Keys to success for Webb:

1.Get a bike helmet (safety first)
2.Get running shoes
3.Dig for $1599.00 between his couch cushions

Starting at 53 seconds, look how this guy is able to maintain great control going through that rutted whoops section.

I do, he tells some very good things in his posts on instagram too. I know, sometimes it is a little too much. But most of the times the things he says are true. He is not the only one saying that by the way.

Every year our team (a regional team for young riders. We all train and ride together) has a training clinic from a professional rider. I've had a training clinic from Joel Smets a few years ago, the first thing he told me was that I had to ride on my toes and not flat footed, not bad from a 5 times world champion right? The year after we had a training clinic from Bobryshev, first thing he told us was riding on our toes was one was one of the most important and most forgotten thing in motorcross. The years afterwards we have had De Reuver, Van Horebeek and this year Coldenhoff and Getteman and riding on your toes is the thing that is one of the most important thing to them. Same goes for not using your rear brake in a corner to keep your bike rolling and keep your toes on your outside peg, just like Roczen and Dungey do.

His theories about neckbraces are interesting too, but please don't start another debate on this Laughing
I personally think that riding on your toes is the way to go. On account of you reduce the risk of ripping your foot off riding in ruts and twisting your knee, or if your a crazy 16 year old you won't rip your foot off the peg while scrubbing and Zach bell yourself. I just don't think it's the only way to ride. I think you can be a champion in this sport with what ever makes you comfortable going fast as F. On your toes or on your arches. Ryno is comical.

I challenge you to get on your mountain bike and go for a spirited trail ride, pedaling only with your heels.

Ryno is an intelligent guy. Always has been. But the thing about smart motherfuckers, is they seem like crazy motherfuckers to dumb motherfuckers. Now read the replies in this thread again.
Riding a mtb is irrelevant as well. How much do they weigh 10lbs? How much horse power are they producing? You're also pedaling up and down with bicycle cranks. Of course riding on your heels would be a dildo move. We're talking about the greatest racers in the world. Racing 200 lb machines. Engines that produce 50hp for a 250f and 65-70 hp for a 450. These dudes are trying to keep the front end down while holding it wide effing open. These elite pros do what ever it takes to win. Some like to be on their toes. The fastest man on the planet (js7) and Champion Cooper Webb prefer riding flat footed. It's what ever makes you or them comfy riding at crazy speeds. I challenge you to take a 200lb 70hp factory 450 , crack it wide open, stick your butt out, get on your toes and film it for us. So we can see that perfect form. Do a downward dog while your at it.

Haha, comedy gold. I do think the one-footed flying Nazi salute is a bit over the top, though.

Also, if you're going to train on one of these, at least wear the proper safety gear. Looping out in the garage and landing on the dumbbell rack at zero miles per hour is no joke.

When Ryno mentioned how he gave Dunge some advice and it immediately worked I almost turned off the podcast. I don't dislike Ryno but to me there is an imbalance between his level of humility and his credentials.

Ryno said that Webb rides flat footed and tries to make too much happen with his arms. Thinks he needs to ride on his toes more along with using his legs better to get the bike to do what he wants. he mad a couple interesting observations about the changes in Roczen and Dungeys riding posture over the last few years also.

I'm pretty sure James Stewart didn't give a crap about riding flat footed when he won his championships. Im pretty sure Cooper Webb gave 0 about riding flat footed when he won all three of his championships. I think Ryno has to many hours logged in with a higher state of mind. Cooper is a winner and a champion. Cooper is gonna be great once he figures out the 450, regardless of "unlocking the hips" or "riding flat footed".
Stew used to ride on his toes in his 125 days and he hinged his hips, rode more like villopotos style, butt back, head forward and low.

His technical form slacked over the years as he went forward on the 450, largely I feel because he is so naturally gifted that he can do things however he wants and make it work. I think the 450 also changed his style to ride more upright and forward at all times, somewhat like windham did.

James still hinges his hips while standing better than most, and shifts his weight far forward when landing or when he is on the gas in a manner that I think is awesome. He leads the bike with his upper body a lot.

Dungeys style clearly evolved when he went to aldon. He looks to hinge more and sits less upright. He is good about his toes, and always has pretty darn good elbows (which dv, febre, and forkner make a case isnt needed)

All the top pros do things very few amatuers do, there are times while sitting their head is over the middle of front fender... not many people hit that position

These guys ride with their feet in many different positions at any point in time. Flat footed or on your toes is dumb. They are all doing both depending on the corner, obstacle, etc. they go by feel and comfort. It's second nature. Not something they even think about.

Coop almost won the MXDN on the 450cc. He was captain for a reason. He knows how to ride a 450. He's had two SX races on it so far. Everyone calm down. He may suck all year at SX. It happens to rookies sometimes.

Come back off the ledge and let the rookie learn SX on the 450. I'm sure he will do just fine at MX providing he is healthy and gels with the bike.

He's a proven commodity and will be just fine. A career is a marathon and not a sprint and he's having a good career so far. He's learning SX on the big bike and is struggling like a lot of rookies do.

Just reading this thread, the idea that jumped to my mind is how 5, 94, 25, and some others seem to use their legs to work the bike through rhythm sections and such more often these days. I have been told ride on toes and to ride flat by diff pros giving lessons. I move my feet alot, depending on obstacle. ( i am slow af too tho!) as for 7, i recall reading articles about his style years ago and the writers all talked about how he would keep his head forward, leaning from center of bike. Hips unlocked? Looking back on my better results, the wins came when i was riding more aggressively and not sitting straight up. Straight up posture usually happens when im tired and or out of shape. But, alas I am a spode, a member of the untalented masses, sitting in awe of even local pros, and flabbergasted at the ability of national pros. One last thing, i think Hughes has good ideas, but like anyone he doesnt have all the good ideas for everyone

I understand your point, but the original person who said this was technically getting scammed by the "smart motherfucker"...

I took lessons with mike healey in the early 2000's, then again with donnie hansen and they kept drilling me about riding on the balls of my feet. It actually helped me a lot once I got used to it.

Side note- Donnie was using Josh as an example for everyone to watch after he would talk about a technique. While donnie would be talking to us, josh would sit there and look around the track for random transfer jumps. He would suddenly kick his bike over and start rolling around then you would see him launch off some berm, over a section of the track, and land somewhere sketchy. After about the third time, donnie went over to him and smacked him upside the helmet and told him to stop being an idiot.

I agree with you. Webb is already a way more successful racer then Hughes ever was. Just want to point that out.

also, when Webb was a flying mad man in the 250F ranks, no one was saying shit about his technique.
