Hello,
I am looking to possibly buy a yz250 and I wont be too happy if I buy a yz250 which seems to only be refined annually I dont want yam to redesign the frame or release direct injection......etc

so my question is what do you members think will be in the yz's future?

thanks,
-Bryce

My guess is they'll leave it be for as long as possible. But now they're bring back the wr and making the yzx. So maybe that long as possible, is now.

Judging from its past 10 years not much. That said it would be great to see Yamaha do some r&d(aside from updating the plastic) on their 2stroke line. Everyone I know that rides them loves them so if they do change them hopefully they don't mess up a good bike.
If you like the current platform then I'd suggest get one while you know it's what you want. I'm betting things won't change much, but you never know.

I'd say you're safe as houses mate.

Alternatively you could get one that is a few years older that is pimped up–2006 up it's basically the same bike.

Why would they radically update it? They already sell every one they make.

They could make more ..........then sell more........that is what they are in business to do.

And they have added the "X" off road models. But it would take a rule change to get them exposure to really take off again.

True, they did make the X but that is not a radical redesign, its a transmission, kick stand, and an 18" rear wheel. I am happy to see Yamaha going in that direction, but its not a redesigned frame or DI like the original poster was worrying about.

Is it electric start?

No, it is literally a 5 speed wide ratio transmission, a kick stand, and an 18" rear wheel, otherwise its your standard YZ250, which is not a bad thing.

I'd say unlikely to see many changes like frame, engine, suspension.
They know what they have is a very good bike already, regardless of its age,it's still very competitive. I actually prefer it over the European 2strokes.
They could possibly make it better by putting the old steel frame back on.

The YZ-X has lower compression, and different valving in the suspension, from what I read. And it has a reserve on the gas tank. Silly

2017-2018 I think we will see a new YZ line as well as a 65... That's coming from a Yamaha development guy I met through the Yamaha dealership I work at

Plans change though. Yamaha has a 150f like the honda that never saw the light of day.

Mate your source is good I heard from someone that would definately know although he didn't 100% say yes he did say he was informed that this is a definate Direction of Yamaha. They need to get back the mini crowd as KTM have family's pretty much on hook from 50cc to 150cc. Yam say it's hard to gain people away from KTM as they already have a good relationship with there KTM dealer through them buying at least 3 bikes by the time they look at a Yam.

As a brand making a break into a new market, you gotta start somewhere! On the other hand, how many parents do you think there are that have a kid on the mini bikes (ktm predominately) and have had bad experiences with KTM. We have kids coming off ktms all the time just fangin to get on a yz85 despite being the older bike. Some people have had enough of orange two strokes after a few years. Also, every kid starts racing on KTMs but they all learnt to ride on a PW first

Yes true but they have at least 5 yrs before looking at a blue bike. With he horsepower advantage the orange bike has as well parents are ignoring reliability. I for one will be hanging to get my boy on a YZ65 when it comes out. McFuck I'd probably pre order one.

They probably never released the 150 because it was too heavy for your average 12 year old (the story with crf150 is it's too heavy and hard to start). Power to weight ratio would have been a problem since the 150 also lacks power. So for Yamaha to start developing mass centralised motocross bikes, and more specifically, the most powerful 250f out of the crate, I certainly think that a YZ150f is still in development

Yamaha is 100% behind the slanted rules against 2-strokes in Pro MX.. Makes you question their motives, it doesn't sound like they are very invested in 2-strokes going forward. It's great that they still sell them but I wouldn't expect much from them unless the other manufacturers besides KTM force their hand.

They're gonna have to do a major revision someday. Right? I mean, if they keep them in their line-up. At some point they're gonna have to do something.

I agree that the machine is very refined at this point, but a major revision has to be in the plans - if the 2-stroke MX bikes are in their long-range plans. If not, then all bets are off.

They will probably produce it forever, out of guilt for unleashing four strokes on us all

I sure see a TON of YZ250 two strokes at the desert races. Its a hugely popular off road bike. Everyone hates the KTM 4CS forks, and a lot of people are buying the Yamaha instead.

Outside of DI...and maybe air forks (which, I'm not certain, would be better than the KYB SSS forks on the bike already)...how much more R&D could they do on the bike? Hydrolic clutch? (That isn't even on their four strokes) Electric start?

If you want hydraulic clutch and e start buy a ktm i like the lightness and symplicity of a japanese 2 stroke. Hopefully it stays that way with a little r and d on the chassis.

They could update the transmission design and compact the motor making it smaller and lighter weight like they did to the 125. Newer ergo's with the rads a little lower with a sight lower gas tank / flatter seat area.

Good question, considering how easy and cheap it is to do some porting/head work and buy a reed and pipe to eliminate the KTM's hp advantage.
