I don't know how much the broadcast showed him, but I was there today. I watched Eli like a hawk in qualifying, heats, main. The track looked amazing all the way through qualifying #2, but it was progressively drying out. Eli didn't look as fast in the heat as in qualifying but the track wasn't absolutely gone yet. But the sun came out for an hour plus and after the 250 main in particular you could see the track was so shiny and baked—it was 100% incompatible with a scoop tire. Staying with the scoop after the track deterioration was an absolute fail. I’m always amazed when riders get so hooked on something, they can’t see the forest for the trees…

Purely conjecture, but this seems like a classic case of hiring a guy because he has the right experience and knowledge, and then refusing to ACTUALLY listen to him. Hopefully he goes on one of the podcasts and tells all.

The Immortals of American Motocross By Larry Lawrence. I am sure his list will be open for discussion. For example as an OG MXer, I would include Brad Lackey here, maybe Jim Pomeroy over say, Kent Howerton. BUT, always good to see a new well-done MX book. $27 on Amazon.

The 02 was wildly different than what is in that picture. In the pic it’s an 01 with an electronic EV I assume. But still 01 frame, engine cases (no reed intake in the cases), cylinder (curious to know if the exhaust valve layout was like in the 02 already or still like the 92-01), geometry and bodywork. I wonder how different they must have felt and how much validity it brought him.

Found these while doomscrolling social media. Pretty cool trip down memory lane. Might be a “we landed on the moon?” moment for me but I’ve never seen these pics before. Caption: Three photos from Labor Day 2001, the day after the Steel City National: Ricky Carmichael’s first ride on the Honda CR250, the day after he won the Steel City 125 National and then switched from Team Kawasaki to Team Honda, under the watchful eye of his mother Jeanie, who already had her stopwatch out!
