Just read observations on Racer x this week. Laughed out loud a couple of times. Great article, credit where it is due! Nice Matthes!

Here's the opener to the article...and it only gets better...
Round two of the Monster Energy SuperMotocross World Championship took place in California and we can get into the whole SMX series thing again if you guys want. I’ll keep it short…
This was basically the 18TH SX of the season, or maybe the 19th considering last week’s race was also in a stadium. That is not what anyone was told this SMX would be. Now, having said that, at least it didn’t monsoon down this week.
My listeners, people in the industry, people on social media all have “ideas” on how to fix SMX. Maybe the vibe changes a bit this weekend since this is a true hybrid track instead of what feels like a supercross. I do hear some fans saying they like the idea of one big money race (like the old Monster Cup) and then maybe just count one SX and one MX as the rounds that seed the riders into it? I dunno man. I really hope something is done for next year to at least get riders/teams excited for this extra work/extra chance of injury, etc.
Not at all a Matthes fan...but I will say the guy is funny sometimes. The "Weege is having a stroke in the box" line made me snort for real. 😄
It's a decent payout especially for the guys up front but if they really wanted it to be special the tracks or location needed to be totally unique. This last race might be...we'll see. It aint special if it ain't special.
This should just make select rounds throughout the year count towards smx or something and you can have one finale or something.
Do like A1, Daytona, Ironman, Red Bud and then a finale.
Think it accomplishes the same desired goal.
The Shop
Luxon 4-Post Bar Mounts
$189.95 - $239.95
DeCal Works Huge Plastic Inventory of UFO and Polisport kits.
Quali during a couple SX and MX rounds.
One big race at end of year.
Make it unique each year.
Beach race one year would be cool. 😎
DB I believe had an idea before.
Round 1 - standard sx format. Main pays normal 1x points
Round 2 use the current 2x20 min format each main pays points there’s your 2x
Round 3 use triple crown 3x15mim motos each pays points there’s 3x
That accomplishes bringing the hype to the final round without the gimmicky feel of double and triple points.
Make sure the tracks and stadiums live up to the hype, make the tracks right and people won’t bitch like they are.
if the tracks are bad ass like those Atlanta and Chicago and Daytona have been nobody will hate it like they are when it’s a total let down like the designs have been.
Does the SX schedule really need to be 17 rounds? Why don’t they make it 14 rounds and they can keep NBC happy with a 3 round SMX finale. 🤷♂️
I think the dumbest thing Matthes has been saying lately is that they should cut 3 to 4 rounds of motocross if they want to keep the 3 round playoffs! C’mon now…
my idea is simple: just put all 450 and 250 riders in 125cc 2 stroke bikes.
whatever
US Open
Imagine having 1 round where they all have to ride 250 2T (MX/SX 1) and 125 2T (MX/SX 2)…
I think that if Feld cuts three rounds from the SX series, it might make the teams and riders happy, but us fans would pay for it.
Feld isn't going to simply agree to make less money. Ticket prices, food and beer at the races, souvenirs, and NBC Peacock would all go up at least 30% in cost.
I'll stand by my prediction. As soon as WSX goes away, so does SMX, because the threat will have been eliminated.
Honestly I don’t like that so many are wishing it away. It could get worse. I’d rather have it than not personally, just make it less gimmicky.
If they did it like this, make it races on off weekends for MXGPs and see if anyone comes over. …or give SMX points for MXGPs on the same weekends. btw…points only for overall in MX. You are minimizing your premier series the way you do it now. Kenny was behind guys that never won a 450 race and only raced 450 mx, and he was the SX champion with multiple wins. Then make the Finale the week after MXGP ends. MXdN 2 weeks later. If you’re going to call it a World Championship….eventually you should include the World!
I like your thinking.
My thoughts:
Have all the 250 and 450 qualify together for these . Cant tell me people wouldn’t have wanted to see Deegs go against the 450 boys last year on his 250. Also have a way to eliminate the number of racers so the last round only have the top 22 combined riders.
Posted it in a different thread.
They call it the SMX Playoffs but no one gets eliminated as the rounds progress.
Want to make this novelty SMX Playoffs thing more exciting to watch.
Round 1:
20 riders line up in each class.
Eliminate five 450 riders and five 250 riders.
Round 2:
15 riders line up in each class.
Eliminate another five 450 riders and five 250 riders.
Round 3:
20 riders line up on a single gate composed of ten 450 riders and ten 250 riders.
Practice/qualifying split into two groups.
Group A: Top 5 riders from each class.
Group B: Bottom 5 riders from each class.
Super Pole
Since there's now only 1 combined class, have a 3 moto format that pays normal points for all 3 motos.
At the end of the day it's still a novelty, but at least it's something completely different than we're used to watching.
Someone also had the idea on some.pod that I liked:
Round 1:
40 Riders at a hybridified or big air MX track.
Round 2:
20 riders at a more typical SX venue
Round 3:
10 Riders at a very unique venue like City Streets or a beach.
Not sure that 10 Riders would really work. Maybe 15 just for the look of things.
The fact that we are 4 years into this whole thing with only 1 year left in the TV deal and the entire industry is having discussions regarding wild format changes tell you everything. The execution of SMX has been a massive failure, i'm actually surprised that they fucked up this bad.
Pit Row
Instead of trying to fix it, how about just fucking it off altogether!
Go back to standalone SX and MX titles, and all In for MXdN.
Leaving plenty of rest time, or off season money making races for those that want to.
Another idea i heard i kind of preferred
rd 1 is a bigger almost outdoors track 40 riders per class (no mixing). elimnate 10.
rd 2 30 riders hold track on speedway, get daytona 90s/early 00's vibe when they had a gnarly track and 30 riders.
rd3 final 22 on a branford hybrid track.
in either scenario i like the elimination aspect. It means guys have to show up and survive to the 1st & 2nd rounds. Id almost like there to be a complete wash of points coming into the last round so it avoid a scenario where if a guy won the 1st round then barely finishes round 2, he's still a threat provided he shows up for the last day
