Being THE guy on a team

I get it, but when I look at Hunter’s progression there is no way he is on this alien level without Jett as a riding partner. At a time when it feels like the field vs the Lawrence’s, is it time to give up that “only I’m the guy on this team” mentality.

I’m thinking about chase right now and how we’re saying he has no place. Roczen, Webb, and Deegan wouldn’t want him because they want to be THE guy on the team. Hunter went from a solid rider with no chance of being Jett level, to literally beating Jett. IMO this comes down to him actually having a daily riding partner that is on that level.

I truly believe we would see a giant improvement in any of those 3 if they had chase on their team. What do they really have to lose? They all already are getting completely smoked by the Lawrence’s (sure they may win here and there, but overall championship talk).

I think of Deegan interviews when he came in so cocky and then after racing a few motos with the boys he talks about their intensity for the entire moto. He’s never ridden with that before, but Hunter and Jett ride with that everyday. They know what level the competition is at. None of the others truly do until season starts.

Maybe I’m just ranting, but what you guys think? I see Chase as a huge asset for a team right now vs a liability.

To be the guy on a factory team is one thing, but only one guy can be The Man.

Internal competition is a good thing! I know some think Deegan and Chase on a team would be a dumpster fire, and maybe it would be. But I do know we’d see two freaking animals on race day. Imagine those two m-F on the practice track together. They’d both do anything to not lose and I think they’d push each other to another level. Manager would need to manage, of course. Bike development would be next level too.

When it’s just one guy with a vast difference to the second guy, you don’t have that riding intensity and ability to work off each other on bike development.

Idk how it would work out, but I was referencing DeCoster as The Man, not just a guy on a factory team.

Ya think Jett was beating hunter when they were on 65's and 85s? I'd say Hunter was the rabbit early on, Jett had to get better to keep up and beat Hunter. One raised the others level and maybe now the shoe is on the other foot. Both are examples how injuries play into who is on top.

I think over the past two years, Chase has been looked at as both an asset AND a liability.

This. Little brother syndrome. The younger guy usually ends up working harder and wanting it more. It often catches the older brother off-guard by the time they are both physically mature.

True lol. I think we’re gonna see a different Chase no matter where he ends up. He hit that rock bottom like Jorge. He has no choice at this point. I’m sure he’s self aware at the situation he’s in and has some regrets.

I hope Chase is able to get it together because he is a beast with the capability to run with and possibly beat the best at their best.

I think, in this case, it had mostly to do with Hunter’s injuries early on.  I think it slowed his momentum while Jett’s momentum seemed to accelerate in his transition to the 450.

Some guys are guys other guys are not guys but sometimes a guy that wasn’t a guy becomes a guy and the guy that was the guy becomes not the guy but that doesn’t mean he’s not a guy, he’s just not the guy because now the other guy is the guy.

IMO the only way that anybody can beat Team Lawrence is to truly work as a team - share everything, managed strictly to maintain the team effort, no sneaky crap.  But this will never happen

The advantage the Lawrences have isn’t that there’s two of them, it’s that they are brothers AND they’ve been brought up with a strong sense of family.  Each is as heavily invested in the other's success as their own.

No individual riders are going to share with and support another elite rider on a team the way the brothers do.  It just can’t be replicated by throwing two guys together.

It could still be advantageous and improve each rider dramatically.  When you’re doing motos during the week and you’re always the fastest guy by a large margin you have no idea how you’re going to compare come race season. Throw in a podium guy and now you at least have an idea where you’re gonna stack up. Now you have that carrot to chase. If other guy is beating you during the week you will do everything to not let that happen. Both riders benefit

The Lawrence’s are brothers and get along better than any two other riders will, but they want to beat each other the same way any riders do.

It also wouldn’t be up to one rider to not share information on a team. The mechanics would know the bike changes being made.

I agree and even more specifically I think they are heavily invested in the success and well-being of their entire family.  Must be an amazing feeling to change the trajectory of their family tree at such a young age.

Sounds like a good theory until you realise Hunter has made his biggest progressions while Jett’s been out injured.

Hunter and Jett both wouldn’t be where they are right now without being able to push each other. You think it’s just a coincidence Hunter made this huge step in his riding?

There’s the saying in literally all sports about if you want to be the best then train/play with the best. What benefit does being the solo big dog on a team with a big jump down in skill from you and #2 aside from an ego bump? And there have been plenty instances of riders blocking other big dogs from being on their team. Maybe in the past this works, but right now the Lawrence’s are completely smoking everybody.

How did you get that from what I said???

Your first sentence was “…when I look at Hunter’s progression there is no way he is on this alien level without Jett as a riding partner.”

I simply said that sounds good except Hunter’s biggest progressions have been while he hasn’t had Jett as a daily riding partner. Which is fact. I didn’t give any opinion.

Coenens are coming, its going to be tough for the rest.

Egos get in the way, did Carmichael, Stewart or Tomac train with other competitors or did they train at their private compounds?

What? You’re acknowledging the idea but denying it by saying Hunter got this good without Jett since he was injured. But Hunter has been riding with Jett a while now on the 450 and his trajectory has dramatically improved. Nobody else on the 450 has improved as much as Hunter IMO. Of course Jett has dealt with injuries, but every off season they are riding together and developing the bike. Yeah I get he can also improve without Jett just how every rider is always improving. I’m just saying he has made huge strides and it’s extremely beneficial to train with the fastest guy in moto.

Name any brothers that were on the same track at the same time that didn't ride better.

Hunter has always been legit it just took him a while longer to progress, his debut 250 MX ride he pushed and almost beat a prime AC92.

To your point yes having Jett as the carrot on the stick helps.

I don't think Hunter has anything for a healthy Jett, just my opinion
