I apologize for another Chase Sexton article but I built a few tables comparing Sexton's career on different manufacturers. Full article on my site as always here: Sexton Spotlight

Interesting stats as always, although the Honda figures obviously include his rookie year, which was a bit all over the place, as rookies tend to be. Remembering that no one expected Sexton to be as good on a 450 as he turned out to be. While by the time he went to KTM he was an established front runner.
First year KTM vs Kawi results could be telling.

By every metric he was better on KTM. Many say he was fastest on the Honda, but there doesn’t seem to be credible evidence of this.

He went from 40th to first at Hangtown in 24’. That’s the second round of the series. Almost everyone was still healthy except for Jet crashing in moto 1 that day. My brother was there and called me on the phone the second the moto ended in disbelief at what he had witnessed. He was also at the LA colosseum in 87’ when Rick Johnson went down in the first turn and came back to win. Two most impressive rides he has seen in 50 years of attending races.

Who has defeated a healthy Jet? Nobody. Chase on a KTM is one of the only to beat him straight up in any kind of race. Chase handled Hunter with relative ease before switching to Kawasaki. On any given day, he is the second best rider in the world.

Honda was a learning period, stats are skewed because Chase was a better rider when he got on the KTM, not specifically because the bike was better.

Can you make a stat for how much of his career / time he’s wasted on his petty team switching stuff? He’s sitting out seasons-worth of races while the rest of the field is competing and making gains and everybody is talking like he’s still relevant and competitive. Help me understand.

Well, he wasnt sitting out this season because he was busy switching teams. Rather switching teams because he was sitting out the season.

But he’s sitting out because he switched teams and endo’d himself right into the ground on something that was proven to be difficult to handle after he came off something he spent two years progressing on. They say the best way to not slide down an icy mountain is to not be on an icy mountain in the first place

yeah leaving KTM was definitely questionable. But it was at a time when KTM was facing serious financial difficulties, so future was unsure + the shock issues. And probably the Prado - Kawasaki situation wasnt as bad at that point.

Truth! Fully agree. He probably thought he could fix it but he found out

Solid points. I think this was true in 2024/25. The level has been raised since.

Pulling for Chase that he can raise his level & be a front runner again

He was on Honda 250’s for years before moving to Honda 450. Pretty sure he had a good feel for that aluminum frame by then. First year on KTM was a big change and it showed. I agree that he had improved as a rider, but to what extent I can’t say.

From what I read he signed with Kawasaki early in the season. I wonder if he regretted that as the season wore on & they made gains on the issues. His last to first ride was epic & he seemed to have the bike in his comfort window.

Between the shock problems & the financial instability at KTM that was being reported, I'm not surprised he thought it was a good time to move. Either way it's going to be great to see Chase focused and ready to kick ass at A1, whatever color he's on.

So I scraped some data of my own, manually... But what I found really interesting is if you isolate the last 2 years on Honda for Chase 22-23, the statistics are very nearly identical to his time at KTM.

Avg Finish 4.15

Podium % 63.63

Podiums 21

Starts 33

Win % 21.21

Wins 7

I would be very curious of laps led percentage of just those two years because 22 especially he threw away more than a couple of races but I don't want to have to dive that deep.

This might show some credible evidence to the speed factor.

First table is for supercross. Higher fastest lap % on a Honda but better fastest average lap % on KTM when he smoothed out as some would say.

BrandTotalMainsFastest Lap TimeFastest Average Lap TimeFastest Lap %Fastest Average Lap %
HON56191133.9319.64
KTM46121126.0923.91

Always going to be some factors involved that influence these numbers but this is the raw data.

His time on Honda also went up against perfect-season Jett, and a lot of Eli. KTM results might be skewed somewhat by getting an outdoor season where Jett was hurt and a Supercross season where Jett, Eli, and Hunter were all hurt.

Are people who keep bringing up those two SX wins impressed by his Kawasaki stats? just curious

Thanks! Here is first year on KTM vs first year on KAW. Same win total but a lot more podiums on KTM

With the talent pool we have for the 2027 SX season, Sexton isn't really even a podium threat. I know he is a great rider, but...I really don't get the guy. He's blown up more bridges than Hogan's Heros.

He can win races, even on equipment he doesn't like...

I would say it's the same amount of a learning curve going to a steel framed bike after riding aluminum all your life like someone else said.

Well, the other riders seem to love their bikes and win A LOT. Jett, Hunter, Deegs, Roczen. You guys really think Sexton is going to beat these guys with the prima donna bitch and moan attitude he has? Unless he does a complete 180, he ain't going to win sh*t no matter what he's on. And not many teams even want this guy near them. He's poison. He's chasing a friggin aborition at this point in his career. I like the guy, but he is nuttier than squirrel turds.

If you don't like Chase, I get it. But to say he isn't a podium threat is wild.

Was a podium threat. Being a podium threat and actually accomplishing it next year is a big...BIG if. If the top 4 stay healthy...he isn't beating them. No friggin way. He's an Iowa guy like me. So, I want him to win. But dayum...he has a head full of sh*t at this point. He doesn't even have a bike yet. Whos is he riding for? Yamaha...nope. Honda...nope. KTM...nope. Kawi...nope. He has one brand...Suzuki. And of he wads it up or pushes the front and has to kick start his own bike...he'll throw a fkng fit. And, he will. All on national TV for all to watch.
