strangely timed for me as one of my key goals for 23 is avoiding sugar as much as possible.

Meanwhile James Stewart mentions drinking sugar water and eating donuts when he was at his peak almost every pod

Odd timing, I was just perusing a fascinating article in The New England Journal Of Medicine, regarding motorcycle sprockets. They recommend increasing by two teeth in the rear and, proper torquing.

I need a longer chain.

I’ve been experimenting with my diet for the last two years. The single biggest change occurred when I stopped drinking sugar-laden drinks. I feel better and my weight doesn’t fluctuate much.

Robert H. Lustig is an American pediatric endocrinologist. He is Professor emeritus of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology at the University of California, San Francisco, where he specialized in neuroendocrinology and childhood obesity

I watched this years ago, changed my thinking on sugar choices and I have felt better for it:

I’ve been experimenting with my diet for the last two years. The single biggest change occurred when I stopped drinking sugar-laden drinks. I feel better and my weight doesn’t fluctuate much.

I started Mtn Bike Racing when I was 40 or so. That is when I ended my love affair with sugar. Best decision I ever made.

I've included in that change, processsed foods (to a major extent), flour, canned goods, minimal dary, and meats that have been to a Meat Plant! Plus other crap........

I also daily take Shilajit....an earth based mineral from high in the mountains around the world.

My diet could be noted as bit boring, however coupled with lots of activity, lots of water and all natural smoothies, I feel great.

I'm 70, 5' 8" and weight the same as when I was drafted in 1971.

Our health is in my view our number one asset and I have every intention to ride for as many more years as possible.

Shilajit is a pale-brown to blackish-brown exudation, of variable consistency, exuding from layers of rocks in many mountain ranges of the world, especially the Himalayas and Hindukush ranges of the Indian subcontinent. It has been found to consist of a complex mixture of organic humic substances and plant and microbial metabolites occurring in the rock rhizospheres of its natural habitat. Shilajit has been used as a rejuvenator and an adaptogen for thousands of years, in one form or another, as part of traditional systems of medicine in a number of countries. Many therapeutic properties have been ascribed to it, a number of which have been verified by modern scientific evaluation. Shilajit has been attributed with many miraculous healing properties.

Sugar consumption without effort is the problem.  Endurance athletes need carbs and some sugar is actually very good, especially right after a hard effort for recovery and during longer efforts (more than 90 min).  The sugar and carbs you consume is converted into energy you need during those longer efforts.  Now, this does not apply if you walk/run on the treadmill for 20 minutes.   It's just like everything else, moderation and timing is critical.  Don't eat a giant bowl of ice cream and then go to sleep, but chocolate whole milk combined with some quality protein powder after a hard workout is awesome.  Fruit is also excellent and when combined with a protein provides your body the combination of food/snack that fuels it best.

I have to be careful with fruit.  Some of it - like grapes - will send me into a sugar coma.

My departed father, Dr. Peter Lewis Pellett, was a world renowned nutritionist and expert on amino acids, anyway, his life’s passion and work was solving Third World Hunger…..He was often asked advice on proper diet, his words were quite simple; Variety and moderation.

You’re trying real hard to start an argument that’s unrelated to this thread.

Just kicked the hornets nest. This should be good.. let the vitriol commence.

Mostly in the US yes, hence why Europe has banned all those American products.  Unfortunately nearly all farms in the US produce low grade genetically altered animals that are raised on a chemical concoction.

Hmmm yummy........

I'd argue it's very much related. He's spouting the supposed horrors of sugar, while he looks like he's one pork chop away from a stroke or a heart attack. People in the country find it easy to vilify sugar, because it's a scapegoat. Not too hard to cut out most processed sugar, but let's not pay any attention to what's causing the majority of the colon cancer, diabetes, and heart disease in this country and around the world. Because cutting out most to all animal products is definitely a step too far..

Good lord anti-meat crusaders are truly one of the most insufferable groups of people on this planet.

Too much of anything will fuck a guy up. Sugar, carbs, salt, meat, alcohol, preservatives. Just eat a little of everything.

I’ve tried multiple times to completely cut sugar out of my diet and it’s super hard. I definitely felt withdrawal symptoms. It’s also in a ton of food that you wouldn’t expect.

I’ve been vegan for a while and that is a million times easier than eliminating sugar from my diet.

...add to that list refined flour products - white bread, hamburger buns, Hawaiian Sweet rolls,  etc. Little to no fiber, protein, or nutritional content in that shit. if you want to lose weight, this is the single most impactful item to cut from your diet.

If you have to eat bread, eat whole grain products.

I have cut out white bread. But since I love sandwiches, I am having a hard time finding lunch meat that isn't processed.

Good on ya, you don't need to eliminate sugar from your diet dude, that's all bullshit. We thrive on sugar from whole plants: fruits and grains for the win. A dessert at night with white sugar in it is nothing to worry about at all.
