The fact is that FMF is one of the most recognizable logos in the sport and they would be foolish not to capitalize on that. How much more market share of the pipe market do you think they can get? They already are by far the leader and there's no reason to think that not having their pipe on factory Kawi's bikes will change that.
Counter that with the possibility of doing well in the energy drink field, which is still growing and in which they currently have zero market share. Oh yeah, energy drinks aren't a niche product, like aftermarket pipes are. The La Jolla Group, who is no doubt behind this new venture, is one of the best of the best at marketing and wouldn't put Emler into a loser deal.
You are so quick to badmouth a couple of guys you don't know, based on jealousy and because you saw them in a pic with Scott Sepkovic one time? Just about everyone in the industry has had pics taken with Scott at one time or another, big deal. Also, did you know that DC and Sepkovic are old buddies from way back when Scott lived in PA? You gonna talk smack about Coombs now?
Sometimes you assholes need to think before you write...
this isn't Donny Sr or Jr thinking they will just slap their logo on a can and it will magically sell. There are some very successfull people (non MX) behind the energy drink who know what they are doing.
yes, maybe they will lose some sponsorhips or other relationships on the "pipe only" side, like with factory kawasaki...but no one has mentioned the new possibilities of sponsorship on a more major level that the drink side may now bring to the table. Along with the new clothing deal, i think they are making some big moves. time will tell.
Yes the energy drink market is big, but it is also flooded with thousands of no name's that want the same thing that FMF wants--a piece of the pie. However, the problem is that there is a lot more to selling a product than just branding. My guess is, a sales savvy opportunist in the beverage industry convinced the Elmers that their branding would have a great spill-over effect (pardon the pun) and sell with their image on a can. Unfortunately, most of us already know that you need distribution before you're going to see any reasonable returns (especially on a licensing deal), and the big 3 already have a dominant hold on that aspect of the beverage market. Even if you had a great sales force who will go door-to-door, very few bars, grocery, or c-stores will carry their stuff because they already know what sells--the big 3.
I've been around moto since i was a kid, but i've learned a lot over the last few years that moto is SO FAR out of the main stream its not funny, i would have thought FMF would have a broader business outlook than that. If they think regular teenagers and twenty something year old kids know what FMF is, or even what motocross really is (and not just guys doing backflips), they are so wrong. While i think the idea of an FMF energy drink is cool, and id totally buy it (because i'm moto all the way), i'm still shocked at this attempt.

Lightning78, i see your point about them starting the drink well before the SX season, but as has been stated in numerous interviews earlier in the season, the deal with Kawasaki and FMF was done right before the season started. They noticed immediate weight, sound and power advantages and went with the better exhaust for their race bikes. Simple as that. Also, to any keen observer, the lack of fmf logos or signage on the Kawi race bikes, semi, or team shirts should probably give an indication to the level of their relationship.
