I had heard it said back in the early eighties (after the Japanese had virtually sole possession of the sport) that the Japanese manufacturers rotated the championship among themselves.

Was it true? I don't know but when the Japanese started drafting U.S. baseball players into then new Japanese league the U.S. players complained that none of Japanese teams really wanted to be dominate; they wanted to play for a tie. They'd then stifle the U.S. players efforts so that would then happen. So maybe it's in their nature to do so.

There has been more than one privateer spout off about it being a boys club and certain outcomes are pre determined. Wether true or not, who knows. But i have personally heard it several times from different racers over the years. I always chalked it up to them not putting in the effort and being sore losers.

Hope it isnt something more than what they heard.
