Anyone know of any cool motocross related science fair ideas? Looking for a cool project and I want to represent the moto community!

Just copy any of the Science of Supercross presented by Kawasaki.

Homework done, more time for riding.

Something as it relates to moto and the physical demands. I know it's been done a million times but maybe something that can break it down along the lines of how it stacks up to something that people can relate to - like burbees. As in "doing a 35 minute moto is the equivalent of doing 5,000 burbees" or whatever.

I also recall by, I think, University of Pittsburgh that said moto was different in that not only were there the physical demands but the dexterity (shift, brake, throttle, etc.) at the same time that set it apart from other sports and added a complexity that was hard to measure.

Or maybe the science behind a beautiful bar drag!

I think you should do a demo showing how Rotella T is the best oil for your motocross bike

Right? I thought there was no scientific basis for it or something...

How a clutch works!

How a transmission works! With some kind of breakdown/demonstration of gear ratios and forward drive

I think this could be interesting and easy. Maybe put the 3 types of fuel into a container and let it evaporate, observing what was left behind? Hell, I may do this at home...

You could cut a small section out of a couple different old tires with various levels of wear (maybe around 4 in each), and set a control weight on each one. Then, using an inexpensive spring scale or fishing scale, drag each tire section through a controlled area of sand to show how much knobby wear makes a difference with traction. The less worn tires will obviously take more force to pull, the question is how significant is the difference?

Just a cheap and dirty idea, I’m sure there’s plenty of others.

We did heart rates at different tracks/conditions. But he's also only 12

physical demands would be cool. could do a demo where you have a heart rate monitor and you have them do an exercise like burpees stationary bike or whatever and get there heart rate up to 80-90% then extrapolate/compare that to a 30 min moto or whatever

Right! I think the sky is the limit in that sense. We were surprised at the range of heart rates for different conditions.

Another route to look into is the physical inputs a rider uses to control the bike itself. Not as far as basic operation, but more in depth. Say, the scrub for example. Or, the brake tap to drop a front end in flight..... Many of the things we use for performance on the track that enhance the bikes performance qualities. Another thought would be an easy one, the holeshot device. That alone would be a cool display, either have a bike on site, or a single fork leg with a device installed for demo purposes. Have various pics, or a video, showing the pros and cons with or without one. Ties in various factors which you already know to why it's used, easy to apply science to this alone......
Let your imagination run wild, good luck!

How and why the backwards Yamaha engine has effected the careers of those who have tried and failed to master it.
